[Expired] Chase IHG Traveler Card (No AF): 100,000 Point Bonus

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Chase IHG Traveler is offering a sign up bonus of 100,000 points after $2,000 in spend within the first three months

Card Details

  • No annual fee
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 5x points per $1 spent on IHG properties
    • 2x points per $1 spent on gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants
    • 1x points per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Gold elite status when you spend $10,000 on your card each calendar year
  • Fourth Reward Night Free on any stay of 4 or more nights
  • 20% discount when purchasing points

Our Verdict

The Premier card currently has an offer of 140,000 points with the annual fee waived first year, spend requirement is an extra $1,000 but that is a significantly better offer than this. This is the best offer we’ve seen on this card before, previous best was 75,000 points. Because the annual fee is waived first year on the Premier card and it’s offering an extra 40,000 points we won’t be adding this to the best credit card bonuses (you can always downgrade to this card after a year of holding the other card).

Second that. Additionally what happens if you apply for both the Premier and Traveler card at once while having the select card but currently at 4/24?

Terms say: “If you currently have an IHG Rewards Club Credit Card from Chase, or you earned a new cardmember bonus on that credit card within the last 24 months, you are not eligible to receive another of the same credit card.”

Key word here is “same”. If interpreted literally, it would mean you can get multiple IHG card bonuses within 24 months, as long as they are for *different* cards. So, no “one per family” rule like the Southwest cards. The question is whether this has been tested – any data points?

Thanks. That’s the way I interpreted “the same card” hence my question. Does anyone have evidence of this situation (different card products).

Smart verdict. The way subs are getting better, looks like chase may remove hotel and airline cards from the 5/24 restrictions in future.

When I tried to downgrade my Premier to a (2nd) Traveler, they told me the downgrade “version” of the Traveler would have a $39 annual fee.

@Mickey  William Charles

I was told the same thing back in the spring about the IHG Traveler Card. It was explained to me by a chase representative that when the card initially launched it had a $29 annual fee and that sales of the card were not as expected so as a promotion, they have offered the IHG Traveler Card with no annual fee to new customers but anyone wishing to product trade will only be eligible for the same card with a $29 annual fee. The phone rep I talked to understood my frustration but said he had heard of no plans to offer the IHG Traveler card with no annual fee to those who product trade.

Thus I think the for those who do not want a free night up to 40,000 points per night the Traveler card is the better deal.

As a datapoint, I signed up for this card on September 1, which was having a signup bonus of 75,000 points after a $2000 spend. After seeing the new offer, I secure messaged Chase requesting a signup bonus match to the current 100,000 point offer. They responded that I need to be directly targeted for the 100,000 point deal. I told them that the 100,000 point offer is a public offer. They declined my request.

Any other suggestions, or is Chase getting stricter on signup bonus matches?

I recently did a product change down from the Premier to the Traveler. The representative told me that I would see a charge for an annual fee, but then I would see that fee dropped in a month or two. This rep said it was a recent promotion, and I am not sure how accurate this response was. I made the switch since I was told this specifically, Chase is typically better about this sort of thing than Citi.

Austin D ,
Do you get your fee dropped?
