PSA: Chase Is Matching To 80,000 IHG Offer – But It’s Slightly Different

Earlier in November we posted that some people were struggling to get matched to the Chase IHG 80,000 offer (see below). It turns out that it is still possible to get matched to this offer, but it requires $2,000 in spend instead of the $1,000 previously needed. People that tried to get matched to the 80,000 point offer with only $1,000 have been the ones being denied. Glad to see this is still around!

Update: Please read the comments, it looks like you can still get matched but the new offer requires $2,000 in spend instead of $1,000.

It’s been possible to sign up for the Chase IHG offer with a 60,000 point bonus and then ask to be matched to this 80,000 point bonus for awhile now (although you wouldn’t get the $50 statement credit), simply by sending a secured message. Reader JCM commented to let us know that he was denied for his match, I asked on Twitter and had another confirmation on denial for getting matched.

I don’t want to say that this is 100% dead as we only have two data points, but I did want to give people a quick warning. If you’ve asked to be matched on or after November 1st, 2016 then please let us know your results in the comments below. Hopefully these are just isolated cases and matching is working just fine.

  1. Dave C says:

The wife and I both have IHG, both for >24 months. I’m just waiting for the 80k offer to come back around, at which point I’ll downgrade to IHG regular, apply for 80k. I’m thinking it’ll come back around early next year, but that’s just a hunch.

    • Moose Cow says:

      Doesn’t downgrading reset the clock?

      • Bodiddely says:

Not with Chase; there’s speculation that it might with Citi. Standard Chase restriction is: “This product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of this credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of this credit card who received a new cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months.”

  2. Bodiddely says:

I was approved and matched to 80k offer on 10/31 on first request. A reddit user with whom I corresponded on the 1st was initially denied but requested again and was matched successfully.

  3. FakeSnake says:

    Denied on 10/17:

Thank you for contacting Chase about the enrollment bonus
on your IHG® Rewards Club credit card account.

I regret to inform you that we are not matching the 80,000
bonus points offer. Although we appreciate your loyalty,
we ask that you trust that this decision is the same for
all members. We feel that adhering to the same policy for
all members outside of this designated time frame is the
best way to remain fair and consistent.

If you need any other assistance, you can send us a secure
message. We appreciate your business and thank you for
    choosing Chase.

  4. Curmudgeon says:

I sent in my request earlier today. Got a response in less than two hours from Chase:

“After a review of the promotional offer you are
requesting, I can confirm this offer expired on 9/30/16.
As a result we are unable to match the offer.

We do have a new offer with a 80,000 bonus points after
you spend $2,000 in the first 3 months from account
opening. Once the $2,000 spending requirement has been met
within the required timeframe, reply to this email and we
will be happy to match the 80,000 bonus points.”

I won’t have any problem spending the extra amount and 20k points for $1000 seems like a good deal to me.

  5. Fellow Churner says:

Here’s another DP. The CSR apparently was willing to match, but I am outside of the 90-day period where Chase will match. (My 70k sign-up bonus just posted, but they must start the 90-day match period when you apply.)

“Thank you for contacting Chase about the enrollment bonus
on your IHG® Rewards Club Select credit card account.

I understand your concerns regarding the spending
requirements to receive the enrollment bonus. After a
review of the account and email history for this matter, I
can confirm you requested a match to another promotion
that is available. We do allow for a 90 day timeframe to
upgrade the enrollment bonus from the account opening
date. I can confirm the 90 day timeframe expired on
9/27/16; therefore, we are unable to make any adjustments
    to your account.

We appreciate the opportunity to help you. We value our
relationship with you and thank you for choosing Chase.
Please contact us anytime if you need assistance.”

  6. Matt P says:

They matched me last night. The other DP’s probably asked for the old one. I just asked for 80k with no proof of the offer and they said it was expired for the same spend as my 60k offer, but they would refund that and give me 20k after I hit the $2k if I want.

  7. zMay says:

This is what I got fighting to get matched to the 80K offer:

“…As previously explained, the enrollment bonus you enrolled
with allows you to earn 60,000 points after the first
$1,000.00 in spending within the first three months the
account is open, a $50.00 statement credit after first
purchase, and 5,000 points after adding an authorized user
    within the first three months.

