Citi American Airlines 40,000 Miles Personal Offer + $250 Statement Credit (Match To 60k + $250)

Update 11/16/18: Statement credit increased from $200 to $250. It’s still not immediately clear how easy matching will be with the removal of secured messaging with Citi. Hat tip to reader Tony

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Citi American Airlines Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is offering 40,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,000 within the first three months. Plus new card members also receive up to a $250 statement credit on eligible American Airlines purchases within the first 12 months of account opening.

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $99 is waived the first year
  • Contains one American Airlines bonus per 24 month language

Our Verdict

Citi allows you to match to higher sign up bonuses even if your current offer contains a statement credit and you get to keep the statement credit. The downside is that the maximum miles match they offer is 20,000 points. So you should be able to match this up to 60,000 miles and still get the $250 statement credit. Not as good as the 50,000 miles + $200 bonus we’ve previously seen as that matched up to 70,000 miles and $200. Same offer is also available on the business card.
Before applying or asking basic questions in the comments make sure you read these things everybody should know about Citi cards here. Also keep in mind this offer contains the following language:
  • American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.

We discuss this in more detail here. This is a good offer, but it might be worth waiting for another 50,000 miles + $200 offer to come along. As always there is also no guarantee they will match, so keep in mind that risk factor. If anybody goes for the match then share your experiences in the comments below. I won’t be adding this to our best credit card bonus page due to the fact we’ve seen bigger bonuses semi recently.

Does anyone know what triggers the $200 sc?

eligible aa purchases, like ticket, gift card, etc.

Would Buying Gift Cards Count for the $200 Credit?

It’s unclear to me – how do you increase this from a 40k offer to a 60k offer?

I’m working on a targeted 60k offer right now without the 24 month language. Would they match to give me 60k and statement credit even though this one has the 24 month language?

I’m afraid of them matching and then denying when it comes time for the bonus if customer service switches me to this one.

I’m confused on which offer you ask to be matched on? The 70k one with no statement credit?

has anyone bought the egift card for the $200 sc recently

Offer just changed. Now says $250 statement credit (with 40k bonus miles). If only I hadn’t just applied a few days ago.
Same direct link in post, if you’re wondering.

any similar offer for business

Yep. Same link, switch to business.

I would rather have the 70k offer for business.

Do you have link

got a target offer in the email of 75000 miles for $5k spend

Just applied and was approved for their previous offer:

Earn up to 50,000
American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles: 40,000 AAdvantage® miles after making $2,000 in purchases in first 3 months.
Plus, 10,000 after making a total of $6,000 in purchases in first 12 months of account opening.

What are my choices here? Can’t ask for statement credit to be matched right? Could I still ask for match to 60k offer? Such a bummer just shy a few days I’m missing out on the statement credit.

I guess I care about AA miles more than statement credits so hoping matching to 60k is still an option for me. If so, what would the min spend be? Thanks a lot! We need 65k for a booking soon so match would help a ton.

You can match to 70,000 miles

The business card link doesn’t work. I just applied for the business offer and I am hoping to match to the 60k. $250 statement credit was very tempting. I will update if my match is successful.

So I applied a week ago for 40k miles + $200 statement credit and was matched to 60k miles + $200 statement credit. Does anyone know if I can match again to $250 statement credit (+$50)?

how did u get matched?

I sent a secure message – this was before they removed that system. You can still ask for match through chat – they will escalate to the proper department.
