Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Cash back checking account has no monthly fee to worry about.

Early Account Termination Fee

I wasn’t able to find an up to date fee schedule, so I’m not sure if an EATF is charged. In the past it was required to keep the account open for 180 days or you would forfeit the bonus but that is not included in the fine print of this offer. Shouldn’t be a big issue since you can keep the account open for free anyway.

Our Verdict

Always nice to see a bonus with no direct deposit requirement, downside is that each debit card transaction needs to be $10+ but still a bonus worth doing. Because of that we will add it to our list of the best checking account bonuses.

Membership is open to anyone who pays $10. They have a rewards cc thats on my list to eventually apply for.

“You’re eligible for Chartway membership if:

-Someone in your family is currently a Chartway member
-You or an immediate family member works for one of the 750 companies who have chosen to offer Chartway’s credit union benefits to their employees

I’m in NJ. So $10 donation should work?

I think there’s a typo in the promo code. It should be “Holiday19.” Thanks!

Danny
Danny

They have a 3% back on all purchases account (doesn’t seem to be one of the qualified ones though). Interesting…

Yeah its capped at $10 back per month & require $500 DD & 10 debit card transactions/month. Meh.

Anyone know if you can still fund this up to $1,500 with a credit card?

Sammy

CC funding still works as my app went through and was approved just now.

can you doublecheck that promo code? It’s supposed to be “holiday” right?

Promo code: HOLIDAY19

when you get to the promo section, you can’t type the code. they’re nice enough to have a dropdown with the promo code. it’s holiday19, by the way.

Based on comments in previous posts, they are Chex sensitive (including shutting down accounts after opening). YMMV.

If I already have an account or had one in the past can I still get the bonus on a new account? Thanks.

I’ve never had my accounts close right after opening. What happens to the money in the account? Do you get the check in the mail? Or do they give you grace period where you can withdraw money to other bank institutes?

SpicyPadThai
SpicyPadThai

So, if you sign up and make $10 donation and get your account closed… $10 is gone, right?

Depends on the bank/cu on how they handle approvals that end up being denied

Usually they just cancel the funding transaction and it never goes thru.

Sandy Spring Bank will mail you a check in about 10 days.

If they reject you, you don’t get to do transactions on your terms. The only time I have seen a bank do that is if you are an established customer (been a customer at least a month), and you get a shutdown letter in the mail. You have 30 days to take care of your crap before they close it and mail you a check for anything remaining or residual interest. Discover did it to me, primarily due to failed trial deposits.

Yep. Rejected because of Chex. They say too many recent account openings.

Says allows credit card funding on this page.
Under the DPs, it shows CC’s are no longer accepted.

On the application page, it shows they are accepted.

Just when I say am done with bonuses for this yer another one pops up for Florida. I need to recoup the cost paid for a recent appraisal so am definitely doing this one after I get clear to close and funded. CUs normally do a hard inquiry so I need to wait.

No branches in Florida. Need to update title.

Looks like in FL they are affiliated to several local banks like Addition Financial. Not sure if that would qualify one to apply for this bonus. Also, if they do qualify, then I am wondering if anyone who recently did the Additional Financial bonus would qualify.

chirovegan

I’m not a big fan of Addition Financial, formerly CFE. I had difficulty with direct deposits to and from the account and got charged a few returned fees by Barclay because of this. I would go in branch and confirm the checking and routing numbers with them and I was using the right #s. I just gave up with them and closed the account.

Looks like $1,500.00 in CC funding. but won’t accept Amex.

I am not really familiar with credit unions, is it normal that you have to open a savings account with a $500 min balance to get to the next step and open a checking account?

I live in VA but not one of their listed counties, so I would do the $10 donation to open the account.

Tony
Tony

Try applying on desktop. The mobile application is formatted weird to where it shows opening a savings. I applied today on desktop and it allowed me to only open a cash back checking and main share, not a savings account.

Jethro Tuller
Jethro Tuller

It’s normal to have to open a savings, but usually the amount is about $5 to $25, not $500.

Jeremy

You sure it’s a soft pull? “Please note additionally that an inquiry to a credit bureau will be submitted.”

Shawn

Can confirm was soft in a prior year
