Our Verdict

I believe the activation issues that crop up with Staples are only for online purchases, so these should be fine (?). Use your Amex Offer for 10% off if you have that one or use your INK Plus/Cash card for 5x or another card that earns at a high rate on office supply storesSome people also have a good Chase offer and another Chase Offer for $30 off $100 on business cards just got released.

Finally. Been waiting for this. Thanks for the heads up.

I clearly didn’t get 5% back for Visa gift card purchases for Amex Simply Cash biz card. Anybody knows if I can get 5% back for 3rd part gift cards (Amazon etc.) purchases in Staples?

Hg
Hg

I got my 5%, the 5% has a 2 month lag.

Celia
Celia

I’ve been getting 5% on my Simply Cash card for all purchases, including Visa, 3rd party and other items. My purchases in November earned on my last statement.

Just in time! I have about $600 left to max out my CIC, which resets on March 1!

‘1 per customer’ means that only 1 per transaction will get the discount, but if you are lucky the CSR will let you do multiple transactions right?

brian
brian

if you are the lucky, the cashier will let you do multiples at once. limit of 1 is not hardcoded, at least the last time they ran this. they let me do 5.

Kyle T
Kyle T

In the past 1 per customer has been enforced or not varying from store to store and sometimes differently with each CSR, but is not hard coded in the system. If they allow you to buy more than one in one transaction or multiple, they have always been $200 each.

b
b

I would just try more than 1 per transaction. My store is very sensitive to trying to split payments between multiple cards so you likely can’t do multiple transactions. But you could run thru 2 different registers and maybe get 2 per trip. And you can always come back later…

Rowan
Rowan

In the past a few stores have let me purchase up to 10 cards at once, with the consistently stated limitation of a max purchase total of $2k/customer per day, though I’m convinced that’s just enforced by each individual employee so theoretically possible to come back after shift change for another run. However all stores in my area have now sadly been limiting me to 1 card total so as always YMMV!

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the optimal use of these gift cards if you manage to get one fee-free? Is it just the discount on general spend, or are there other uses for ’em?

I’ve misplaced a gift card or 2 over the years, and I hate the Doh! moment when I realized I just literally *lost* money. I prefer to use up GCs immediately, before I forget about them, so if the plan is just to carry & use the GC for a few days or weeks, then I’d probably pass on this kind of deal.

Celia
Celia

Manufactured spend on a credit card that gets more back at office supply stores. The use of the cards veries: some people use them for normal spend, some people use them for money orders, etc, depends on personal situation.

In addition, Amex biz cards has a 10% back on $500 spend. So if using for normal spend, it’s like transferring that discount somewhere else like a medical bill, insurance and so forth,

Tim
Tim

I have 2 primary uses:

1. pay my gas & electric bills in advance on-line
2. buy Sam’s/Walmart GC’s since we do most of our shopping there and it’s tough to regularly get 5% off at these places

SkinnyElvis
SkinnyElvis

You can always just prepay your taxes for a $2 fee. I think you can do two debt card prepayments per quarter. I also use them to make donations to charities that I would otherwise donate using a credit card.

Jeff H
Jeff H

Actually, you can do two per IRS approved service. total of six per quarter. Process as a debit card.

Eric

@Diomiuti I use them for general spend and to buy MOs. Using the VGCs for general spend is great since using them to buy stuff is like getting 5% off on everything. Losing VGCs suck but that just means u need to take better care of them. Put spare unused VGCs in a separate wallet to use once u drain ur current VGC and u wont be losing ur VGC.

Lucky enough to still have a bluebird so I load that for fee free MS.

Kyle

Awesome. I have been slowly increasing the number I purchase in one transaction from the local Staples with each deal. Last time their VGCs disappeared pretty quick so apparently I’m not the only one. The 2 other Staples a little bit further away are strict about the 1 per transaction.

Depends on which CSR. Some Staples cashiers let you buy multiples of $200 VGCs whereas OD staff have always let limit me to 1 transaction even though I asked if I could do another set of 2 x $200 there.

These work for Amex signup bonus, or are they reporting as gc from staples? I need to hit 10k for new bus gold and will definitely need some ms.

Do not use gift cards for an Amex SUB. Staples reports L3 data.

Prepay your taxes with the CC if you haven’t already filed. Then report the overpayment when you file and you’ll get that back. Or do it for next year if you can afford the 10k float.

I’ve got the Hilton Honors Surpass Card and this card gives you Diamond status at Hilton properties after spending $40k in a calendar year. If I buy gift cards with this offer would that spend count towards the $40k? I normally just use my Chase Ink for the 5X UR but I’ve got an unusually large number of stays at Hilton properties for work this year so I figured having Diamond would be a nice bonus.

