[Expired] [Branch Offer?] Chase Sapphire Preferred 80,000 Points Signup Bonus with $4,000 Spend

Update 11/14/22: Offer now 70k points without the annual fee waived.

Update 6/10/22: One report indicates this offer will still be available in Chase branches through 6/11/22. Note: most branches will be closed on Saturday so that leaves just today, 6/10. The annual fee might be waived in-branch.

Update 6/9/22: Referral links are down to 60,000 as well now.

Update 6/2/22: The public offer is down to 60,000. Referral links are still showing 80,000.

Update 5/27/22: Offer is actually ending on 6/1 1800 EDT now.

Update 5/19/22: Offer is ending at 6pm ET on May 31, according to OMAAT and VFTW. I wouldn’t be surprised if referral links continue to work beyond that, but worth doing soon if you’re interested.

Update 4/14/22: This offer is now publicly available, a day after it came to referral links. Again, if you can use a reader’s referral instead of the public link you’ll make someone happy!

  • Chase 5/24 rule applies to this card

Our Verdict

The 100,000 points offer from last year is long gone and it’s probably not worth waiting for it to reappear. This 80,000 points offer is quite nice, with the added bonus that the referrer will get a sweet 15,000 points bonus as well.

Be sure to generate a new referral link which shows the 80,000 offer as the older links still show 60,000.

Keep in mind you can sign up in a Chase branch and probably get the 80,000 points offer + waived $95 annual fee. If you are in 2-player mode, the referral offer is better since you’ll get the 15k referrer bonus + 80k new member bonus. (It might be possible to apply in branch and get the referrer bonus applied manually, but I’m not certain that’s true; it might depend on the banker’s knowledge, in any case.)

I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes the public offer, in any case, it only helps someone else to use a referral link. We’ll add this to our List of Best Credit Card Signup Bonus Offers.

If your friend does not have a referral link, please use a reader’s referral link on this page to help out a fellow reader, you’ll make someone very happy. 🙂 Feel free to share your links there as well, though we’ll be closing the comments section there after a short time to keep it manageable.

To flag it – I’ve been getting a “Pre-approved” message for the 80K bonus, $4K spend in 3 months, on the CSP for about a month now. Finally got it yesterday. Others might have something similar in their Chase app/portal.

Can I downgrade from CSP to old freedom card (not freedom flex)? I already have an old freedom card and do not want to waste an sign-up bonus of the freedom flex card.

Can we downgrade CSP card before the annual $95 fee shows up in the statement? Any bad consequence for doing so?

P2 opened Chase Sapphire Preferred (CSP) card for 100k bonus point on 8/16/2021. The next statement is 9/14/2022, which I expect the $95 fee will be billed with transaction dated 9/1/2022. Can P2 downgrade CSP to her existing Freedom card now? In two days, P2 will be away from home for a few months and I want to make sure this is taken care of as soon as possible.

Instead of downgrade to a new Freedom Flexible card, can P2 just transfer credit limit and points to existing Freedom Unlimited card (her current credit limit in Freedom Unlimited is very low) and then simply close CSP?

Not looking for a hotel stay anytime soon with CSP annual fee coming up. Anyway for me to take advantage of the $50 hotel credit without an actual stay?

I signed up for CSP for the bonus point in 2021 with the first year annual fee waived. That was my first time in the game of earning credit card bonus points. According to my recent statement, the $95 annual fee will be billed on 8/1/2022. I have not used any of my points earned so far. What are my options now?

After I receive my statement showing the annual fee, is it better to cancel or downgrade to another Chase card? This CSP card is the only new credit card I applied within the last 2 years (across all banks). I also do not carry over credit card monthly balances since I pay all my credit card bills in full each month.

In addition to CSP with Chase, I also have their old Chase Freedom card and their no annual fee Chase Sapphire card (as an authorized user). I don’t dine or travel that much, and I don’t spend money under categories in “Pay Yourself Back”.

If I downgrade my CSP to Chase Freedom Unlimited (CFU), can the credit lines and earned points from CSP be transferred to CFU card? Let’s say a year or two from now, before I book airline tickets, is it possible to apply for a new CSP first and then transfer points (and credit lines) from CFU card back to CSP card in order to utilize CSP higher 1.25% travel redemption from points?

Thanks for any suggestion.

ccBonusNewbie You have 30 days to use or transfer the UR points to one of your other Chase cards or keep in the account if you downgrade. I can’t say for sure whether they’ll keep the same CL if you product change.

As far as getting CSP again at a later date, you can work with Chase to transfer CL and any points can be transferred. Keep in mind that if you wait 48 months from the date you received this most recent Sapphire bonus, you can get it again.

ccBonusNewbie I did a product change of CSP to CFU two days ago. Both points and CL from CSP transferred to CFU.

Are there still active referral codes for the CSP card with the 80K offer out there that I should be trying to get?

I have limited to zero credit history. Moved to the US 4 months back and have a secured card right now. Will I likely get this Preferred card if I apply? Any harm in trying?

Highly unlikely you will get approved. And the rejection will cost you your credit scores and credit history.

Try to avoid this game for the first one year. Build your credit first. After a year, the second card I’d recommend is the Discover Cash back which should get you a decent 5+5=10% on select categories in the first year. Discover is fairly lenient for first timers. At the end of the second year, you should have built enough credit to start playing.

If you are desperate, and have a Citi or Amex back home, you could use the same email address. No guarantee but it may improve chances to get approved for their cards. It will also eat up your 5/24 slots. A better approach would be to use a sign-up bonus to open an checking account with Chase. Then bank with them. They might just offer you the Preferred after 6-12 months. Be very wary of fees though

Anirud A few years ago Bank of America approved me for a regular credit card (not secured) after one month in the US with significant funds in my checking / savings accounts. I didn’t even have a social security number yet, just a passport and a US address (later it got added to my credit history after I got the SSN). I’ve read about similar stories and it’s worth looking into whether they still do this.
