Discover Adds Best Buy to their 5% Categories for Q4 2020

Discover has added Best Buy to their list of Q4 2020 categories. Only purchases made from November 25 – December 31 count. Best Buy combines with the other Q4 retailers to the $1,500; you’re still throttled at $1,500 combined for the quarter.

The full list now includes:

  • Amazon.com
  • Walmart.com
  • Target.com
  • Best Buy (in-store, online at bestbuy.com, or through the Best Buy app)

I believe Discover did this last quarter too where they added a category sometime in middle; this is changing the Discover 5% strategies.

Activate to earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Target.com from 10/1/20 (or the date on which you activate 5%, whichever is later) through 12/31/20, and at Best Buy from 11/25/20 (or the date on which you activate 5%, whichever is later) through 12/31/20, on up to $1,500 in combined purchases. Best Buy purchases include only purchases made in-store at Best Buy, online at bestbuy.com, or through the Best Buy app. Cell phone purchases only includes the portion of the balance amount paid in-store at Best Buy, online at bestbuy.com, or through the Best Buy app. It does not include cell phone installment plans. Individual merchants and stand-alone stores within physical Best Buy locations, or on bestbuy.com, may not be eligible in this category.

I made a non-GC purchase from BestBuy on 11/26, but only 1% cashback posted on the statement. Had to chat with support and they promised it will be credited in 1-2 billing cycles.
This is a pain.. considering we have to follow up now and also 1-2 billing cycles later to ensure 5% cashback

Same thing happened with me, but I gave them an extra billing cycle to see if it would be corrected. Just got my statement with no adjustment, so I chatted with a representative and was told this:

“During 11/25/20-12/1/20 we experienced an error where qualifying purchases did not earn the 5% cashback bonus instead they earned the standard 1%, in this case this is what happened with the Best Buy purchase. Our specialists have been working on fixing this & have made manual adjustments to the purchases that fall within this time frame, you’ll be earning the 5% cashback bonus for this purchase in 1-2 billing cycles. I apologize for the inconvenience.”

Went to Best Buy a week or two ago to take advantage of Amex Offer 25 off 250 and all the AGC were raided with empty slots. Only a few $25 ones left. Not sure how often they restock. They did not have any VGC that I could find nor any other GC worth mentioning.

A week after Thanksgiving, AGC was restocked. The highest value they have are $200 max variables.

Do they sell v/mc gc? If so, what denominations and what are the fees?

Mine does not. Not even small denominations. However I did inspect thoroughly enough to see if the out of stock slots are supposed to carry them.

Made a purchase on walmart.com 2 days ago. Paid with Paypal linked to Discover. Dscover CSR verified this morning it qualified for the Q4 5% bonus. It should work identically with BBdotcom.

I might be missing something but what’s the advantage of purchasing via PayPal (linked to Discover) rather than a direct purchase using Discover card?

I was wondering that myself.

Targeted PayPal promotions stack with Discover Rewards.

A few days ago I made a payment through the Walmart app with PayPal and it did NOT get the 5% bonus when my statement closed, FYI.

How cool, thanks for the news… Given the tarnished appeal of Target Apple gc transactions, this could/might yet be a nice way to forget target and finish up Discover for this quarter…. Alas, this being 2020…. bestbuy of late also…. umm, rather crimped. Nice still to have more options.

I had a dream that I could stack this new Discover offer with the Amex 25 off 250 offer. Alas, its only a dream.

Not here in central NJ.
I haven’t seen them in several years.

They do sell Amazon gift cards.

I don’t think so. They stopped a few years ago due to fraud issues. If you find one that does, that might be the last of them.

Stack the cashback with 5% off BB GCs thru Discover rewards. Zero reason to use BB’s own credit card if rewards are the goal.

I think they mean just buying things and redeeming cashback for discounted gift card.

Okay. I guess that’s not stacking as it comes to only 5.25%. (Correct me if I’m wrong).
