MPX No Longer Earns 3/5x With Chase Card

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders have been able to earn three Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent on purchases made through United MileagePlus X (MPX) with merchants that would normally earn 3x. Likewise Chase Ink Plus cardholders have been able to earn 5x on categories that would normally earn 5x (e.g office supply stores). This has been a popular option since MPX stopped earning 5x on the American Express Platinum card. Sadly Chase cards are no longer earning these 3x/5x. We will update the payments workshop to reflect this.

Ugh.

Last week I purchased a Domino’s GC, I only got 1x UR.

the loopholes are dwindling. Whats left?

Ender

Don’t think this was a loophole. Apparently chase worked hard to have MPX transaction coded correctly. For example in the past when you buy uber gc through MPX you would earn 3x/2x, but when you buy Amz you only get 1x. Not sure why chase decided to change this…

NOOOOOOOOOOO.

Can someone confirm if this restriction applies also to the Chase Freedom?

Is it because MPX changed their MCC, or is Chase ignoring the MCC?

This was always hit-or-miss anyway

It is not. It has been working fine for quite a long time…

And the hits keep on coming.

I can understand Amex making the MPX cut since they were being way too overinclusive by allowing ANY MPX purchase to earn 5x with the Plat. But Chase seemed to be doing it exactly right, ensuring that you only earned the bonus points if the underlying merchant actually warranted it. Was tailored exactly as it should be, and was not unfair on either end. No clue why they felt the need to cut this. Boy do the hits keep on coming.

Sad face. 😟

I’m missing something, but if you’ve already earned 3x/5x points normally with these merchants, why would you need to go through MPX?

For the additional United miles on top of it…

Which is how they advertised it as a triple-dip.

On March 15th I got 3x for Starbucks on MPX with the CSR. Can try to reload my and see if it posts 3x.

Chuck

Please let us know. Could be the change occurred after the 15th.

I did a Starbucks reload on Monday and can confirm that it’s now down to 1x UR points.

My March 29th @ Starbucks using MPX did get 1x. So I did what I normally do, which is send a message thru Chase to see if they would fix it. I normally did use MPX bi weekly for the past few years to refill my starbucks card so I mentioned it in my letter that i did not receive 3x points around this time. Here is their reply.

Hello Fresh,

I will be happy to review your inquiry about the rewards
for your account.

I value you using our card for all your credit needs. I
see you have processed your transaction at MPX*Starbucks
Card. Let me share, different kiosks are assigned
different category codes. The category code for the kiosk
used by you has the merchant description of Miscellaneous
and Specialty Retail Stores. The rewards adjustment you
requested cannot be made because the merchant is not in an
eligible category.

Fresh, Visa and MasterCard systems assign a category
code to each merchant, based on the kinds of products and
services they sell. Sometimes the system places merchants
in a generalized category, like “superstores” instead of
“grocery stores” or “gas stations.” Since the merchant in
question was not assigned an appropriate category, your
purchases did not qualify for this reward.

We appreciate your business and thank you for being a
Chase customer.

Thank you,

Terry

the cashbacks websites are better to use anyway like mr rebates like staples gives 6 percent on many days. and

Dennis Maksymov

That has been a case for more than 2 weeks now. I believe they’ve fixed it at the same time as people started to blame Amex RATs for killing MPE. It looks like AMEX has nothing to do with that

So, if you use MPX on restaurants, your CSR will still code it as 1x UR point? That’s so lame.