RyanS

Hilton Diamond is not worth the effort. Chase 5x points is the better option.

Get the Aspire then for $450. Instant Diamond. Unless you’ve used up your 5 spots. Could always upgrade the Surpass if you’ve had it more than a year.

Anybody using these cards to load BlueBird? I am applying for today. Do u load them at Cust Serv at Walmart or regular register? Can u load BB at self-checkout using this GC? Anything particular u have to inform the cashier or cust service about loading BB using this? Just want to make sure to use correct terminology to avoid any scrutiny using this GC for loading BB. How many can or rather should u try to load in one visit, etc? Appreciate the feedback. Thank you.

Denis
Denis

You can load BB at customer service and regular register, but not at self checkout.
Max 3 cards ($600) per transaction but I would start with one at a new place.
Just say “I want to put money on my card” to the cashier/CSR

kenpet
kenpet

Thank you so much. Just a little more clarification. If you want to use 3 cards for the transaction, for example, you tell them u want to load $600 and then split the payments across 3 cards? Is it automatic? Or u have to tell them $200 amt for each card? Not sure if you can specify a particular $ amt for each card? It probably takes the entire amt. Stop&Shop has the best Point-of-Sale where you can specify exact amt for each payment type. Do they give hard time for using GC or it is ok and accepted? Thanks again

Rowan
Rowan

In my experience when you ask a regular WMT cashier to split tender during a prepaid card load they have a high likelihood of reverting to “you must be one of those dangerous money launderers” mode and just send you to the Money Center/customer service.

That said, their systems are definitely capable of it like Denis said, though after you tell the cashier the total amount you’ll still need to specify how much you want to put on each card before you run them. Again this often ends up with them messing something up and requires a CSM key to reset the register, so give it a try but be prepared for a headache just like everything else at Wal-Mart!

Here’s what I’d suggest instead if you do end up running into these same issues – KEEP IT SIMPLE: run one card at a time in each transaction. Yes it’s painful but I just find it more productive overall since I can just come back around for a run by another cashier (preferably one who’s behind the register you were just at). It also helps if you’re playing in 2-player mode and can ask to do it again for your wife, brother, etc. I’ve found most cashiers have been fine with this.

Finally, end your unloading run at the Money Center where you shouldn’t have as much trouble running 3 cards in one transaction as long as they’re ok with prepaid cards in general. I also usually do a money order while I’m there (this can done with up to 4 different cards.)

Rowan
Rowan

And if you haven’t already looked into it GoBank prepaid cards are another no-fee avenue for WMT unloading. All of the above procedures apply to them as well.

Jack
Jack

If I don’t have either of those and just want to offload a few cards a month, which is my better option as far as fees and not doing any direct deposits or anything. I did google a comparison and the most recent info seems to be from 2015 or 16.

Rowan
Rowan

Probably a money order imo. It’s only $.88 and low volume like that shouldn’t cause you any issues with most banks. It’s still probably a good idea to deposit them in an account that’s you don’t use as your day-to-day checking though, just to be safe.

Jack
Jack

Money orders aren’t possible at the money center. Supermarkets in my area also only take cash. Only option would be really reload at a cashier at Walmart so looking at that option now.

Rowan
Rowan

Yikes, that’s unfortunate. Maybe check Doc’s post from a while back about the various flavors of Serve? There might be an option that just charges a low fee for loading but doesn’t require jumping through hoops to avoid the monthly fee…

Jack
Jack

Thanks. Wanted to avoid serve but I’ll check that out.

Rowan
Rowan

Hmm I suppose spending down your VGC’s cards organically on non-bonused categories is always an option. I try to avoid it because I don’t like having to keep track of the individual card balances but if you’re only dealing with a few a month it could be worth it…

Don’t forget that any refunds will usually be sent back to the original form of payment so be sure to keep good records of which cards get used where!

Jack
Jack

Thanks. After looking at both, based on the comments, it looks like BB is the best way to go out of the two.

MCT
MCT

You might want to read the 10 or so DOC shutdown posts before you do that.

Jack

I have but thanks for pointing it out. Willing to chance liquidating 2 or 3 cards a month. More often than not I would use it to pay bills not ATM withdrawals.

kenpet
kenpet

This is great info. I truly appreciate it. I will just use one at a time to avoid hassle. Can you please clarify what you are referring to with regards to Money Center? How do most folks use money loaded to Bluebird? Pay bills, etc? Is there a way to transfer money to your bank acct from BB? Thx

kenpet
kenpet

Rowan Can you please clarify what you are referring to with regards to Money Center? How do most folks use money loaded to Bluebird? Pay bills, etc? It seems if you just withdraw cash then they end up shutting down the acct down the road? I am planning to pay utility bills, medical bills and tuition fees, etc. Will avoid withdrawing the money to the extent possible.

