The Offer
- Receive an in store discount of $20 when you purchase $300 or more in Visa or Mastercard gift cards from Office Max stores
The Fine Print
- Official limit of two offers per household/business. Although not all stores enforce this.
- Valid from December 14th till December 27th
- Offer only available at Office Max stores, Office Depot is not running this offer
- Activation fees are $6.95 on the $200 cards
Maximizing The Deal
There are two ways to maximize this deal, we’ve looked at both of them below and shown you what type of profit you can make.
American Express Sync Offer
There is an American Express sync offer that gives you a $10 statement credit when you purchase $50 or more. Because you can split tender on up to six cards the best way of maximizing this deal would be to use six cards enrolled in that offer.
- Purchase two $200 gift cards, pay $13.90 in fees
- Receive $20 instant discount
- Use six different American Express cards enrolled in the Office Max promotion and receive $10 statement credit per card (+$60)
- Earn rewards points on all six cards (~393 in rewards points)
In total you’d make $66.1 using this method + the rewards points. You could make a little more by just purchasing a $100 and $200 giftcard or by using more enrolled cards as well. The main problem with this is not all cashiers are OK with you split tendering so many different cards, especially on a gift card purchase.
Office Supply Store Bonus Category
There are a number of different credit cards that earn 5x or 5% cash back at office supply store. Here is what this deal looks like if you use one of those:
- Purchase two $200 gift cards, pay $13.90 in fees
- Receive $20 instant discount
- Use a credit card that earns 5% cash back on office supply stores for your $393.9 purchase (+$19.695)
You’d profit $25.795, remember that you can do this twice so you’d actually make $51.59. I usually find I can get the deal way more than the official limit, remember to smile and be polite.
Our Verdict
This is a good profitable deal as long as you have an Office Max nearby and are able to unload the giftcards without too much hassle. Even if you just wanted to meet a minimum spend requirement, this deal would be a good option as you’re getting gift cards for better than free. You can view more giftcard deals here.
Hat tip to Frequent Miler Via twitter user @Somempire
I got 12 x $200 Visas. I had them ring them up 4 per transaction, so $40 discount. $800 gift card net was $787.20. Manager was willing to give me as many as I wanted but we decided to ring up 4 at a time.
Discover card has 5% off department stores, would this qualify?
This deal is not at Every OM. Visited an OM in Seattle today, and they could not find the deal in the circular, nor in the in-store coupon scan list.
Note: Sometimes, but not always, OfficeMax takes the discount off the fee only. So you end up paying $300 even for $300 in gift cards for example.
It’s two $20 discounts per household/business. I already used my Amex sync offer and don’t have a office supply category card, so I got three $200 cards and got $19.15 in profit and 581 Amex points
Cool
Thanks for the reply. Your blog provides a lot of good content.
Is there a resource outlining the use of Metabank gift cards for MS? I haven’t yet learned the ropes of MS using gift cards, I know that some can be loaded to Serve, and others can be used for MO at Walmart.
Do you know if this is nationwide? I can’t find this deal in any local advertisements.
I don’t think it’s in any of the local advertisements, you should see it near the gift rack. I haven’t heard of any office max stores not having this deal, but office depot doesn’t have it which is why it’s not in the local advertisements.
per OM cashier in HNL, not available this is not in the system 🙁
Grrrr. It’s always office max and not depot, but the depots are the ones convenient to me 🙁
You know that feeling where you just go to Office Max to buy some necessary office supplies (surge protector, Netgear wireless USB adapter, and Post It Notes) and then get home and read this post… 🙁
Haha, rule #1 of Office Max – always check the gift card rack for promotions. That sucks, on the bright side at least the deal is good enough to warrant going back.
