F.A.Q’s About Changes To Marriott/SPG Cards

Yesterday it was announced that Marriott, Chase & American Express would be making changes to the line up of Marriott credit cards. Readers had a number of questions regarding these changes so I created this F.A.Q to answer some of the most common questions.

Will The American Express Cards Be Treated As A New Product?

Despite the name changes, these cards are still considered the same product and won’t be treated as a new card for sign up bonuses purposes. This has happened before with name changes (e.g Hilton Surpass became Hilton Ascend) and it has never been treated as a new product.

Are They Adding New Benefits To The SPG/Marriott Bonvoy Business Card?

The annual fee will be increasing to $125 from $95, on March 28th, 2019 you will be able to start earning an additional free night if you spend $60,000 on purchases in a calendar year. Free night certificate is good for any property costing 35,000 points or less.

Keep in mind this card now earns 2x points per $1 spent, whereas previously it effectively earned 3x points per dollar spent.

  • Before: Spend $60,000 & get 180,000 points ($95 annual fee)
  • After: Spend $60,000 & get 120,000 points + free night certificate worth a maximum of 35,000 points ($125 annual fee).
