Citigold Checking: Problems with the AA 30k Offer

We’ve written about the two Citigold checking offers which have a bonus of 40,000 Thank You points or 30,000 AAdvantage miles. We wrote a step-by-step guide to signing up for these as  well.

Just now, two separate reports (1, 2) came in that there appears to be a problem with the AA offer and it’s apparently not available. This is despite the fact that the offer details are still showing clearly in the promotional terms and indicating that the offer is valid until 9/30/15.

Both reports come with the same conclusion that Citi agreed to instead add the Thank You promo to the account, after the fact, as that promo is still valid and current.

It’s odd that they’re pulling a promo in middle of its time and that they haven’t updated the terms of the offer to indicate that it’s expired. In any case, for now it would make sense to avoid the AA offer, until we hear from Citi that it’s valid again.

Those who recently applied for the AAdvantage offer would be wise to verify that the offer is added correctly to their account. You can do this over the phone or via chat. If the AA offer was not added correctly (more likely if you applied within the past couple days), you should be able to get it swapped over to the Thank You offer instead.

I verified my AAdvantage bonus last week and was actually told by the CSR that I had completed my steps for a 50,000 point bonus. I asked her to verify the numbers on that and she repeated the 50k, so I’ve screen shotted to save and see what happens. But when checking my wife’s account yesterday I was similarly told that the offer was expired even though she had signed up by the previous 6/30 deadline.

Chatted and confirmed the promo was attached to my account. Applied 7/26. One interesting point is the chat agent suggested that I SM Citi with my AAdvantage account number to avoid delay in processing the promo bonus. Everything else I have read suggested they look this up through your SSN, so this was new to me.

My wife signed for AA offer but when called to verify few weeks ago, citi said that she had thank you points attached to account. Closed the account and will rethink keeping their cards as well.

I just called and was told the promotion was tied to my application, however that I was ineligible for it because it was not targeted to me and because I did not apply by phone (I applied online).

I applied on 6/29 for the 30K AAdvantage promotion (code 4Y6KEW8XL3), so within the time frame for the last promotion period. Upon activation, I confirmed through SM that my account was tied to the promotion. This past week I completed the bill pay and spend requirements.

I just confirmed through chat with an agent that I had completed the requirements and that I’ll receive the AA miles w/in 90 days of statement closing.

Applied 8/5, called this morning to verify. 1st agent said that the TYP promotion was applied. Called back to verify and 2nd agent said that there was no promotion applied and that the AA promotion code I gave doesn’t match any promotion they’ve ever had. I asked to have the TYP promotion applied and they said that there were no monthly fee waivers. After an hour on hold, this deal failed my “headache” test and I asked for the account to be closed. I’m not dieing for TYP and I don’t have the energy. I’ll open a credit card instead.

Secure messaged them after being told I was enrolled in Thank You even though I applied for AA – Was just told that because I did not open the account in branch or with a Personal Banker on the phone that the code defaulted to Thank You points and that there is no way to change the promotion.

Thank you points are kind of confusing – These Thank you can not be transffered to an Airline partner but ones acquired as part of the Credit Card sign up bonus can??

William Charles

That’s correct.

Wait! What? CTY points are not all created equal? What are these CTY points good for then?

You can book flights directly with them at, I believe, 1:1.

If you have a Prestige card, you can book flights at 1.6:1 on AA and ~1.3:1 on other airlines.

Just called to try to fund my account with a credit card for the thank you point offer and the guy said if you were not targeted they are not paying out the bonus. And if you are targeted it is best to do it over the phone since he said he is getting a lot of calls from people who have completed the requirements and not getting the bonus. Not sure if he was blowing smoke or if they are cracking down…thought I would let you know.

I cancelled the app and said I will wait for a targeted offer from them since he said you usually get them from having their credit cards.

Same story. My wife opened an account using AA code but after calling back to verify, citi said thank u points was attached and said they are unable to switch to AA offer. Did few more calls bit same result. Closed the account as tied of all the hassle citi gives.

I called yesterday to confirm my AA offer and was told that it defaulted to TY points. The only option that I was given was to close the account and call in with the AA promo code. Looking at the promo terms it wouldn’t matter if I closed and then opened another account, as long as I didn’t receive the bonus, correct. Anyone else try this?

Was there ever a clear answer on if Citi Gold Checking ThankYou points can be transferred to travel partners? I’ve read all the posts, but still, no for sure answer. If I don’t get the AA offer but get the thank you points offer, can I transfer them to A) A travel partner, B) transfer to my premier credit card TY account and then transfer them to a travel partner. Is there a clear guide written somewhere?

Thanks!

William Charles

They can’t be transferred. I think this is pretty clear on our dedicated page to that bonus.

Not really clear. There is a discussion that goes on about where you were going to reach out to the marketing department to get a clear answer, and you never posted an update.

2nd, on the thank you site, it says this:

Can I combine my ThankYou Points from multiple Citi Accounts that participate in ThankYou Rewards?
Absolutely, as long as all the Citi Accounts are owned by the same person. If you have one (or more) Citi® credit cards participating in ThankYou® Rewards, eligible Citibank® consumer or business checking account and other linked banking products and services or an enrolled Citi Corporate Travel & Entertainment Card, you can combine these accounts and pool the points into your one ThankYou Member Account. Simply go to Add a Sponsor Account in the My Citi Account section to pool all your points into one place.

Please note that if you combine your ThankYou Member Accounts, any action taken concerning points from one Citi Account may affect all the points in your ThankYou Member Account.

Is there anyway to get a clear answer from Citi?

Thanks

William Charles

Taxable points are different and AFAIK these are considered taxable points. People that have these points have reported not being able to transfer. I contacted Citi and never got an answer from them.

applied and funded my account last week with the AA promotion code: 4YQY4RMDRM.

Went on chat and they apparently can’t find that promo code…

I chatted with Citi regarding the AA promation code, and he confirmed that it is not in their system. This looks dead.

How often do the AA offers appear? I’m not that interested in TY points that cannot be transferred.

applied for citi gold aadvantage promo on july 29. called two days ago to verify the promo and they couldn’t find it. they sent me a letter with the ‘resolution’ and said no promo was attached to my application (did it online). will be sending them a letter with code, a web image of the promo with the 9/30/2015 deadline and if all fails, ask them to switch me to Thank you points. i hope it works!

Has anyone has any luck funding their business checking accounts with credit cards?

I have had back and forth with their 800# and the branch people. Everyone is clueless and they think I am crazy (even though I have funded personal accounts twice with credit cards.)

So at this point I have no clue how to fund their business accounts.