We want to explain both the offer you applied with and the
offer for a $50.00 statement credit and 80,000 Reward
Point offer are only available when applying for instant
credit while booking an IHG hotel reservation online.
These offers are not transferable and cannot be matched.
While we certainly can appreciate your request, the
specific reservation path to apply for the specific offer
of 80,000 bonus points and a $50.00 statement credit was
not used. As a result, we are unable to honor this offer.

As promised, we?re pleased to be able to match another
enrollment offer to receive 80,000 points. This offer does
not include a statement credit. If you wish to have the
$50.00 statement credit re-billed to the account, we would
then be able to add the additional 20,000 reward points to
    match the 80,000 reward point?s offer….”

What are Your thoughts? Should I accept this?

    Thank You

    • Nick says:

This is typical for them to clawback the $50 when granting the 20,000 extra points. It depends how much you value the points, but 20,000 points for $50 is a no brainer for most people. I’d recommend going for it!

  8. Alex T says:

I was also able to get matched for the 80,000/$2000 spend offer. They asked me to email them back when I have spent the $2000. Seems like they are still matching!

  9. jcm says:

Update: I SMed again, this time asked for any 80K offer. They offered me the 80K with 2000 spend and no statement credit, so that’s what I’ll be doing.

  10. Curmudgeon says:

Update: I met my extra $1k spend a few days ago and sent an IM requesting the extra points. Got an IM a few hours later saying the extra 20k points was approved and will show up on my next statement.

    Thanks DoC!

  11. zMay says:

I’ve just met the $1000 requirement and sent a msg to chase, this is the replays:

“Thank you for contacting Chase about the enrollment offer
on your IHG® Rewards Club Select credit card account.

As you requested, I have reversed the $50.00 statement
credit and added 20,000 reward points to the account to
match the 80,000 point offer. You will see these
adjustments on the next billing statement.”

Note: Ive sent them a msg requesting match a month ago (before they set the spending req. to $2000)

  12. Thiseye says:

My 90 days was almost up, so I didn’t want to risk it, but via SM, they said they’d match it, but I’d need to pay back the $50 credit that posted and meet the $2k spend requirement to get the additional 20k. But I also attached an email I received literally the day after I applied that contained the 80k offer.

    • zMay says:

I dont think there is a way around paying back the $50 in exchange of 20k points. I know since I was in that boat too. I tried couple of messages + call. But the only thing that concerns me is, since you are saying 90 days are almost up, why are they asking you to meet the 2k spend requirement? That requirement came along like 2 weeks ago. (scroll up and look for my comments ). This Monday (2k spend already implemented) I’ve replayed them on the msg they’ve sent me on Nov the 3rd authorizing the $50 re-bill in exchange for 20k points and they have approved it without asking me for additional spending (i.e 2k)

  13. Bob says:

I am looking to get the Chase IHG card. Is Chase still offering the 80,000 points upgrade?

  14. Sara Bradley says:

Used this offer in spring of 2015. Got 75,000 points after 1000$spend (actually thought at the time this equated to 750$ cash back ><).

FYI, this can equate to ~120-150$ cash back if redeemable as walmart (or insert your store) gift cards available on their rewards site. Can get 175$ worth of cards with 75k points (3×50$ and 1×25$). These I then sold on ebay (-10% fee), for +/-10% of their net value, sometimes over.

  15. J T says:

My spouse was approved for the IHG card with 60k (5k) + $50 credit / $1k spend on 8/31/16. I had forgotten to follow up about a bonus match until this month (January ’17). I sent a SM for a match to 80k, referencing a nonspecific 80k offer I “happened to see shortly after applying” for 60k offer. I didn’t expect a favorable reply 4+ months after approval, but the SM response was for an additional 20k after another $1k spend and re-billing the $50 statement credit, to match the “current” offer. Only had to accept the terms by SM and a follow up SM when the spending was met a few days later. Credit charged immediately and bonus match posted with the next statement.

TL;DR Matching still seems to be valid, if you’re willing to meet additional spending and forego the statement credit, even well beyond the initial 90 day spend/bonus period.

  16. ag says:

I got this card on 1/12/2017. I applied for the 60k points and $50 statement credit after 1k spend. I SM’d to match for 80k points and $50 statement credit and they were happy to match after meeting a minimum 2k spend. I was even able to keep the $50 statement credit

  17. Bill S says:

I have been waiting for the 80k offer to come back. I just came across this post. I wish I would have seen it sooner. Has anyone applied recently for the 60k offer and gotten Chase to increase it to 80k? I’m trying to decide if I should try this now or keep waiting for the 80k to come back. I have a trip this summer that 80k points would really help with.

