[Expired] Staples: $100 Mastercard With No Fees (Limit Of 3)

Deal has expired, view more Staples deals here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Staples is selling $100 Mastercard gift cards with no activation fee (normal $6.95)

The Fine Print

  • While Supplies Last.
  • Offer Expires On 08/25/2018

Our Verdict

Deal is really only useful if you have a card that earns at a high rate on office supply stores. You might also be able to take advantage of the following deals:

There is also a retailmenot offer that excludes gift card purchases, but it has been working on those purchases anyway. The limit of 3 is applied at the order level rather than the account level, but I’d recommend against making multiple orders to bypass this limit (from memory it just leads to all of your orders being cancelled).

I am guessing this works in-store as well?

Dylan

Staples website mentions online only so i wouldnt think so.

Hmm odd, I see that too but they do sell MCGCs at my store. Maybe try my luck later today.

Celia
Celia

Mine seems MCGC ones as well but not this kind. The description says the item isn’t available in store.

Just ordered 2 of these cards online. Was not able to split the payment to multiple credit cards though. Didn’t bother to make a Staples profile and just did it as a Guest so that may be the reason.

Are you normally able to split payment on staples website?

Is anyone able to split payment at walgreens?

If this works at stores they wouldn’t be able to enforce 300 limit.

Is this safe to purchase for Amex To reach MSR or will Staples send Level 3 data to Amex?

Tom

No, it’s not safe.

I know Amex is very strict but how about using a Chase credit card to reach spending requirement for signup bonus?

Chaser123

I put 3 orders in last time around (a few weeks ago) with no issue. FYI – These cards are a bit of pain to liquidate through Ptiq MP promo, but fee free on purchase and liquidation.

What was the issue with Plastiq and these cards?

There’s no issue. It’s just a hassle.

Any idea which will apply if your Amex has BOTH the 10% Back at Office Supply Retailers AND $5 off $25 Staples offers?

Chris C
Chris C

The $5 off $25 shouldn’t apply because that one is in-store only. The 10% off should work fine.

Tom
Tom

If you meet requirements for both, both will apply.

5 off 25 is in store only

Bala

The amex 5 off 25 is in store only for me.

Mike

$5 off $25 is in-store only. Ordered a $50 3rd party gift card online a couple weeks ago and only the 10% back hit my statement.

Please note that a ton of people (reported in slickdeals )had issues activating these cards from staples online last time

Saw this on another site…hope it helps. just call 1-877-426-2551 which is the GiftCardMall customer line to activate these cards. Took just 5 minutes. Be prepared to give them the Staples order number, verify your billing/shipping address, your name, email address for survey after the call and cards will be activated.

Before reading the comment below, I tried calling the number on the back of the gift card, tried calling and chatting with Staples and got the typical run around.

What are the most common problems associated with Mastercard gift cards issued by US Bank?

I’ve read that fraud had been a big issue with this issuer but not certain if they have cleaned that up. Maybe others can update.

Jason Smith

These cards are mailed to you, so they come with a separate activation code which must be used to activate the cards before use. So you can hold off on activating the cards until you are ready to use them and not have to worry about the fraud.

Funny thing is that “fraud prevention measure” aka activation code can backfire very badly on buyers.

My activation code never arrived, and MC’s activation dept wanted me to fax in a laundry list of items (receipt, proof of ID, proof of address etc) before they would activate, and told me it could “take up to THREE WEEKS to verify everything”. Even they suggested having Staples send them proof of purchase instead because it would take forever otherwise.

And of course none of the CSRs at Staples I called knew what I was talking about. Finally a fed-up CSR transferred me to the office of the president, but ironically this was the actual solution, since a very helpful executive assistant helped resolve this within 20 minutes.

Teebee
Teebee

Oh no I hope this isn’t what I have to look forward to. I was never sent an activation code, called to have it set up, someone in India told me “to wait a few hours” before registering, and now it doesn’t register at all and sometimes shows a “page does not exist” message when I enter the card number.

Krista

I have not personally experienced fraud recently but I very much doubt they’ve cleaned it up. The cards I have purchased recently still have very similar numbers from each other. Makes them very easy to be hacked.

Still, Not that big of a concern if liquidating quickly. (They can only hack from the time that the balance goes on the card until it’s liquidated.)

Unfortunately, recent reports have surfaced in which the buyer said his new MC cards were drained within about an hour of activation, same day as purchased, but that was in-store. Not sure about these. I’ll pass and let others have the fun. I have no time for problems.

Celia

I took advantage of that last Staples/MC offer a couple weeks ago. Just used the card for the first time yesterday. No issue. I did make sure to pick cards that didn’t have the back taken off if that makes any difference.

I intended to use it right away because of the reports and then didn’t.

The Retailmenot Staples online CB offer has not tracked for me at all.

Celia

At all or did it never get past step 1? I got an email that said I activated it but that’s it so far. If it tracks, great. If it doesn’t, no loss.

Kelly
Kelly

I got the email that the offer activated but it never got past step 1.

Dylan
Dylan

Same for me. Maybe it no longer works with gift cards?

Edit: something weird happened for me.

Retailmenot has two staples offers, one for in store ($5 off $30) and one for online (up to $20 off offer). Retailmenot seems to know i made a purchase since its showing up in my transaction history on the app, but the online offer is still just activated and not pending.

Meanwhile, the $5 off $30 in store offer is now pending even though these obvoiusly arent in-store purchases. I dont know why, but at least one of the offers as sort of unexpectedly worked.

I’ve only tried the in-store cashback at Staples and was paid. Never used the online one. Did the online cashback pay out before?

Does anyone know if the qty 3 limit is per household/address or per person? In other words, can my wife and I both do it with different credit cards.

Bought 3, trigger two AMEX offers on my biz blue (1) 10% off up to 100 and (2) extra point at Staples so got 900 MR and $30 off on the cards.

Do these cash out easily at WMT or will they require the hit-the-cancel-button technique?

Go to giftcardkey.com but you need the activation code

Celia

Got my activation letter today, had gotten the cards over a week ago. Glad I waited, was much simpler to activate and register all at once. Used the cards right away.

I received my activation code but when I go to giftcardkey.com, it says my card number is invalid. It does not let me move to the activation stage. Any ideas on how to get past this issue? Thanks.

Celia

You need to enter the number on the back of the card, not the card number. It’s located on the top right of the barcode. There should be an image that illustrates where. I did the same thing.

Steve

Cards arrived without any value loaded on them. Calling the number on the back of the card was told to call Staples. Staples opened a case and still hasn’t gotten back to me. Unable to activate the cards since the card value is $0.

Call GiftCardMall 877-426-2551, wait on hold for 15 mins, provide staples order #, your name, billing address, and phone. Then card is activated but funds will not load for another 2 hours.

Teebee

I called that number, waited for 37 minutes (to be exact), two hours later still unable to register card.

Just called. Waited about 10 minutes and provided information for the Staples 2 orders. I will follow up if there are any further problems.

They said that the funds should be available in 1 to 2 hours.

Called this morning. Talked with CSR for 10 mins, card was working 2 hours later. Very annoying. I would never buy one of these again.

Called whom? Staples or card services?

Christine K

My cards arrived with no value loaded on them as well. Did the online chat with Staples and they told me to call Gift Card Mall. Gift Card Mall told me that Staples never loaded a value on them. Back to Staples customer service – closed. Back with online chat, they put in an email to customer service about the issue, probably just like yours, Steve, they “opened a case”. Will follow up and post resolution. Please do the same, Steve, so I know how you got it fixed. Thanks.
