BREAKING: REDbird May Be Cash-Only Tomorrow

Dan’sDeals is reporting that REDcard loads will be cash-only starting tomorrow. It will be hard-coded to reject credit card loads. This is based on a memo which others reported and he saw himself.

I’m not surprised if this turns out to be true. I’ll try confirming it at my local Target and I’ll update this post if I see anything. The main reason we’re posting this unconfirmed report is so that all our readers could get in a $2,500 load today. That’s where I’m going now…

One big loss here is that those who had SoftServe won’t be able to go back to it with its higher debit/credit load limits since Softcard shut it doors recently. Most who got in on REDbird from the beginning will be happy they did so despite losing a little on the Serve end, but those who changed recently may end up losing in the long run.

Two big questions remain:

  • Will debit cards and PIN-enabled gift cards still work?
  • Will Amex For Target die along with REDbird. (This is a very important question in my opinion.) It technically shouldn’t, but it may get coded along with REDbird not to allow credit card loads.

UPDATE: See FrequentMiler’s post Confirmed: REDbird credit card loads will not be allowed as of May 6, 2015

Regretting swiching out my softserve last month.

Regret not switching sooner. Once you realize how easy it is to MS compared to Serve… (sigh) Sad sad day. Almost wonder if SoftServe’s demise caused a surge in RedBird’s which triggered this. Timing is uncanny.

Softserve’s demise? Please explain. Those of us with Softserve are doing quite well despite what Amex said would happen 🙂

I can’t wait to read all about this five days from now on MMS!

Now I really regret not going yesterday to do a load…

Oh well, thanks for the heads up. Will head to Target after work to try and load in case it is that last day.

Ouch, just when I finally picked up a second one. Oh well. At least I can load up one last time today.

What are the rules for loading? When you say load $2500 today, is that in one swipe?

Alonso

You can only do $1,000 per swipe. Total you can load in a day (per REDbird) is $2,500.

I am on the west coast and was tempted to make the switch. I found a seller wanting almost $25 per card to get me one. I started to wonder how much longer it would last and if it would work, as I would need to shut down my Serve account to get started. Good thing I decided to wait a bit longer. Good things die young within this hobby. Hopefully any feature test markets will include CA.

Just tried and the register refused it.

But vgc with pin worked

Hi AB, how much can you load via debit per day?

AB

I just did $1200 across 6 transactions (go figure). I assume it’s the same $2500/day; $1000/transaction as before.

Okay thanks for the info!

Anything in store counts as “Cash.” 1000 per transaction, 2500 per day.

Aw man I just got my card in the mail. Would you happen to know if it will take effect in EST? I’m in west coast and getting off work a little later tonight…

NoonRadar

Ken, try to load by 12 EST just to be sure; no one will know with 100% certainty until it happens.

Thanks NoonRadar. Wish I could but I finish work at 12 EST and I only just found out about this on my way to work! I’m kicking myself for not loading my card yesterday!

that’s a roller coaster surprise from amex during the last few days. first, it was a pleasant surprise to be able to load with our non amex CCs up to $1500/month to SoftServe accounts, a big thank you for that. and today, this news about a memo ending CC loads to Redbird is truly sad, but not unexpected. I have both cards although have more of the former. I had maxed out load for this month so that gave me 8 full months of fee free loads to meet a lot of min spend requirements. I knew it wouldn’t last but I was hoping it would be powered by Energizer bunny…Anyway, thank you Target, this won’t keep me from shopping there if I’m not at WM ; )

I just now 5/5/2015 5:30pm CST in Houston, TX did 3 loads of .. $1000, $1000 and $500 with no problem at all.

Just reloaded at target in NYC, talked to store manager. Yup, that’s right, today is the last day you can load with CC, enjoy.

Got my full loads in on two cards today in a non-redbird city and the cashiers knew what was up. They’ve been seeing a surge all day. Bigger question is whether we can still load with debit cards. Would much rather prefer to drain debit enabled VGC/MGC’s at Target than Walmart.

T

Do you believe there is any urge to unload today also?

Parkerthon
Parkerthon

Nah. That’s a different function entirely facilitated by amex and wouldn’t be changed as lightly as this.

Data point: whereas at lunch time the Target near work would only let me load vgc’s using PIN, I just went to another Target on the way home and cc’s still worked there.

So… the rumors that this may be branch by branch could be true. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
