The Offer

Direct link to offer (search Visa; not yet live)

  • Staples stores will be offering fee-free $100 Visa gift cards this week.

The Fine Print

  • Limit 5 per customer per day.
  • Offer valid in store only.
  • Valid 12/25/22 – 12/31/22

Our Verdict

They typically do these deals on $200 Visa gift cards and up to 8, this time it’s on $100 Visa cards and max 5. Let’s hope this isn’t the wave of the future. Use a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores.

Has gone to https://mygift.giftcardmall.com/ and set a pin for one of these visa gift cards? Then use the card to buy a money order and make it payable to yourself so It can be deposited to your bank account?

What a cashier I dealt with, was told I needed to show id so I provided a picture as I always do to avoid carrying the id, was told that I needed the physical id… I asked if he was gonna scan the id or something and he repeated the same thing, I was gonna ask if he needed to take a bite out of it, but I’ve done min wage jobs and they suck… I just laughted and walked away

A picture of an ID isn’t going to fly anywhere

Fortunately I’ve got a positive DP that I was not expecting. Initially walked into the store and only saw a bunch of low value MC cards.

I was typing up a negative DP when an associate asked if I needed anything. I said no and they asked if I was looking for $200 Visa gift cards. I said I needed $100 increments because that was what was on sale. They radioed the manager asking if the deal wasn’t on $200 cards, to which the manager walked over and confirmed they were only on $100 cards. Manager then proceeded to look under one of the registers, pull out a stack of bundled gift cards, and scanned a $100 VISA to confirm they didn’t have the fee. Scanned 5 for me and later restocked the shelf as I was leaving. Probably the best experience I’ve ever had in a Staples- they will all be getting good survey reviews as per usual.

The specific card he grabbed was a $100 VISA Gift Card with gold shimmer packaging (no bow or present design) and a $5.95 purchase fee. Interestingly, it says it is issued by MetaBank and not Pathward, which was causing a problem for me last week at OD/OM.

Zero for two now. First Office Max not ringing up the discount. Now Staples saying they don’t have any because the store display is now a TSA center. OK, whatever. Disappointing.

DP: $100 Everywhere cards (at least Grocery Everywhere) do NOT fall under this sale.

What fee card? The old 4.95 or new 5.95?

These were $5.95. None of the $4.95 ones were on display. I’ll try a Fuel Everywhere card tomorrow just in case.

I went to my local Staples on the 24th just to see what they had. Lots of $50 and $25 VGC and $100 MC. No $100 VGC. I’m sure it’s not a coincidence.

I don’t recall Staples doing a sale on $100 VGC before. The interesting thing is whether Everywhere cards fall under this sale.

What’s the deal with everywhere cards? How are they different from the $200 ones?

The main difference that folks here are generally interested in actually doesn’t matter for Staples, but when OfficeMax/Depot does one of their $15 off $300 in VGC deals, Everywhere cards are a few dollars more profitable each because the purchase fee is lower than regular VGCs.

My interest in them here is because Everywhere VGCs are also a little less hassle to liquidate at Walmart than regular ones. (Regular ones are limited to $99/swipe, whereas Everywhere cards have no such limit.)

Right, at Office Depot, they run the $15 off of $300 deal, and I look for the Grocery Everywhere cards with the lower fees. But if there’s no fee (at Staples), this doesn’t matter. I try not to liquidate at Walmart because it seems to vary by store and some gift cards won’t run.

Yeah, I’ve been going to one WM for years now for manufactured spend purposes. The folks at the MoneyCenter/Customer Service know me and my process, and I know–for now–exactly which cards will and won’t work. I’ll occasionally try my luck at a different WM (with varying success rates) if I’m in another part of town and I’ve got a card burning a hole in my pocket, but I usually just play it safe at “my” WM.

12/26-12/31, really bc you’re likely not gonna find a Staples open on Christmas Day.
