[Expired] Staples: No Purchase Fee On $200 Visa Gift Cards (5/5-5/11), Now Live

Deal has expired, view more Staples deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Direct link to offer (page 8)

  • Staples is offering no purchase fees on $200 Visa gift cards in store.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 5/5-5/11
  • Limit one per customer
  • In store only

Our Verdict

Make sure to use a card that earns at a high rate at office supply stores, there is also an amex offer. They printed limit one this time, unlike last time it was offered. 3% back in store via Dosh, not valid on gift cards but not enforced.

Hat tip to GC Galore

some chase personal cards (not business) have a current 10% offer that might still be in effect on sunday.

Chase/Bofa 10% has $6 max cashback limit. Use chase ink to get 5%~$10

Between OD/OM and Staples, there seem to be a significantly larger number of sales this year on prepaids than any time in the recent past. Am I mistaken? No complaints for me, but just wondering why that is.

Curious George

Same doubt here, Might be an easy way to boost up the sales number, when sales in other categories are declining badly.

Joe

Sales of prepaid gift cards do not count towards the store’s overall sales numbers.

Same store gift card? Or Third Party GC?

Barry

There’s been a lot of sales, but the discounts aren’t as good as they used to be. I miss the days when you’d get $20 back on the purchase of 2 $200 VGC at Staples. You also used to be able to get $30 back at OfficeMAX/Office Depot on the purchase of 3 $200 VGC.

Eric
Eric

Agreed. It used to be better deals at Staples where you buy 2 x $200 VGCs and you receive a $20 Staples GC. People may not look at Staples GC as favorably but at least it was a money maker and personally I have used it to buy electronics at Staples.

Same with OM/OD when they used to have $30 off 3 x $200 VGCs. However they were using OV’s back then which are now harder to dump unless you have Serve.

Super, was running low on UR.

is limited one enforced at staple for this deal? I remember we can buy multiple in one order last year.

Mimi
Mimi

always been YMMV. sometimes, even at the same Staples, cashiers can make their own rules so just keep trying at your go-to branches.

Brian
Brian

Know your stores. Of the 6+ around me, all enforce except for one, which will allow 10 per day.

Barry
Barry

Mine enforces the limit. It’s hardly worth the drive for one card.

I got a mystery coupon from staples- $5-$1000 on 5/2/19. Expires on 5/11/19 email subject is- Your mystery reward is inside!

Kumar

Yes I too received an email from staples for mystery offer

Eric
Eric

The mystery reward coupon is not applicable on Gift cards. I tried to ask the cashier to scan the code when I was at the register and he told me that it was not applicable on Gift cards so he didn’t bother to scan it.

Is it still possible to liquidate these visa GCs via bluebird? It seems like it has died at most walmarts near me. Any other ideas other than MOs from USPS which seems like dying too?

Gerald

Serve at some Family Dollar stores.

Mimi
Mimi

I just liquidated them during the break to S/BB/GoBank without a problem. I load maximum of $500 per card (for OSS VGCs, $200) and NEVER do split tender on one card, i.e., load $1K to S/BB in one transaction since max that can be loaded in one day is $2.5K. If I want to load the max amount, it is done in separate transactions, different registers.

John
John

I have no problems loading Visa GCs via BB in the San Diego area. I usually do $500 Visa X 3 = $1,500 per transaction (four swipes is maximum allowed per transaction and verifying BB card counts as one swipe).

Nathan
Nathan

Which Walmarts in the San Diego area are friendly to these type of transactions?

John
John

El Cajon, Serra Mesa and Clairemont Mesa all are friendly.

Thank you

I thought there was a reload limit of $200 per day/ $1000 per month on the Bluebird card.

toddo

All the walmarts around me won’t load at registers anymore. And moneycenter denies VGC. Game over for me. Any other methods?

can’t you add it to your Venmo account and pay your significant other with it? Venmo is fee free on debit cards.

potatoslayer
potatoslayer

That RARELY works and I have probably had at least a year since Venmo allowed me to do a VGC

Glenn
Glenn

venmo runs them as credit cards so you have to pay 3%

Where is that? WF EarnMore Mall offer?

Only 2.5% with my Wells Fargo EarnMore Mall offer. You have 6.5%?

Anyone recently used Visa gc on plastiq? Any difficulties? %Fees? I used $200 MasterCard I got from Staples a week ago and the fee was 1%

86

Most VGCs don’t work on Plastiq.

kreo
kreo

Really? Their site says we accept all Visa Mastercard prepaid cards. Why wouldn’t Visa work while Mastercard does?

77Jake
77Jake

The in store MC’s will have a 1% fee with Plastiq but the VGC’s will come with the standard 2.5% fee. For those of us in places where Plastiq is one of the few ways to liquidate, the $200 no fee MC’s are more valuable than VGC’s.

DayTrade
DayTrade

That’s sad.. was hoping for 1% again. Btw what are other ways to liquidate them, besides WM / Plastiq?

How does AMEX code with Staples? With Office Depot/Max when a g.c. is purchased it’s coded as a Visa Gift Card.

Andrew D
Andrew D

Should be the same. Staples reports same L3 data to Amex that OD does

DOSH is 5% today, Sunday 5/5.

Max $5 per day anyway which already gets maxed out from one VGC at 3%

can we load this VGC to serve and pay mortgage?

I just stopped by Staples, bought $600 with BofA 10% and Dosh 3%, cashier didn’t care about the 1 GC rule. I will try tomorrow again.

1 GC rule is now being enforced in San Diego – tried at two different Staples.

I was able to buy $600 (3 cards) each at two different stores today. The employee ringing them up didn’t bat an eye.

My local Walmart Neighborhood Market seems to have caught wind of (at least one cashier) the “no giftcard” policy for reloading bluebird/serve and money orders. I was turned down the other week when the cashier noticed I was using a gift card to try to load serve even though I did tell her I was using a regular debit card. The cashier did peek when I was swiping the GC and noticed right away. This is the first time this happens to me at a WNM. Family Dollar seems more reliable in this aspect of never being turned down for reloads with GCs.

DK
DK

Well this aint good news. I flirt heavily and really try to make a good impression with all the gals at my WNM so hopefully they keep sliding me through. Also just got stonewalled at Staples for the first time ever on 2k in VGC. Getting tighter, lets go recession!

James Bond

All the Staples in my area have a strict 1 VGC per day policy for this promotion. Previous promos were less strict until now.
