Update 1/9/25: Deal is back for Friday 1/10/25 through Thursday 1/16/25 (there might be different dates in the various store chains)
The Offer
Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular:
- Get 2x/3x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.
Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.
Gas Points Details
Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.
Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.
- You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
- See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
- Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
Our Verdict
Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well these deals are more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery. Stack with 10% Chase Offer.
Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $1,500 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card. Also note that some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so be sure to buy the full $1,500 worth in a single transaction.

Anyone is able to use Vanilla gift card to pay Eversource (MA) successfully in 2025? If you do, please share what you do to make it work? I was planning to use the fund to pay for my utilities so I’m really anxious now? Does calling the customer service help? Please help!
I have used Vanilla cards to buy VGCs or MCGCs at Staples fee-free and then use those to pay bills online. There’s definitely some drawbacks to this solution, but it does work.
Thank you. I have thought about this too. Giving up the bonus points from using credit card is hard. But when we have bills to pay, that is a viable option.
Does not work for me at most utilities. Works for insurance, medical bills and Medicare though. So if you have that try them. You can also try to add it to GooglePay and then if your utility takes google pay pay from there. This has worked for me one time.
Store said can’t buy four cause the fees go over the $2000 limit, didn’t think it was worth arguing over. Can I buy another one for $500 later and hit the $2000 limit?
Yes, you can buy another one for 500 later, as the points are normally awarded for up to $2000 total in spend per 1 week promo period, per account. Better yet, save a trip, and get 3 cards with 500 load and the last one for perhaps $475, keeping the total under $2000 total.
smart advice – I think it’s just based on gift card amount though I got credited 30000 pts for $1500
I probably won’t get the Vanilla GC for a while. Bought $1000 in Dec 2024 and tried to use it to pay utility bill and property tax which were used to be totally fine. But when I tried to use it for the last few days, they were all declined. I looked up Reddit and changed the name to Gift Card and still failed.

I find the staples ones more easy to use but the vanilla ones do work for my utilities
Limit is $1500 per household
Stop and Shop ad says $2000 limit. Reading the fine print, I see they say you can’t use a Vanilla card to pay for a gift card. I did precisely that a few weeks ago.
Make that 1/10.
Friendly reminder chase freedom is 5% grocery this quarter.
Thanks, 2x is Meh but useful get started on Chase Freedom. Hopefully 3x comes back for March.
Two of my accounts had the points posted, one did not. Not sure what’s going on with that
Since Vanilla Visas are hard to liquidate, I used one to buy another Vanilla Visa. Gave the CS rep $6 cash, then swiped my $500 Vanilla Visa. I then drained the nickel on some groceries at self checkout. $5.95 for 1500 points, worth $30 at the pump.
I tried the same thing at the same store, but with a different CS rep. After I asked for $500, she said I had to use only one form of payment, so she wouldn’t let me use cash plus Vanilla. I hadn’t done this month’s spend on my Citi Custom Cash, so I paid with that. Next I went to Lidl, where the Pathward VGCs have a $6.95 fee. I asked for $493 to be loaded onto the card, and I successfully paid with my $500 Vanilla.
Confirmed, live in Northern Virginia. 3X on Vanilla Visa. Mine liquidated fine.
Which version did you buy? I purchased the vanilla variable and did not get points. It’s been several hours.
Update: my points posted about 6 hours after purchase.
That’s a little concerning that the points didn’t post immediately like they have for the past several promos.
Is there a list of merchants these still work online for? I can confirm I bought something from ikea and it went through
Do you have the ad preview for next week Dec 13-19?
