Chase Partners with Shell to Offer 5¢ off per Gallon through 2019 [Fuel Rewards Gold Status]

Update 2/6/19: Chase has sent this offer out to Southwest & Hyatt cardholders. Hat tip to reader
Samagra R & Matt M. Don’t think you actually even need a card to use this offer though.

Update 1/21/19: Deal is valid through 2019. Another e-mail was sent out last week reminding people about this offer. A lot of readers requested more information/our thoughts so here is a delayed updated post.

Chase sent out another email today to those who have not already taken advantage of this offer. (thanks to readers Luke and Noah)

The Offer

Chase and Shell partnered to offer all Chase Freedom cardholders Fuel Rewards Gold status which gets you 5¢ off per gallon at Shell. Typically, Gold status requires doing 6 fill-ups per 3-month period; with this offer, you’ll have automatic Gold status for the year.

Promotion Page link | New Link

Both Freedom & Freedom unlimited are eligible. The weird thing is that they don’t ask for your Freedom card information, and from what I can tell, there’s no requirement to pay for the gas with your Freedom card. Seems like anyone might be able to signup on the dedicated Freedom page and get a year of Gold status with 5¢ off; it’s just a Freedom deal in the sense that it’s marketed toward those customers, as I see it.

The Fine Print

  • This offer is only available to Chase customers who did not participate in a similar Fuel Rewards® offer in 2018.
  • Gold status is valid through December 31, 2019
  • Valid for both existing Fuel Rewards members and new members
  • To qualify for the extended Gold Status offer for Chase customers, you must be a Chase customer, a Fuel Rewards member and swipe your Fuel Rewards card or enter your Alt ID when you fuel at a participating Shell station
  • To continue your Gold status after 2019, you’ll have do 6 Shell fill-ups of 5 gallons+ during 2019
  • Fuel Rewards savings are limited to twenty (20) gallons of fuel per purchase

Our Verdict

Deal is a bit ‘meh,’ to be honest. I’m even somewhat surprised it was worth it for Chase to enter into the partnership. I doubt they paid anything to Shell, but they loaned their name to it. Keep in mind IHG loyalty customers can get:

  • 6¢ if you have Platinum status (available through the IHG credit card)
  • 7¢ if you have Spire Elite status

IHG program no longer available.

For those who regularly fill up at Shell, this is a nice way of saving up to $1 on each fill-up. It’s especially useful for those who take advantage of other Fuel Rewards deals and already get discounted gas from Shell – this deal will add another 5¢/gallon to the discount. Two recurring examples are getting 15¢ perdollar spent at select grocery stores with Mastercard and various Stop&Shop/Giant/Martin’s grocery promos to earn Fuel Rewards, even on gift cards occasionally. This Freedom deal sweetens the pot with an additional 5¢ off.

Chase also notes in a memo to their bankers that this promo will stack well with the Q1 2018 5% category which includes gas stations. As noted in our previous post, a lot of people might want to max that out with the mobile payments option instead.

Chase concludes to “look for similar promotions for other Chase products in 2018.” There’s no question that Chase’s promotion department is in overdrive.

Hate pop anyone’s bubble, but this is kinda like getting free air. Everyone that signs up for the Fuel Rewards program gets instant gold status (no purchase required). You can get another 1c though IHG brining it to 6c

carlos
carlos

how do you get the extra 1c through IHG?

Zoomzoomzoomie
Zoomzoomzoomie

Through the platinum elite tier, which you may have if you have the IHG card.

You can get an extra 2¢ (7¢ total) if you have spire elite.

How to link ihg program to fuel reward. Can you suggest ?

Yup, Gold status is worthless to anyone with a Chase IHG card, or who otherwise has IHG Platinum status. You get 6c for your IHG status, but it is instead of the basic gold status, they do not stack.

Nick

They discontinued that as of January 1 – my normal reward went back from 6 cents to 5 cents

But I already get this. Why not a bonus $0.05 off?

Currently you can get an added 5 cents IF you fill up on TUESDAYS.

I am pleasantly surprised by this offer as I was about to lose my Gold status for not using the program. I also surprised that they did this with a Visa given their partnership with MasterCard. This deal also means you to not have to use it every three months which is the standard condition to keep
Gold status.
The gotcha is going to be a choice of Freedom for the next three months OR each $100.00 of grocery spend at many groceries gets 15 cents off per gallon (max 20 gallons per fill) when you use a linked MasterCard.
My read is this is an either/or It stacks at the pump, but not in the grocery store. IE Chase Pay choice 5% OR 15 cents off per Gallon at the pump.

Due to combining Mastercard paid vGC purchases at the Grocery recently, I am getting my next fill (one time only) for $1.55 off like a coupon which expires the end of February.

