Our Verdict

If you buy a $200 Mastercard gift card and a $100 Mastercard gift card, the total will come out to $297.90; or buy two $200 Mastercard gift cards for a total of $398.90. These deals are made better when you use a card that earns at a high rate at office supply stores. There’s also a Chase Offer for 10% back. Also, Dosh offers 2% back, though they exclude gift cards in the terms.

I had no problem splitting the payment between two CHASE cards. But, ironically, I only got one “You used one of your CHASE Offers” email though the offer was on both accounts. And I also tried scanning the PayPal barcode to stack an additional 5% on the Freedom card with the offer. But the Office Depot cashier couldn’t get the pay by scan to work. I’ll hopefully get 2 $8 credits and will consider 4% back on the purchase from the offers plus the points earned a good day:

Just wanted to comment that I did receive DOSH credit today from the Office Depot MC GC purchase yesterday.

When was the last time you successfully used the PayPal QR code in the Office Depot physical store? PayPal has a very short list and Office Depot is not on it. You can use PayPal online but not in-store. CVS, Walmart, Target, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Dollar General, Macy’s, Amazon Go/Whole Foods, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Zippin are on the list. CVS was the first to accept.

I’ve used it online and *hoped* OD would accept it in the store as well. It never hurts to try, I would assume PayPal will add in-store acceptance over time, especially with vendors who already process their payments online. Consoled myself anyway with the “almost” free Panda Express dinner thanks to PayPal.

Glad it is Mastercard this time, easier for me to use organically since some self-checkouts like Walmart will allow me to use up the end of the card and then ask for another mode of payment. Visa seems to always get declined if I have insufficient funds on the card and I have to have a cashier do it manually.

I didn’t know that Visas were the problem. So you are saying at WM self-checkouts that if you use a MCGC then it will automatically deduct the difference unlike Visas?

I cannot guarantee that it will work at all Walmarts if some stores use different systems but from my experience if I use Mastercard prepaids at the self-checkout I can use them up at the end and it will then automatically prompt for additional payment. You could even use up multiple on the same purchase kind of like with gift cards. But with Visa it always gets declined for me at the end at the self-checkouts if I go over the remaining balance. One way to use up the Visa at the self-checkout is to just buy a gift card with exactly the remaining balance entered onto it, the only condition there is the minimum to add to a Walmart gift card at self-check out is $5.00. The minimum may be different at other stores (although I think Target may be $5.00 too), but for walmart as long as you have $5.00+ left on the visa then you can just purchase a gift card at the self-checkout and then do proceed separately with your full purchase using he gift card and then it will prompt you the remainder. Walmart gift cards are also refillable at self-checkouts so you can even keep using the same physical gift card if you want.

Will likely trigger both Dosh and Payce passive linked card in store discounts as well. Worked for me on other gc purchases.

i’d advise against buying GC from a store that gives Amex L3 data when working on an SUB, if indeed you don’t want RAT problems ASAP

You don’t want to buy gift cards while working on a SUB; Amex will get you 100%. Or they might get you after six months. But clearly they closely at spending for SUB.

After that, it is pretty okay.

I’m working on a Amex Hilton promo to spend 8k for one free night. Will MC purchase at OD be okay for this?

Does anyone know if Office Depot allows split payments? I have 10%/$8 on two different cards and I’d like to use both of them on one transaction if possible.

yes, system allowed it. But I had one negative DP that the cashier wont allow me to do it in one store. All other store allowed it.

I was told today by a CSR (who asked a manager) that if they try to split the payment, that the transaction would be flagged for fraud. That seems to be not true, according to comments here.

I had 4 Chase offers and was able to split b/w 5 cards no problem at one store. Another store cashier said it wasn’t possible, I politely said I had done it before. She phoned manager and he told her how to do it, use 2 cards. See the “Payments Workshop” at top under “Knowledge Base” for more info.
