Delta has announced that starting tomorrow (4/8) it will be increasing bag fees:
- First checked bag: $45 (up from $35)
- Second checked bag: $55 (up from $45)
- Third checked bag: $200 (up from $150)
JetBlue was the first to increase fees, followed by United. As mentioned previously generally when one airline increases bag fees the other quickly fall in line and do the same. Just need American Airlines to increase bag fees now. All of the airlines are citing rising fuel costs as the reason for increasing bag fees. Increasing bag fees instead of adding a fuel surcharge has the added benefit that there is no expectation to lower those fees when fuel pricing decreases and elites/credit card holders are not affected.
