Citi American Airlines 40,000 Miles Personal Offer + $250 Statement Credit (Match To 60k + $250)

Update 11/16/18: Statement credit increased from $200 to $250. It’s still not immediately clear how easy matching will be with the removal of secured messaging with Citi. Hat tip to reader Tony

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Citi American Airlines Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is offering 40,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,000 within the first three months. Plus new card members also receive up to a $250 statement credit on eligible American Airlines purchases within the first 12 months of account opening.

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $99 is waived the first year
  • Contains one American Airlines bonus per 24 month language

Our Verdict

Citi allows you to match to higher sign up bonuses even if your current offer contains a statement credit and you get to keep the statement credit. The downside is that the maximum miles match they offer is 20,000 points. So you should be able to match this up to 60,000 miles and still get the $250 statement credit. Not as good as the 50,000 miles + $200 bonus we’ve previously seen as that matched up to 70,000 miles and $200. Same offer is also available on the business card.
Before applying or asking basic questions in the comments make sure you read these things everybody should know about Citi cards here. Also keep in mind this offer contains the following language:
  • American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.

We discuss this in more detail here. This is a good offer, but it might be worth waiting for another 50,000 miles + $200 offer to come along. As always there is also no guarantee they will match, so keep in mind that risk factor. If anybody goes for the match then share your experiences in the comments below. I won’t be adding this to our best credit card bonus page due to the fact we’ve seen bigger bonuses semi recently.

What are eligible American Airlines purchases? Are AA gift cards purchases qualified for the $250 statement credit?

If I pay for an American Airlines flight on Expedia with this credit card, will it be billed as an American Airlines charge and trigger the credit? I got this card with the $250 statement credit in June 2019. Last time I paid for a United flight on an Expedia with my United card, it was billed as United. Credit card statement said:
Description: UNITED
Also known as: United Airlines
So I’m wondering if the same would happen with AA.

DP I had 2 mail offers for 65,000 miles after 3k in spending but signed up for the 40,000 + $250 statement credit offer and was able to be “matched” to 60,000 miles with the statement credit offer. I called in to be matched and made me email them the mail in offer and received a letter today that they couldn’t change the terms to my account but added 20k miles to my account. So it seems to be they are only able to add up to 20k miles depending on what offer you signed up for.

So I signed up for the 40,000 plus $250 statement credit after $2000 initial spend. Currently there’s a public offer of 60,000 after $3000 initial spend. If I ask Citi to match to the 60,000 offer, does my initial spend also go up to $3000?

Hi team – I just applied for 40K points + $250 statement credit for the individual card yesterday and got approved. I tried sending a message today to ask for a match to 60K bonus points offer, through chat but it looks like the chat functionality no longer exists? So I called Citi’s aadvantage credit card line to ask for a match and got routed to the Applications department. The lady at the applications department said they can’t change my application… did I do this wrong? How do I get them to match? Is there a better number to call? Can I call in again and try for a different result? 🙂

Did this bonus, chatted with citi and mentioned I’d got an email for 60k offer. About a week later I got a letter saying they’d give me 20k.

Looking for any recent DPs (last week or so) for AA gift card reimbursement for statement credit. I’ve got $250 to use and last DP I see is from mid-February!
