Giant, Stop & Shop, Martin’s: 2x Fuel Points on Vanilla Visa Gift Cards

Update 3/15/24: Deal is back

Update 1/9/24: Deal is coming back at 2x on Vanilla Visa cards starting January 12th through 18th, per the image shown here (ht reader Gerald) Stacks well with the Amex Offer.

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular:

  • Get 2x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.

Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

  • You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Our Verdict

This deal will start immediately after the 3x Mastercard deal ends on June 3rd. Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well these deals are more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery. Stack with 10% Chase Offer.

Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card. Also note that some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so be sure to buy the full $2,000 worth in a single transaction.

Deal History:

  • Update 12/7/23: Back again for 12/8 through 12/14, 3x points on Vanilla Visa gift cards. Check your local circulars to make sure your store is running this deal.
  • Update 11/24/23: Back again, this time for 3x points on Vanilla Visa gift cards, valid 11/24 – 11/30. Check your local circulars to make sure your store is running this deal.
  • Update 9/14/23: It’s been years, and this deal finally back for 2x fuel points on Vanilla Visa gift cards from 9/15 – 9/21.
  • Update 10/21/21: Deal is back and valid until 10/22-10/28. Hat tip to GC Galore

Apologies if following has been previously noted/discussed —

My Giant and Fuel Rewards accounts have been linked for a long time, such that Giant fuel points could be used at any FR (Shell) station. In this past, this was the case at FR stations well outside of the Giant/S&S footprint, e.g. South Carolina. Recently, however, when I tried this, I only got my standard 5 cent FR discount, despite the FR account showing several dollars worth of discount points from Giant.

tldr; My working conclusion is that Giant points cannot be used outside of the Giant store footprint, even at FR stations. Any comments welcome.

Bought 2 and points posted almost immediately. Just be aware that the newer white jacket cards have a 6.95 fee (the actual card number starts with 40) versus 5.95 fee for the older silver jacket cards (the actual card number starts with 41). Saw this only after buying. I guess the card issuer does not matter…I have seen issuers name Metabank, Inncomm, Pathward and Sutton on all varieties.

Pathward is the new name for MetaBank. MetaBank/Pathward and Sutton are the 2 issuers (banks) of the Vanilla gc. Incomm is the servicer of all of the Vanilla gc in S&S.

So the new cards have part of the barcode on the card and on the packaging. CS lady told me to not take the ones where you can see a sticker was applied over the card barcode.

 Chuck,

Can you change the title in this post from “Stop&Shop” to “Stop & Shop”. The reason I’m requesting this is because when I searched the site for “Stop & Shop”, this post did not come up.

The reason I was looking for this post is because I wanted to let you know about the 2X Vanilla promo starting tomorrow but I saw that HarryTheFirstHarry already alerted you to this below.

FWIW – Confirming that the 2x Vanilla offer is in the Giant (MD) circular for Northern Virginia, week beginning Jan 12. Verbiage says “limit $2,000 per household.”

what nobody wants to talk about anymore is how extraordinarily difficult it’s become to “spend” (ie liquidate) these vgc’s….. (all the well known avenues, non organic, that I used to do, eg, mo’s @ WMT, PO, Kroger, even Foodlion…. no longer work, at least not for me) and you get your head taken off if you ask, lest you ruin it for those who know where it can still be done, or so the knowing refrain goes. Any forums, open or closed, where enlightenment can be found? Not willing to go for these anymore (even if they come back @ 3x) w/o more clarity on what still works.

Thanks, and yes,, another venerable idea. I actually tried that though recently with county property taxes (in VA)…. spent hours trying to get it to work, then realized a. I had to do it one card at a time, register each card individually, then remember to figure in service fees and even leave space for unspecified processor charges — before making the payment. Gave up last try, as royal pain for the $200 Staples fare. Yet might be worth it with the $500 denom…. ps, yup, I’ve also been unable to use the vgc’s to buy gc’s at Kroger since last summer.

I could not get any IRS tax payment service to take them the last time I bought these in December. Ended up paying my insurance with the cards that I bought. I bought one more today because I am a glutton for punishment and don’t learn from my mistakes, Fortunately, NY accepted it for my estimated tax payment. I had already paid the IRS using PayPal with my Chase card last month. Sadly, they still charged me 2.2% as if it were a credit card.

For real. It’s hard to even do normal spend with them because they don’t work on Paypal and are blocked by many other places online. Can’t even pay my utilities or internet with them online: blocked, blocked, and blocked.