If you lose gold status, just sign up again.

Normally, yes. DoC’s link cures that from now thru all of 2018.

>when you fuel at select participating Shell stations in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin on Tuesdays during the Offer Period

Nope.

Good deal for me since i have so many Shell gas gift cards (17) from the Shop rite gift card promotion.
Also with a Shell gift card you pay the cash price and not the CC price.

Also will stack with the ~monthly T-Mobile Tuesday 25¢ a gallon offer for 30¢ total.

M

Also, the 5¢ off /gal for Gold claim is misleading. Regular membership comes with 3¢ off /gal, in addition to other existing discounts. No one should really go out of their way to maintain gold for the 2¢ extra.

Don from Comment one is right.

You get Gold status just by signing up for Shell rewards.
I signed up my Spouse that doesnt have a Freedom card and got this email:

Thank you for joining the Fuel Rewards® program! You now have Gold Status and will save at least 5¢/gal on every fill-up with any fuel type, including Shell V-Power® NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline. Plus, you’ll enjoy additional benefits that come with instant Gold Status.

Mike

Any chance they would partner with groceries for fuel rewards with Chase Visa cards? That would be a bonus. Right now everything is tied to mastercard of which I use none for rewards.

I always roll my eyes when people go out of their way to save 2-5 cents per mile on gas. If you buy 100 gallons of gas a month, that’s a $5 difference. I realize this is nice, and maybe it adds up over years (not months), but until it’s 25-50 cents a gallon, I don’t think many people will see a noticeable change in money. Just my thoughts though.

joe
joe

Not to mention that Shell is considerably more expensive than other gas stations. At least within the areas that i travel through

Gerald
Gerald

In my area, they’re the cheapest (and the most expensive depending on which station). When combined with Stop and Shop gas points and a Pennzoil offer for $1 off per gallon when you buy a 5 quart jug of synthetic oil, you can do quite well. I got 20 gallons last week for a total of 38 cents. It should have been free, but the lowest they can go is apparently 1.9 cents per gallon.

Frank Rizzo
Frank Rizzo

Not only that but it cost more to get there.

Electroman
Electroman

That’s 15c per *hundred* dollar spent on groceries with your Mastercard. Currently it says ” getting 15¢ perdollar spent at select grocery stores”, which would indeed be awesome!

Jeff H
Jeff H

When I dig into it, just about any chain of groceries in my area are impacted when I use a registered MasterCard. See your Fuel Rewards account for more details.

Ender
Ender

Can this stack with Kroger fuel points? I guess no because you have to input your kroger # instead of shell #?

Francesco
Francesco

Correct, it doesn’t stack.

Jeff H
Jeff H

In my area Kroger gas is NOT Shell gas. I have to choose to do business at one or the other. Right now, I have 40 cents in fuel points to use or lose by the end of December at Kroger gas/KwikShop. I have $1.55 to use at Shell, but that does not expire until the end of February. Looks like I will have to pay better attention to my Shell Fuel Rewards card for offer expiration dates.

Francesco
Francesco

In my area the best Shell price is still 15 cents over the best overall gas price. I assume this would be the case elsewhere too. A discount of 5 cents at Shell does not seem valuable given that I can get gas 10 cents cheaper elsewhere.

Electroman
Electroman

It’s definitely not the case for the Shell nearest me – they are usually a cent or two per gallon over the BP nearest me, but only that.

Jeff H
Jeff H

That has been my thinking until recently, Last week I revisited the issue because of an email. Turns out Shell here has gotten more competitive to their competition.

Francesco
Francesco

I just checked the numbers above today in my area. But yeah, I’ve noticed that too… the gap between Shell and other competitors was even larger weeks/months ago.

86

Some Valero stations in my area became Shell. They’re now roughly the same price as Arco. The other Shell stations are still at least $.20/gal. more.

Joe
Joe

The problem I have with Shell Gold or this promotion, is the limitation on 20 gallons. If you drive a large SUV, or truck as in my case – I can never truly fill my tank from empty.

It requires me hanging up the pump, putting my credit card in a second time to finish pumping. It’s just an annoying process to save $1.00. Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don’t.

Electroman
Electroman

The fillups with discounts from my grocery store and my MasterCard linked to my Fuel Rewards account is 45 gallons. It’s 20 gallons for the regular discount, though.

Harry Nguyen
Harry Nguyen

Dang, I don’t really use Shell like that. I use Chevron and Exxon/Mobil, but my last resort would be Shell. It’s good that they’re doing a promotion and at least one doesn’t have to apply for a Shell credit card, I could never know how to use a safeway card/points or fuel rewards lol.

Jeff H
Jeff H

CAN BE IMPORTANT

Set up an alternate ID in your Fuel Rewards profile for when you buy Shell gas. That way all you and your family can take advantage of the offer without the Fuel Rewards card with you when getting gas.

