- According to this datapoint cumulative deposits will work, YMMV as always. Lots of DP suggesting this works now.
The Fine Print

- Account must be open when bonus is credited.
- Bonus will be credited to the account by 11/4/19.
- Bonus is considered interest and will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT.
- Offer may be modified/withdrawn.
Avoiding Fees
Discover’s Online Savings Account does not have any fees, nor any minimum balance requirement. You can withdraw any funds you wish after fulfilling the $25,000 (or $15,000) deposit requirement.
Early Termination Fee
There is no mention of an early termination fee according to the Online Savings Account Guide. You must, at minimum, leave the account open until the bonus posts, or November 30, 2017.
Our Verdict
The deposit requirement increasing to $25,000 shouldn’t matter too much as it looks like cumulative deposits work anyway. The best part of this deal is that there is no deposit minimum length so you should be able to deposit the (or $15,000) and then immediately withdraw it. In the past the bonus has posted 5–15 days after the deposited has been received but recently it has been taking much longer. A lot of people like these Discover bonuses because they also offer a decent APY (0.40% currently), although there are better APYs available. This is one of the best savings account bonuses currently available.

- Update 11/03/2018: There is a new working link and code. This time good for applications through December 3rd, 2018.
- Update 10/09/18: There is a new working link and code. This time good for applications through October 31st, 2018.
- Update 09/10/2018: There is a new working link. This one is definitely not an affiliate link of any type.
- Update 07/20: There is a new working link that doesn’t look like it’s a NerdWallet link, but might be an affiliate link for another site.
- Update 07/12/18: There is a new working link that is valid until 7/31/2018. This is another NerdWallet link and they will get comission if you use it. I personally don’t like NerdWallet as they are affiliate link focused and don’t always post the best deals. That being said I want my readers to have the best choice possible so that’s why I’m adding it. If anybody finds a non NerdWallet link let us know. You might also just be able to use promo code SAVE718E1 or SAVE718E2 and it should work. We don’t receive anything if you use the NerdWallet link or any other bank account bonus or credit card link as we believe remaining independent is important.
- Update 06/05/18: Bonus has been extended until 6/29/18
- Update 05/18/18: Gadget & rediff found a new working code: SAVE518E1. This means NerdWallet won’t get paid when you use this code. This link should also work, but not sure if it’s one time use or not.
- Update 05/09/18: Deal is back and valid until 6/4/18. New promo code is NW518. Sadly I think this is an exclusive offer to NerdWallet and they get paid if you use this link. Personally I hate NerdWallet because I find they suggest inferior offers on a regular basis but this Discover Savings bonus is a great deal. I’ve tried to get Discover to agree to give money to charity instead of paying out affiliate commissions but they never respond.
- Update 03/27/18 : Deal has been extended until 05/04/2018. New promo code is SAVE318D2. Hat tip to reader Gadget.
- The Discover savings bonus has been extended again until April 2nd, 2018.
- Offer has been extended again. You must now open it by 02/28/18 and deposit by 03/14/18
- Originally posted on September 19th, 2017. Reposting on November 2nd, 2017 because the offer has been extended. The $200 offer now requires a deposit of $25,000 instead of $20,000. Bonuses for AAA & AAII have not been extended yet.

Is the 7 year rule a meme? Can I churn if I completed last year
I'm not holding out too much hope, but seems my discover curse may be due to be lifted soon (brought about by applying for a credit card and never activating it):
"Thank you for taking the time to apply for a Discover Account. Your application is now in process and being reviewed. Please allow 2 business days for the application process to be completed."
the web request had this in the status: applicationStatus: VERIFICATION_PROCESSING
Some on the forum said Discover only holds records for 7 years but that does not seem to be the case, or YMMV. I did this promo eight years ago and still got this message today: "our records show that you are ineligible for this promotion because you have opened a similar account in the past."
I remember they will let you know if you are not qualify for the bonus and ask if you want to continue.
since it says "new customers only" I would think it's 100% impossible to do for the folks on this site. They go by SS # so you need a p2/p3/p4.We have to wait for the email offering the same to existing Discover savings customers. I have rec'd the 200.00 bonus 3x on 3 different Discover savings acct. I have about 1.80 in total on all 3. Their interest rate is not too bad now.
When you say3 different accounts, I assume you mean for 3 different people
no. I have 3 savings accts in my name opened a very long time ago. They did not care back then. When I rec'd the bonuses on those accts, I xferred to a higher savings rate bank or CU, but left about 1.00 in each. They had low rates when others were higher, now they are all about the same unless you have millions.
Interesting. I didn't bother to keep the one that I had. I didn't know that they send offers to existing customers.
Anyone with an account in 2019 try this?
When I tried to log in To Discover Bank on the application, it had an address I haven't lived at in 8+ years. When I log in to the credit card, it shows a closed savings and checking account. If I can see the closed accounts when I log in to my Discover credit card, I have to think Discover can still see it.
Whats the chance of the $500 offer coming back in the future (I realize no one knows for sure)?
From looking at the bonus history on this page, the last time they offered $500 bonus before this year was 2022. Since due to the recent Capital One/Discover merger and no guarantee that "transfer canceling trick" will still work for Discover bonus in 2028, I am thinking this $400 bonus may be the best chance to try the trick for the big bonus. Of course, I can be wrong.
This is a very solid point. I think I'll see how much money I can get together while still doing other bonuses, and decide based on that.
As I mentioned in a comment below, you might be able to check for any bonuses available any time there’s one you know of but it’s not of the $500 variety. I had received a mailer for a different bonus ($300, I think), and toward the end of the application process they showed me a pop-up with all of the available bonuses. That's when I saw the $500 version--which I wasn't aware of at the time--and selected it rather than use the code for the bonus I'd been mailed about.
Of course, I've never started an application and not finished it, so I don't know how any of that works or affects one's situation (if at all). But I thought I'd share my experience as something to know and think about.
Thanks, that's interesting!
It's a lifetime once, so I'm going to wait.
Good point!
Thank you for posting this. I just opened an account with Chex frozen. I can't believe it's that easy to get $400. I also can't believe it's been available for years and I had no idea.
I know I had a Discover checking account in the 90's, but I couldn't remember about a savings account. I called them to ask, and they had no records of me at all. They said they keep records for only 7 years.
"Once in a lifetime" rule, Discover edition?
If it is true they keep records for only 7 years, that would be good news. I had a Discover savings account for this bonus in early 2019, so I could try again in 2026.
@guest_2133000 Where is this information coming from about this purging after 7 years?
Read the post above mine.
I was denied a checking account bonus last year after having a checking account with them in 2010, despite not having gotten a bonus then.
Does having a Capital One savings account disqualify you from Discover savings bonus, or are they still separate in that regard?
At the moment still separate
P3 received an email offer from Discover, not sure if targeted:
“Earn over 5X the National Savings Average, plus up to a $400 bonus when you open an Online Savings Account. Apply by 09/18/25 using the code BONUS825E2.
Deposit $15,000 or $45,000 within 45 days of opening your account to earn $150 or $400.”
Just received the promo via snail mail with a slightly different code but looks like it´s available to any first time savings customer:
http://www.discover.com/BONUS825D2
I also received this but with the code BONUS825D2