Denis
Denis

I say like “$600 total, $200 from the first card”. The outcome may vary. Some cashiers are OK with that, some have no idea how to load money/split tender and call for a manager (who can either help or revert you) or just say “go to customer service for that”.
If I visit WMT before 10pm I go to customers service first, then do shopping and unload cards with a cashier, then maybe to CS again. Remember of $1000 daily limit with BB though.

kenpet
kenpet

Thanks again for all the info wrt limit. That is you can only load $1000 to ur BB card per day, correct? Why go to the cust serv first and at the end as well? Thanks

Denis
Denis

Yes, with BB you can load up to $1000 daily and $5000 monthly if I remember correctly.
Using $200 VGC you can unload $600 max per transaction. Technically you can ask cashier/CSR to make a second load, I just don’t like it. And I start with one card at any new place to test the waters.

kenpet
kenpet

Denis Thank you. I was looking at the fee chart for BB, and it showed that there is a way to load money online with debit card. Does this work with VGC? Has anyone tried it. Thanks.

Denis
Denis

I don’t think it works

kenpet
kenpet

Denis Thank you for all your input here. I got my BB card and was able to load it with these VGC. One observation: I loaded $38 from my VGC today. It didn’t ask me for my PIN. When the amount was > $100, it always asked for the PIN. What is the threshold amount up to which Walmart doesn’t ask for the PIN? Thx.

kenpet
kenpet

After researching on this a little more, it seems the threshold is $50. Any purchase under $50 (including cash back) doesn’t require PIN at Walmart.

There are also various new Chase Offers. I have 20% back (max $34) on a CIC and $10 back on $100+ on CIP. The second one is not too useful for this promotion as I’d be missing out on 800UR by not buying with my CIC (I’ve yet to find a cashier at at least 5-6 Staples on many different occasions in two different states that knows how to split a transaction on 2 different credit cards). A family member also has $30 back on $100+ on a CIC. It seems like this might be targeted more towards business cards perhaps as I’ve only ever gotten offers for 10% back with a max of $6 on personal credit and debit cards with Chase.

More specifically, I believe the activation issues are with Master Cards at Staples and not Visas.

lilurbanachiever
lilurbanachiever

I would not touch MGCs with a 60-ft pole. They are not processed as debit and are even flatly declined by some payment processors that happily accept CCs and VGCs, as of this January. Thats even before possible activation/draining issues.

Fathiss
Fathiss

@liurbanachiever: They actually can be processed as debit cards, just not at WalMart. I have two places to liquidate. I liquidated a number of the $100 ones many had issues on the last round. Used as debit to buy MOs. So don’t be so definitive in your language. Just because you haven’t found a route does not mean it doesn’t exist.

Ed k
Ed k

There’s always been a greater risk with MGCs compared to VGCs in a lot of minds, but there was a problem with VGCs from Staples within the past year. I and others I know had a lot of problems with VGCs from Walgreens, so much that my area is considered dead for buying those there. I was reimbursed by the issuer, but it took a while. Then tried again and same problem, so I learned and take my business elsewhere for the most part. I buy other things when successfully buying VGCs at stores. That’s the point of sales… to get people in the door. Supply vendors help create the discounts to move the product as long as stores cooperate. Bad managers can do much more harm to a store. It’s amazing that the art of customer service isn’t taught or accepted like it used to be, but the good managers usually excel and keep their locations open and their staff inspired.

I got to my local Staples when they opened today and they only had two cards in the entire store, including the back. They said they got cleared out by the last fee-free promo. Shouldn’t corporate make sure they have stock when they’re going to put something on sale?

The way that corporate would ensure that is by enforcing the limit of one per person, but i’m sure that is not what you want.

Is there a method to transfer money instantly to a Chase business checking account on the weekend?

If your Chase online account is combined business & personal, does it let you instantly transfer from your personal Chase checking to business Chase checking?

Yes it should on your 2nd question. Instant transfers from another bank might be best accomplished with Zelle, though I’d do a test first to make sure it works properly.

Steven

The second half of last year was strange, with Staples and OD/OM constantly trying to one up each other (trying to push overall revenue for the purpose of selling the company???), but in 2017 and 2018 they were almost quarterly. Who knows which model 2020 will follow? But I do know it gets harder to purchase in volume and liquidate every time. The game is always changing, but that’s what keeps it interesting. FM has a database (not perfectly accurate, but better than nothing) of when the sales have happened in the past: https://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/current-visa-mastercard-gift-card-deals/
