[Update] iTunes Giftcards Can Now Be Used For All Apple Products, Including Devices (Wow!)

(Update 8/2/20: We have confirmation that (like Amex does) Chase has been coding Apple ID load as streaming for the 10x promo – source. That’s a sweet 10x UR points on Apple credit, up to $1,500, which could be useful to some. My guess is the coding will remain constant, but there’s always a risk that the coding could change, so keep the possibility in mind.)

iTunes gift cards can now be used on iTunes and for any hardware and products at Apple stores and on apple.com, such as iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, etc. Wow!

Single Apple Gift Card

In a major shakeup in the iTunes/Apple gift card market, Apple unveiled today a change whereby iTunes and Apple gift cards are interchangeable.

Previously, iTunes gift cards were only usable in the app store for things like music/movie downloads and software downloads, but were not able to buy Apple products in Apple stores or on apple.com, such as iPhone or Mac. And Apple gift cards were not usable for app store purchases. Going forward, there’s a single gift card which can be used for both hardware and software.

This change is already live, and the apple.com system already allows applying iTunes gift cards at checkout. It shows a limitation of 8 gift cards per checkout, but  you can apply the cards to your iTunes balance and then just use the combined balance, so there’s essentially no limit.

Existing Cards & Balances

Existing iTunes/Apple gift cards get the same usage as new cards to be issued, so you use your existing iTunes cards for Apple hardware products. Also, your iTunes balance can now be used at checkout on apple.com (and presumably in Apple stores too).

Analysis

The reason this is all exciting is because iTunes gift cards are frequently available at discounts and are passed around people quite a lot, whereas Apple gift cards are much more rare and can often be resold near their face value as people value Apple products quite a lot.

Before you get too excited: my guess is that Apple made the decision to stop offering iTunes gift cards at steep discounts like they’ve been doing until this point. (Maybe this was partially spurred by the lawsuit against them about iTunes gift cards being used for fraud.)

And, so, I see can see a few angles here, from a practical perspective:

  • If you have a balance in your Apple ID/iTunes account, it’s much easier to use now.
  • If you are holding iTunes gift cards for resale, you just made a lot of money; while previously you can maybe get 70-90% (depending on your relationships), you should now be able to get much more.
  • Maybe Apple will still run some smaller sales, and these cards are now more interesting.
  • Lots of people give out small iTunes gift cards for holidays, and many recipients weren’t necessarily interested in digital goods from Apple, but now, you can save up all the small cards to reduce your next iPhone (or whatever) purchase.
  • My feeling is that there’ll be some nice angles on this specifically for the next few weeks/months as businesses – and Apple themselves – fully catches up with the change. For example, some places (e.g. a shopping portal) might still offer steep bonuses to take payout in iTunes gift cards. These will probably peter out over time, but likely lots of the systems will still be in place for the time being. Or maybe some points app or credit card allows you to redeem iTunes gift cards at a discount. Etc, etc.
  • Hopefully iTunes purchases will still trigger streaming credit bonuses and bonus categories, such as the $20 monthly streaming credit on the Platinum card. Assuming no coding change, these can now be used to save up for an Apple hardware purchase, like an iPhone.
  • Even without discounts, hopefully Apple will continue to make iTunes gift cards available at grocery stores and office supply stores and that like. That could mean nice discounts/earnings with cards that offer bonus categories there, and could amount to a nice savings on your next iPhone (and possibly some gift card reselling opportunities as well). Also, if your grocery store has a fuel points program, it’ll be even more lucrative.
    • Similar opportunity with deals on Amazon: assuming Amazon continues to sell iTunes gift cards, you can use all of those shop-with-points deals on iTunes gift cards, and get major discounts on your next iPhone purchase (or resell the gift cards to someone who buys Apple products). Also, you can use any credit cards that have an Amazon category bonus (e.g. Freedom quarterly category) on iTunes gift cards.

After all is said and done, be sure you have a plan for what to do with Apple gift cards; don’t buy these without a clear and profitable liquidation plan.

Any data points if AMEX codes individual iTunes purchases (like buying a $0.99 song) as “streaming?”

It’s the weirdest thing. One successful Apple ID load last week coded as 10x on CSR. Every attempt this week, no matter the amount, has been declined. Other Chase cards with the same primary account holder also being declined! No fraud alerts from Chase. Amex works fine, Chase card with a different primary account holder also works fine ($5 test loads). Same Apple ID.

Only thing I can think of is Chase is limiting it to one transaction per service per month?? Since streaming is usually billed monthly. I don’t see any indication that others who did multiple loads had to wait, though.

I have the same issue! It works fine with Amex but not with CSR. I wonder there is something wrong with the CSR. Will try again tomorrow.

So apparently it was a fraud alert, but the email/text didn’t come through until over 12 hours later. Got it straightened out and a load over $100 worked fine. Hoping to do a couple more without issue to finish out the category over the next week.

Any recent experience loading Apple ID with CSR to get 10x? I figured I’ll max out the category before the end of the month if it still codes in prep for the Apple products launching this fall.

I tried to buy $100 last week and finally posted to my CSR account as APPLE.COM/US, category Shopping, so I only got 100 points. Is this over or did I do it wrong?

Where did you load it? I used the App store on my phone with CSR as the primary payment method and got 10x. It showed up on my statement as APPLE.COM/BILL

Thanks, looks like I may have did it wrong as I went on Apple.com to do it. I’ll try it on my iPhone to purchase credit via the App Store and sounds like it should work that way.

Well I just found out I have a $45 iTunes/Apple balance. Totally forgot I got free $5 iTunes gift cards from one of the Sprint Rewards app freebies a while back. Never bought anything from iTunes ever so I never checked.

Heads up if you buy off of iTunes use chase to get an extra 2x on e-gift cards and purchases only. So 12x on chase cards nice better yet Alaska is offering 3x per 1$ so get 10x chase points plus 3x Alaska points plus they have the customer appreciation bonus going till 8/9 spend $500 get 1500 Alaska points worth at least 25$ I think? Good deal anyway

Has anyone loaded their iTunes balance with $500+ via CSR for 10x points? Just curious how this feature is working out for people. Considering loading $800+ to purchase a Macbook Air.

So what will be the policy with buying hardware internationally. Say you want to buy an iphone in europe in euros but you only have a balance in dollars. Will apple perform an exchange rate or is it not an option?

For the itunes library this cannot be done, but they also have different app stores and app availability. Apple stores are more widely available and standard

I don’t think there is an option to exchange. I was not able to use my US Apple gift cards in Germany.

Does that 10X CSR need to be activated, or is it only for people who got the CSR after a certain date? I’m not seeing any mention of it on my list of Benefits; just Lyft and Doordash.

Do you see 10x on streaming in your list of benefits? Apple runs Apple TV + and Apple Music which count as streaming so this is why they are giving 10x on “iTunes” purchases…

Thanks for the response. Strangely, I don’t. Just Lyft Pink, 10x points on Lyft Rides, Dash Pass, and DoorDash $60 Credit (and then the normal benefits like Global Entry and the 1.5x when redeeming UR for Travel).

So I guess this doesn’t apply to pre-refresh cards. I think I PC’d back in March.

I had to hunt around to find it on my account. Finally spotted it in perhaps an obvious location: when viewing the Sapphire Reserve account, it has the summary on top, and recent activity list below. In between those are two “ads” – one for Chase Offers, and one that says “Now earn 10X total points on streaming.” That links here, which looks like a general link implying that it applies to all CSR card holders: https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/sapphire-reserve-benefits
