[Expired] Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 3x Fuel Points on Visa Gift Cards (10/22-10/28)

Deal has ended, view more Giant deals by clicking here.

Update 10/21/21: Deal is back and valid until 10/22-10/28. Hat tip to GC Galore

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular for June 4 – June 10:

  • Get 3x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.

Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

  • You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Our Verdict

This deal will start immediately after the 3x Mastercard deal ends on June 3rd. Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well these deals are more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery. Stack with 10% Chase Offer.

Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card. Also note that some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so be sure to buy the full $2,000 worth in a single transaction.

I bought a card yesterday and meant to use my Citi Custom Cash for my monthly 5% back on up to $500. Also meant to only buy a $494 card since I had points already on my S&S card to get to the 1500 to cash out for gas, but had bought a $500 card Transaction worked fine, got my points, and then realized a little while later that I had used my Rewards+ card instead (d’oh). Fortunately that card gives 2% on grocery purchases, so not all bad, since I had a use for it where I would only have gotten 2.625% on my BofA card. Then I went to a different store and bought a $494 card with the correct Citibank card :).

So now I have enough points for two fill-ups. I also bought the pink flowery package and got the points right away.

Bought $500 VGC (new pink type) in NJ S&S along with milk and points posted instantly on the receipt. So appears fixed now at least for the newer VGCs.

Like others, I didn’t get points either this weekend. First transaction was only VGC. Did another transaction with VGC and expired (yellow sticker) bakery cause I’m cheap AF. No dice. I wonder if I added non-clearance grocery, if I would get points.

Just bought 1500 at Giant in Northern VA. First time using this week’s promo. No points hours later. Will have to call Monday. This is starting to be a royal pain.

DP: Did $1K x 2 last week on the MCGC deal and had no issue points posting. Did another $1K and points did not post. I assumed it was because of the $2K limit per household. I called CS and a very nice Woman took all the receipt info and said it would take her about 1/2 hour before I’d see points post. Sure enough, points posted I was suppose to receive 3K points. She must have had a fat finger because I received a whooping 33K points … lol. I’m going to do the same $3K amount this week on the VGC’s and see what happens. Trying to reach the $15K spend on JB for Mosaic by EOY.

Just some datapoint, hopefully, useful to some of you.

Once I canceled a transaction after entering my phone number and agreeing to use 1500 fuel points for $1.50 off/gallon at a pump. I cancelled because the pump had some issue. Unfortunately, when I tried on another pump, I was notified I had no current fuel points.
I learned and confirmed that the points were refunded to my account only a few hours later.

So note possibly delayed fuel points refund for a canceled transaction at a fuel pump.

Also, conversion of pts to fuel points takes some time (at least 20 min in one instant) to be effective.

conversion of pts to grocery pts also takes like over 20 mins in my exp

My experience is that the fuel points showed up almost immediately in the Fuel Rewards app. So i guess it’s YMMV.

You can easily convert to either fuel points or grocery points in your Stop & Shop grocery app. I noticed in the past that if I try to convert at the gas station before I start fueling then the app has issues. I now convert to fuel points at least 15 minutes before driving to Shell gas station. I also noticed that using my Shell Fuel Rewards number to log into the gas tank sometimes does not recognize my points. However, if I enter the entire Stop & Shop grocery loyalty card number then points are recognized.

Are you having trouble at an S&S or Shell gas station? I wonder if it makes a difference. I only go to Shell and check the Shell fuel rewards app to make sure the points are actually there before heading to the station because I’ve run into the same delay in getting points converted over.

Michael Meyer

The nearby Stop & Shop gas station closed a couple of years ago so now I only use Shell gas stations. I miss the days when I could use the Chase app for Shell gas station pump purchases. Stop & Shop points, Shell Fuel Rewards, and Chase contactless credit card purchases were organized, efficient, and easy. Unfortunately, many gas station attendants were not aware of the feature or program and acted like I was stealing gas at the pump. I assume Chase did not properly communicate to the Shell gas station attendants the program and how it functioned. Now we have to be cautious of credit card skimmer devices at the pump.

If you use S&S number you loose the extra 5 cents that you could get by using the Shell Fuel rewards number (Gold discount). I have never had an issue using Shell fuel rewards number. Just check before you head to the gas station that your fuel rewards account has the points and like you said transfer them well before you head to the gas station and that should take care of it.

Michael Meyer

I miss the days when I could use the Chase app for Shell gas station pump purchases. I would prefer that the Shell gas app allowed Chase credit card contactless pump purchases. This would be convenient instead of entering in ALT ID or Stop & Shop loyalty card numbers at the pump.
