[Expired] New Merrill+ Link (50,000 Merrill Points / $3,000 Spending, $500-$1,000)

Update: this is now expired; the application link was taken down around 5 PM on March 31.

We have covered the Merrill+ extensively here, so I won’t go into detail about the offer again. If you would like to read more about this offer, please consult our original article about the offer and a followup article about the offer. If you would like to read a review of the card, you can view that here, and a guide to maximizing Merrill points by redeeming for flights can be found here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer. Nota bene: reddit user polisk confirmed this link will submit an application, but reddit user brainvictim ran into the usual problem of the application erroring out. You may need to try in multiple browsers, in incognito mode, or other options (such as sharing or not sharing your information with Merrill Lynch). YMMV.

  • Earn 50,000 points after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 90 days.

Our Verdict

There’s a reason we’ve covered this bonus an absurd number of times–it’s really, really good, and a new online link was highly anticipated. As a reminder, applications almost universally go to pending at first, so I would wait one business day before calling in to reconsideration. Within a few hours you should be able to review your application status online at this link.

Before applying, please read one of our other articles about this offer, as well as things everybody should know about Bank of America credit cards. Remember that you do not need a relationship with Merrill to get this card, Bank of America does combine hard pulls, and Bank of America may use an existing credit file to evaluate your application.

Do take appropriate caution if you have many Bank of America credit cards open, as Bank of America has been closing the cards of some customers if they have more than four. You may find it difficult to be approved if you have 6 Bank of America credit cards, or you may find it a breeze. YMMV.

Any thoughts on applying for this card again? As in…. I opened one in January, would it be worth the hard pull to try and get the bonus again?

James
James

Won’t your application be declined in this case if you already have the exact same card?

Kyle
Kyle

Not sure, that’s why I ask. Considering people have had multiple Alaska cards I think there is hope. Couple DPs on reddit showing two Merrill+ cards for the same person.

This is an amazing card, especially the design. Not only do you get 0% on BT’s for 12 months within 30 days of activation….BOA tends to give generous credit lines.

only downside I have noticed is the points do not crossover with other ML products (biz version), and also flight availability in their portal is slightly different than what is public (but this happens with other cards too even non BOA)….

regardless i am glad I got this, and will probably just do the $9xx alaska balance trick in the end.

I had to move 5000 from another cc to get this approved while at the time my total CL with BOA was like 10000.

Can you tell us more about “$9xx alaska balance trick”

jf
jf

book two alaska flights that are as close to 500 as possible and cancel and it goes is your alaska balance

i will say flights fluctuate daily on this card, and its strange because i have seen flights available on here not on amex, and vice versa.

“it goes is your alaska balance” you wanna say we will get cashback/refund?? thx

Jf

After certain time idk you get refunded to Alaska account in cash balance. Does not refund to cc.

oh, =( so no way to get more than $500 cash back? so why you do this trick then? thx

Interesting quirk here: It’s actually $500-$1,010. If you search for flights, it doesn’t actually start the count above 25,000 points until you hit $505.

Not sure why that is, but all the better right?

Robb
Robb

This is the main drawing point of this bonus, and has been known for a while.

E Dantes
E Dantes

Robb — Yeah, totally. The point I was making that it’s actually $505 instead of $500 for maximum return, so there’s even an extra $10 you can get to book $1,010 instead of just $1,000 in flights. Not going to break the bank, obviously, but an interesting quirk if you only have 25,000 points left and the flight brushes just over $500. You see what I mean?

What’s the consensus on having a Merrill+ already opened? Should I close my existing Merrill+ card before opening another one?

AK

If you close it with unused ML points, will you lose them?

Should i call them or wait?

I got that message too, I would wait and check your status later today or tomorrow.

Where do i check the status?

Status check #1-866-295-5137

I would wait a day or two and if you have a Bank of America account you can check there as it will show under your account (if approved)

Just wait. I had the same thing happen on Saturday. By Monday I was approved.

What’s the best BOA cc to apply for right now to combine HP?

Dave C

Any confirmation the BAABZX is no good? I applied over the phone on Monday with that one. New offer is BAABZY.

MarcoPolo

Thanks DoC
I applied over the phone yesterday.
I should have waited one day as I’m more comfortable applying online since that allows me to take screenshots for review later (if needed).
Now all I need is Chase Sapphire Reserve 100,000 points offer to come back!

William Charles

Well when you find that offer, please let us know. If you could also find a link that doesn’t take 5/24 into account that would be awesome. It’s good to dream, right!?

MarcoPolo
MarcoPolo

You’re right.
I dream’t of this card offer coming back and it did.
So, you never know 🙂

MarcoPolo
MarcoPolo

Wow, that was quick.
I applied yesterday over the phone and this morning the card was in my BoA account with a credit line of 12,000 and 0.00% promotional APR until Apr 2018 on balance transfer.

If I want to apply Alaska to combine pulls, wouldn’t it make sense to apply for that first, recon it, and then apply for Merrill?

How sensitive is BOA to credit inquiries?

Jerry M

Apart from the signup bonus, this card does is really not that good unless people want to close after getting the bonus. Also please read the T/C, this bonus might be reported as interest on 1099 form. Not sure if anyone has actually got 1099 for this card?

“The value of this reward may constitute taxable income to you. You may be issued an Internal Revenue Service Form 1099 (or other appropriate form) that reflects the value of such reward. Please consult your tax advisor, as neither we, nor our affiliates, provide tax advice.”

Just called recon and was told they can’t approve me because they extended me enough credit. Have 2 cards, Alaska and M+ already, 5k each. If I lower my credit limit or close out Alaska, how long I should wait call recon again?

Any good personal cards to combine with this?

A second Merrill+ card!

Chuck

Just applied now. Thanks Sirtheta for finding the online application!

William Charles

First the Wells Fargo $250 bonus and now this!? Or is this your second card?

Chuck

LOL, this is first. I guess I was trying to do less cards for 5/24, and now I basically gave up on that.

William Charles

So many ways to get around 5/24 (well two) not worth planning around I don’t think! Glad to hear you gave up on it

I find it fascinating that DoC writers are not among the most prolific churners in the trade. Will, you really do need to setup an intervention for them. Maybe they are jaded from all the point devaluations. 😀

William Charles

Haha, I think you’d be surprised at some of the deals they hit hard in private.

Dan

Just curious if it has been tried. Use 25k points to purchase a $500 flight, cancel flight under airline’s 24 hour provision (all airlines have this). Would the refund be in the form of 25k points or $500 statement credit?

Matt
Matt

Dan, I would be interested in answer as well. I applied this morning via the new link. Went to pending called and shuffled around some credit and was approved. Also applied for Alaska card after approved for the Merril card but was denied stating to much credit line already. Is it worth calling in a second time to have that app reviewed or once it is denied it is set in stone?
