Update 11/16/18: Statement credit increased from $200 to $250. It’s still not immediately clear how easy matching will be with the removal of secured messaging with Citi. Hat tip to reader Tony
The Offer
- Citi American Airlines Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is offering 40,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,000 within the first three months. Plus new card members also receive up to a $250 statement credit on eligible American Airlines purchases within the first 12 months of account opening.

- Annual fee of $99 is waived the first year
- Contains one American Airlines bonus per 24 month language
Our Verdict
Citi allows you to match to higher sign up bonuses even if your current offer contains a statement credit and you get to keep the statement credit. The downside is that the maximum miles match they offer is 20,000 points. So you should be able to match this up to 60,000 miles and still get the $250 statement credit. Not as good as the 50,000 miles + $200 bonus we’ve previously seen as that matched up to 70,000 miles and $200. Same offer is also available on the business card.
Before applying or asking basic questions in the comments make sure you read these things everybody should know about Citi cards here. Also keep in mind this offer contains the following language:
- American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.
We discuss this in more detail here. This is a good offer, but it might be worth waiting for another 50,000 miles + $200 offer to come along. As always there is also no guarantee they will match, so keep in mind that risk factor. If anybody goes for the match then share your experiences in the comments below. I won’t be adding this to our best credit card bonus page due to the fact we’ve seen bigger bonuses semi recently.
