New Chase Southwest Offers – 30,000 Points + Companion Pass (Good Through 2019)

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Chase is offering new sign up bonuses on the personal versions of the Southwest card. Bonus is as follows 30,000 points + companion pass good through December 31st, 2019

Card Details

  • Chase 5/24 rule does apply to this card
  • Annual fees are not waived the first year
  • The Premier personal card earn a 6,000 points anniversary bonus; the Plus earns 3,000 points anniversary bonus; the Priority earns 7,500 anniversary bonus

Our Verdict

Normally the companion pass requires earning 110,000 points in a calendar year. The upside is that normally after earning those 110,000 points you get the companion pass for the rest of the remaining calendar year and the following calendar year. You can still get a sign up bonus of 60,000 points on these Southwest cards via referrals and it might still be possible to get 50,000 points after $2,000 in spend (yet to be confirmed). Personally I don’t think this new offer is that strong, if you can apply for two Southwest cards under the other offers you’ll either have enough Southwest points for a companion pass or almost enough. This is better in two ways:

  • You’d get the pass for most of 2019 and all of 2020
  • You’d end up with ~110,000 points to actually use on Southwest flights for you and your companion

I guess if you only have one 5/24 slot and can’t get approved for a business card and desperately want a companion pass then this is a good offer, otherwise I actually think it’s quite weak. This is a masterstroke of marketing though, I can already see the crazy headlines and card salesmen pushing this offer heavily. Keep in mind with this offer you’ll only have 30,000 Southwest points to play with.  If you’re not familiar with the companion pass, read this post first. As always if you have questions about Chase, read this post before asking them in the comments.

This is a good offer. Assuming that you always fly with a companion, this offer is equivalent to getting 60,000 Ultimate Rewards for $4000 spend. This beats the previous offer of 60,000 on $12,000 of spend. The downside of this offer is that the companion pass is only good through 2019 and not through 2020 like a regular companion pass.

And you wouldn’t be eligible for any SW personal bonus for 24 months

My wife got the SW Companion pass early 2018. Is the 24 months after she earned the bonus, or After you close the card? I closed the personal card, but kept the Biz version as they offered a $50 credit at retentions. Hoping that it is after earning the bonus so that I could close the second card, maybe wait a month, and reapply. Her report is pretty clean and under 5/24.

As I understand it, her companion pass would be good through Dec 31, 2019. That’s the remainder of the year in which she earned it + the following year

Sorry for not being clearer… I was asking about when could she reapply to get it again. 24 months after canceling the cards, or 24 months after receiving the bonus initially.

Chase is typically 24 months since receiving the bonus. Would also have to cancel the card before applying again, at least a few days (maybe a few weeks) before applying again.

Can I use the SW Companion Pass when I book/pay for SW flights with Citi ThankYouPoints?

Yes

You can use it paying with literally any method of payment. As long as the main flyer is paid via cash, Points etc. the Companion flies free (for $5.60 each way)

How many times can I change the companion? Is it still 3 times ?

Yes

They call it 3 but really they mean 3 different companions, 2 changes. For example your 1st companion is your wife, you change it to your child then back to your wife, that’s it no more changes.

Agree, not a great deal. However to my friends that think getting two credit cards will cause some grand catastrophe, I suppose some of them will like it.

My wife is not a US citizen and I don’t think she can get a business card (if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know), so this may be a good offer for her to do. She’s 3/24 with a CSP.

If she has a SSN, she can get a business card. My wife is a permanent resident and she has gotten them before.

It’s a little more complex than that. If you are a permanent resident or someone authorized to work for any employer you can apply for a business card. If you are on a work visa/authorized to work for only a single employer much more of a grey area. You aren’t technically allowed to own your own “business” though I’m not sure anyone would double check it could cause issues later(during naturalization or getting permanent residency for example).

Being LPR and having SSN is enough to get a business card

My wife isn’t either, but does have an SSN, she just 7 Chase business cards last year. We should start getting some personal cards for her, she’s at 2/24 as of this month 🙂

The card salesmen? Don’t you mean the card salesGuys? 🤣

TravelingTricks.com

This card is great for their targeted demo – folks NOT into Churning / flying for Free usually. Or if you’re Pregnant and and want to go on one last hurrah or two before going on a travel hiatus. (Yes, I know you can travel with kids)

i have a hard time convincing P2 that she “needs” another card, let alone two. But something like companion pass with a single card might seal the deal (I mean, i may have to add a trip to nassau or PR in the incentive, but it’s a win-win 🙂 )

This is an excellent offer for many folks. In particular, for folks that can not or will not do the 2 card thing. I know many that would never go through that process (we have done it twice). Simple. Clean. Easy.

My friend, not into churning, did the one card for companion pass for CA resident awhile ago. I think that was less than 24 months ago. Does that mean he’s not eligible or just not eligible for that specific card type. Can he apply for the Premier or Priority instead?

for personal CCs, no

T

Ah. Forgot the one personal cc per family rule.
But I guess he can still go with business card.
If he closed the personal card and assume it’s more than 24 months old, can he apply right away or he should wait a month for the card to show CLOSED on the credit bureau?

Mark Ostermann

I think it is a great offer for families not in the “game”, people who can’t get business cards, people who can’t hit the new high spending thresholds on the personal offers, or if you have a 2 player system where one grabs this now and the other does the 24 month plan at the end of the year.

I will have my parents get this for sure since they are not interested in multiple cards.

How do I get the sign up rewards if I have an existing card (opened years ago)?

Rowan

I usually try to avoid being one of those who bemoans the increase in the number of people involved in the game, particularly since I’m not exactly an old-timer myself, but is anyone else concerned about that the likely influx of Companion Pass-holders from this offer may hasten the dilution of the program?

While I agree it’s not a particularly strong offer from our perspective, it removes a fair amount of friction that’s typically been involved in achieving CP status… Or maybe I’m just hyper-sensitive to it since I’m just about a week away from hitting P2’s first 110k! lol

Sarah N
Sarah N

I had the same worry. I want to wait til 2020 to get a CP, and I wonder what effect this might have on the program overall.

Maybe not a good deal for churners, but an excellent deal for those who want to maximize their return for the least amount of effort – particular if you have a Sapphire card.

Personally I agree if I were under 5/24 I’d still do the two cards for 110k, but for most normal people that don’t fly several times a year, get two weeks PTO, and couldn’t burn 110k if they tried – this is an excellent deal for them (especially with a Sapphire), which is why I’m recommending it to my friends/family looking for an easy opportunity that will last all yaer.

What is the significance of having a Sapphire card ?