    • ag says:

I was matched about a month ago. It was fairly painless to SM for the match. If you have a trip comming up this summer I wouldn’t wait. IHG award availability can run out pretty quickly and the points take at least one statement period to post

    • I’d just go for it, people typically only post if something stops working

      • Bill S says:

Just applied/approved. When do you suggest SMing them to ask for the 80k match? After I meet the $1k spend, or after I start spending on the card?

        • Bill S says:

I received my card last week and put a little spend on it. Today I SM’d them and asked if I could switch to the 80k offer. They were able to switch me to that offer, but I have to spend $2k and I lose the $50 credit. I’m happy with that.

  18. Guru says:

I got an offer for 80,000 bonus if you call in IHG Customer care directly, The MS was 2000$ and no 50$ credit ,Think it is a public offer as i just had created my IHG Rewards account 2 weeks back. i applied over the phone when i heard this offer but my application went into pending , hope it gets approved will update when it does.

PS very informative Blog, , any new info i read it first on Dr. of Credit 🙂

  19. Peter says:

I recently got an email from IHG offering 80,000 points after $2k spend and no credit statement. I just sent Chase an SM to see if they can match.

  20. Moe says:

I sent Chase an SM this morning asking if they would match the 80k and $2k spend and they did.

  21. Jian says:

In response to Guru calling in I also called to ask for the 80K/$2K spend offer, they did indeed have that offer, however the lady mentioned that there was no anniversary free night attached to that offer 🙁 I might call in again to check if something different shows up but seems like YMMW

    • I think the anniversary night is attached to all offers on this card, it’s a standard benefit.

      • Jian says:

You’re 100% right, first rep must have been confused. I called again and was offered 80K + free anniversary night and AF waived first year for $2K spend. Managed to talk to 4 people (!) before getting approved. 1st person IHG, 2nd person Chase, 3rd person Chase further verification and decline (I’m at 15/24 with 2 Chase cards CSR & CFU), 4th person review and reconsideration. 4th person asked tough questions such as why I had so many recent apps, I talked about building credit history, budgetting between different types of spend and wanting a hotel card for travel purpose. None of that helped, finally scored the approval by moving credit from my CSR. Hope that helps as a data point!

  22. Dani Lynn says:

Is it too late to ask for a match in 4/17?

    • DMK says:

Just asked on 4/30 through a secure message and got the 80k offer. This is still available

      • AC says:

Do you mean you applied first under the 60k offer, and got them to match the 80k offer? Or you messaged them even before applying (in which case how do you do that?)

      • AC says:

Did you apply first and then asked for a match to the 80k offer? Or did you do the SM first (though not sure how you could do that?)

        • DMK says:

Yes I applied first and then asked for a match by SM. Say you “came across an 80k point offer after applying”.

  23. Gary says:

DP: Wife and I each got this card last week, sent SM for each card and they are still matching to 80k after $2k spend

  24. life_is_to_live says:

I got an email with 80000 points after 2K spend but AF is not waived.. is that a good deal? or can I go through the option mentioned above – sign up for 60K points with AF waived and have that matched with 80,000 points.. AF was not discussed on the post or on the comments.

  25. Adam D says:

Applied, prob at 15/24, got 30 day wait, appeared in my account 2 days later, SM’d request to match at 80k and no annual fee. this is the response, not sure yet about annual fee being waived or not, will report back.

“We reviewed your credit card account and found that the
offer you requested was 80,000 bonus points after you
spend $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months your
account is open. We are pleased to extend this offer to
    your account.
please meet the spending requirement of $2,000.
After you have met the required spend, please reply to
this email to claim the offer.
You’ll be eligible as long as:
    – You have not received a new cardmember bonus for this
card in the past 24 months.
    – Your account is open and not in default when we post the
    – Your eligible purchases do not include balance
transfers, cash advances, and cash-like charges such as
traveler’s checks, foreign currency, and money orders, any
checks that access your account, overdraft advances,
interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, or fees of
any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable”

  26. john firth says:

On the phone with CS and they say yesterday, they changed the offers and now there is a 100k offer available. I asked for the $50 statement credit but that was a no go. No code, just over the phone.

    • James Hendrick says:

Interesting, is this a targeted offer or public offer that is only available only over the phone? I know they have offered 100k targeted in the past, but would not match to public offers….. was going to apply for this today but want to get this question answered first…
