Our Verdict
As far as I know no cards earn a category bonus at Simon Mall. But still useful for cards that earn at a high rate on all purchases or for meeting minimum spend requirements. Probably a good idea to avoid using an American Express card though.
Hat tip to reader Aniruddha P
Just confirmed it’s working at Chicago Premium Outlets – took $1 off per card at the end of the transaction.
Was told 2.95 was for cash purchase only, and a posted sign displayed this too
just an FYI that depending on the Simon, they may keep a log and refuse to sell it to you if you go there often. I go to a very high-volume center and have been denied. When I started being a frequent customer there, they often had me sign a form that stated it was for personal use. YMMV
I am at a simon location in California e the CSR told me that 2.95 fee is only if I pay cash. So I would say it is YMMV.
I was told the same at Lenox Mall in Atlanta GA. $2.95 only if cash payment.
Was at the Lenox Mall as well but was told that is for corporate account only (consumer account here) – no mention about cash only.
No go in my local mall either, was told it’s for corporate account only. Talked to two different staffs and got the same answer. Said their manager specifically told them so as several customers ahead of me had asked about this promotion. lol
My Simon had a sign it was for cash only, but when I asked, Manager said credit cards are included.
Could I venture a question I should know the answer to, perhaps?
“Probably a good idea to avoid using an American Express card though.”
Why would that be? Thank you.
Simon Mall has not been posting to Amex for signup bonuses. On the other hand, for regular spend, it seems to be fine, but maybe people want to avoid the dreaded Financial Review or the Rewards Abuse Team.
Agreed. But there are some reports, including mine, where non bonus points were taken away. They even could see where my past points went. Thousands of dollars into their own just Give charity program, but it wasn’t much of a discussion. There were those at Amex who felt that team had gone too far and they never looked upon them the same. Such a shame. I no longer use MR branded cards for any spending., but moved my regular spending to Chase.
At my location (very MS friendly), there are flyers on the CS desk advertising the deal. When I got some this morning, the marketing supervisor for the mall was at the desk. She asked me where I had heard about the deal, I told her that I saw it on DoC.
This is why we can’t have nice things. Blabbing needlessly that the blogs are advertising the promotion helps nobody. Only makes Simon employees want to tell corporate that the promotion is getting out of hand.
@BB — “promotion is getting out of hand” –You don’t know how the business world works. If Simon has gone to the trouble of creating a promo discount, you can bet that they expect increased volume, and will track accordingly. If you are a property-level manager being evaluated, you want all the volume you can get. In this case, publicity is good.
+1
@tuphat “You don’t know how the business world works.” My career suggests otherwise, but business acumen is irrelevant to the discussion. That’s cute you were chatty with a female employee, but what positive does it bring to point out that DoC informed you of promotion? Only negatives can come out from blabbing about MS. There are no positives. Fact.
@BB — You are simply wrong. Politely & succinctly explaining what I’m doing (“getting FF miles”), if asked, is what keeps the wheels spinning at a MS-friendly places like the Simon mall I visit. I would imagine they would have a different reaction to “mind your own business” types of responses. I agree there’s no reason to go into detail, but you are wrong on the absence of upside.
Why did you use the words “cute…chatty…female employee”..demeaning both the OP and the marketing supervisor? Would you use those words if it were a man? And are you assuming that the OP is a man?
While I disagree with the manner in which this is stated – I agree with the general premise. There is no argument that bringing a spotlight on to the hobby is almost always bad news. Just think if there was some advanced knowledge with them – none of the amazing Simon deals of last year would have been possible! Honestly many of us sign the sheet that says “budget tool” so yea there was literally no reason to open your mouth. Saying its for FF miles is one thing but pointing to the blog – come on man. OP wanted to be chatty with the rep to stroke his own ego – look at how clever I am Simon Rep with all my credit cards and how easy it is for me! Its the same ego that will prevent him from admitting his mistake here as he will continue to defend his actions as part of his overwhelming “business/marketing acumen” despite all the while being in a deluded haze of blissful and wanton ignorance.
Probably shouldn’t tell you this either, but — I’m on pretty good terms (frequent customer) with the folks that run the Simon corporate card function (order online, delivered by mail). They also pump up the volume with periodic promos, both publicized and non-publicized. They know exactly what they are doing, down to the fact that they are filling a market vacuum. So, personally, I don’t mind providing a little positive feedback, as opposed to being a deebagg. Peace out.
But your comments on here sure make you sound like a dbagg… Check your ego at the door.
Just did this an hour ago. You have to ask for this and/ or remind the csr to apply the promo. Easy peasy.
33% discount! Wow, OMG!
Oh, wait, they had a 100% discount last year. I’ll pass.
Last year they had an awesome deal on AmEx gcs, plus they had Visa FBs that you could use at many places like CVS. If this is all they doing this holiday, it’s completely lame.
Same here. I was holding breath for no-fee VGC deals. I’m hoping Macerich does something better than this.
Simon wouldn’t want you any way b/c you’re a D!
Hahahaha
You’re so awesome
Was just there a few hours ago and checking my receipt I was charged $3.95 per card. Will have to go back tomorrow and see if i can get some more at the discounted rate.
Check your receipt. I thought the same thing, because $3.95 shows up for each card, but there’s a line just before total that takes the discount off (in my case, $12.00), says something like “Corporate Funded Promotion.”
Has anyone reported problems with Amex if you buy the cards to earn points rather than buying them to meet spending requirements?
Put over 20K on my HHS last month and got the points.
I had points taken away that were not for meeting spend requirement and was a longtime cardholder. I was donating all points through their own charity program, but they didn’t care.
Amex RAT = charity Scrooge.
