Our Verdict

The standard deal at Kroger is 2x fuel points on gift card purchases, and they’ll occasionally release offers for 4x. Usually, every 1000 fuel points will get you a discount of $1 per gallon with a 35-gallon limit, a max value of $35 per 1000-points, though these details do vary by store and region.

You can also get free cell phone service with Kroger when you earn fuel rewards points. There’s also a gift card coupon to get $5 off when buying two BJ’s Restaurant gift cards totaling $25 or more.

so the math on this…

105.95*4 = 423 fuel points = $0.42/gallon x 35 gallons = a theoretical $14.70 discount, assuming u actually buy 35 gallons.

more likely, you can only fill up 1 tank, and most tanks aren’t 35 gallons, but closer to 15 gallons, so saving $6.30 on it.

$6.30 – 5.95 = $0.35 profit. Doesn’t seem worth it for most people filling up a typical car tank

assuming you accumulate enough fuel points to max out the discount (1000 FP), you get…

$0.35/423 = $x/1000, $x=$0.83 profit?

of course, if you CAN maximize the 35 gallons, and maximize the 1000 FP, $x would = $20.68, which makes it worth doing for sure

Assuming you buy the GC’s with the Amex BCP for 6% CB, you’d net an additional 105.95*3*0.06 = $19.07 in cash back, so that brings the theoretical maximum return to $39.75

or my math sucks

Most people doing these deals are also using a card that earns a category bonus. In addition people bring a container to max out the 35 gallon limit.

Yep. Going on 3 years of the Kroger gig and I’ve never gotten under 35 gallons. And yes, when its VGC or MGC I always use Amex BCP. THEN I turn around and use the $100 gift cards to buy Amazon gift cards. The offers are frequent enough that I’ve paid almost nothing for 3 cars for three years. Haven’t cared to calculate the lost opportunity cost – and have not added in the annual fee for Amex BCP. I’m happy.

Yea. Invested in some decent jerry cans from ebay. Prior to that, a $20 pump from amazon and real crappy cans from walmart. Unfortunately the pump doesn’t fit in the jerry cans but the jerry cans pour out like 20x faster than the walmart cans so it’s an even trade. I went a little nuts in November and racked up 4,500 points. I have 1,500 left. Not sure I’ll be able to take full advantage of the last 500 but those were from regular old grocery shopping anyway. Also use BCP to buy the giftcards and then BCP for a kroger gift card. Buy gas with that. It’s not much work and hey… $ is $.

Ad doesn’t specifically mention $200 cards as eligible. Sours the deal if those aren’t included.

So $500 Meta VGC won’t work for this?

Kroger doesn’t sell $200’s that I’ve seen, and no, it doesn’t work on variable $500’s. The highest VGC that I’ve seen are the $100’s

Does anyone happen to know if Kroger’s digital coupon will work at their other brands? I.e I live by Kwick Shop but no Kroger’s. Can I load the Kroger’s coupon and buy a vgc and get 4x fuel points? Thx

YMMV. Did not receive fuel points from a Ralphs offer used at a Fry’s grocery. Manager in store added the points manually. Also tried using a Vons offer at a Safeway store last month. It did not work. However, I emailed customer service and was given the adjustment. In the email it was explained that my offer applied only to their specific SoCal chain.