Audrey
Audrey

If you have a Stop and Shop account you can link it to your Fuel Rewards account and access the combined discount that way also.

Darvin Ray
Darvin Ray

meh. the shell in my area ia 30 to 100 cents more expensive that the other gas stations. 5 cents off per gallon still wont make it a deal.for me.

Michael
Michael

I love when we talk Shell, all the haters complain about Shell not being price competitive or filling up at Costco. Yeah we get it. Be constructive and don’t leave those comments, make the world a better place with all your new found time!

Darvin Ray
Darvin Ray

Calm down, dude. It’s just a comment. Not every opinion that’s different to yours is a hate speech. You’ll give yourself a heart attack if you take everything in the internet so seriously. There’s not much to write about because it’s all basic grades school math.

Example of prices at the current gas stations in my area:
Shell (Normal Price): $2.89 per gallon.
Shell (Gold discount): $2.84 per gallon.
Speedway $2.64 per gallon
Sam’s Club: $2.41 per gallon

Now, i do not drive much so I only fill up about 10 gallon a week. So, that’s:
Shell (Normal Price): $28.90
Shell (Gold Discount): $28.40
Speedway: $26.40
Sam’s Club: $24.10

So,compared to Shell’s normal price, the saving for every fill up are:
Shell (Normal Price): $0.00
Shell (Gold Discount): $0.50
Speedway: $2.00
Sam’s Club: $4.80

That’s why you will always be better off having a gas card that gives you 5% cashback per dollar spent on gas, than getting 5 cents off per gallon.

Mike
Mike

It’s weird how different the Midwest is on gas. I always hear people complaining about Amex/Plenti Exxon deals and Shell deals because of how expensive their gas is. Our gas has a difference about about 2 cents between all the different companies (including Costco most of the time) in St Louis.

Michael
Michael

I live in the Midwest. Gas pricing is a capitalist practice here and everyone is largely within a few cents of each other. Prices vary somewhat by town, but not enough unless you’re already going there and know the prices when needing to fill up.

I still don’t see how any comments that claim Shell gas is overpriced have anything to do with this post. It’s a discount for those that would already choose Shell if prices are equal to all the other gas stations in town. Not all of America lives in a town with a Warehouse Club or even stop lights for that matter.

Your comments come off as tone deaf and contradictory to the those that would find value in this information. If it doesn’t pertain to you, move along. Your comment(s) provides no value to anyone. Stop wasting other’s time.

JASON
JASON

Read Darvin Ray’s first comment again, he said “in my area”,… “wont make it a deal.for me”. This is what we call a DP. This is only for him and he only describes a fact he knows about. He doesn’t say anything like all Shell gas station price is always higher than other gas station in the same local area. Darvin’s comment is similar like those “The Wells Fargo branch near my home requires business title document in order to open up a business checking account for the bonus” On the other hand, you would see comment from others like” The Wells Fargo branch near my home doesn’t need any business document from me and I can open up the business checking account with my SSN.”

What do we call this? YMMV. That means, whatever works for you may not work for others. Whatever works for others may not work for you. Your first reply to Darvin gone too far and when I read your reply I just don’t get it I mean, what is the big deal here even though anyone say that Shell is expensive? Seriously like I don’t get the point how the argument starts and expands. That’s just $1 max saved OK?. You label other people hater and I agree with Darvin that”Not every opinion that’s different to yours is a hate speech.”

“I still don’t see how any comments that claim Shell gas is overpriced have anything to do with this post”

The point is so obvious, man. If Shell’s price is higher than other gas station then this deal may seem to be some joke for some ppl. And last, whether a post provides a certain value or not is not to be determined by you solely. It’s also YMMV. Your stop wasting other’s time already wasted your time because you gone too far on a simply comment here on DOC.

PS: this is just a max of $1 saved and we all know that. I mean, come on~~~

JASON
JASON

The only good part of Shell is that they have partnership with S&S and when promo on giftcard runs in a certain period, S&S would give from 2x to 5x points for purchasing MCGC/VGC and maybe other GC as well. 1 MCGC cost $5.95 with max fund $500, 2% CC reward would compensate the fees and end up with $4.17 gain. Last week we had 2X points promo running meaning that’s already 1011 points = $0.10/gallon X (1011/100)=$1.01/gallon off any price, for purchasing one card.

Above math is true as I’ve used the points (7000 initially, now still 5000 points) and save more than $40. This is much much better than BP. But such deal only runs on a short period and points would expire in 30 days after purchasing the GC @ S&S.

That being said, even though regularly Shell’s price higher than other gas station, but paired with S&S GC promo you would save even more than from other gas station!
