[Publicly Available] American Express Hilton Ascend Upgrade Offers Of 150,000 Being Sent Out

Another Update on 6/4/19: There’s also a direct link to upgrade to the Aspire card. Same 150,000 points upgrade bonus, higher spend requirement at $4,000. This card comes with a $400 fee. (Thanks reader Trimal)

Another update on 6/4/19: Sounds from the comments like the direct link is working for everyone most people. I’d do this quickly if you’re interested. Here’s the direct upgrade link for posterity. (Big thanks to reader diggs for sending in the link)

Update 6/4/19: Another round of upgrade offers has gone out via email. There’s even a direct link you can try which we didn’t have before, though it likely won’t work for many people who didn’t get the email offer.

Update 5/7/19: Another round out, subject line is ‘Upgrade and earn 150,000 Hilton Honors Points’ . Hat tip to reader Shade.

Update 4/19/19: Another round of upgrade offers has gone out. Hat tip to Traveling For Miles

The Offer

No direct link. E-mails have been sent out (unknown subject line) and some people also have the deal showing up when logged in

  • Some American Express Hilton cardholders are being offered to upgrade to the Hilton Ascend card and receive a bonus of 150,000 points after $3,000 in spend within the first three months

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $95
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 12X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio worldwide
    • 6X Hilton Honors Bonus Points at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. restaurants, and U.S. gas stations
    • 3X Hilton Honors Bonus Points on all other eligible purchases
  • 10 free priority pass lounge passes
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors gold status. Earn Diamond status after spending $40,000 in purchases within a calendar year
  • One Weekend Night Reward at a hotel or resort in the Hilton portfolio after spending $15,000 in purchases on the card in a calendar year
  • No foreign transaction fees

Our Verdict

Previous upgrade offers have been for 75,000 or 100,000 points so this is significantly better than that. Usually 150,000 points is only offered when upgrading to the Aspire card. Best straight sign up bonus on this card has been 150,000 points as well. The nice thing about upgrade offers is that it’s possible to get the upgrade bonus even if you’ve received the sign up bonus on that card previously. For more information on upgrade offers in general, you’ll find this linked post highly helpful.

Does this count against 5/24?

Upgrades generally do not because you’re keeping the same account history

oh man for Ascend? that’s loads better than what i opted for last fall.

in the words of Ron Burgundy I IMMEDIATELY REGRET THIS DECISION

Actually got this a couple weeks ago. Funnily enough, it was for a Surpass card which I opened just over a year ago (which was later converted to an Ascend), then subsequently downgraded to the no-AF card, and then a month later received this upgrade offer. I wasn’t sure if I would actually be awarded the welcome bonus but I upgraded anyway, hit the MSR and the points posted about 3 days later.

JR just curious, why did you downgrade initially to the Ascend instead of going direct to the no-fee version when your Surpass year was up? I’m about to downgrade my Surpass, and had intended to go to the no-fee, but wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything by going to the Ascend first.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I originally got the Surpass late 2017, but AmEx later changed it to the Ascend in 2018. So that happened automatically. I then downgraded to the no-AF card at the end of year 1. Then after 1-2 months I got the upgrade offer. Hope that clarifies things.

Anyone that already had the aspire got an offer on the ascend?

I did. 150K miles.

No but I used the link provided above and was approved immediately. Great thing is we are headed to Waldorf Maui next week – so $250 credit is great and more points!

I would not recommend accepting the upgrade offer until you have done the sign up bonus first. You should apply for the ascend separately using a referral link. get the sign up bonus, then upgrade your Hilton to a second ascend once the upgrade offer is available.

If you upgrade first you will lose eligibility for the sign up bonus.

I’m assuming the the Hilton card that you have will still get the upgrade bonues if you sign up for the ascend separately? And do you have to wait for the first bonus to post to upgrade the second one?

So you would pay for 2 annual fees just for the sign up bonus points?

Why wouldn’t you pay $95 in exchange for 150 000 Hilton points?

I got this offer on my Hilton Honors Business Card, would upgrading turn this into a personal card?

VL
VL

That is really strange. Never seen upgrade offers cross biz-personal. Also does not make much sense in terms of AF – both have the same $95 and similar set of benefits. Can you plz doible check? Anyone else seen something similar?

Lrdx

The what? There is only one hilton business card. Didn’t you just receive a regular/targeted offer for a new personal card?

It’s an upgrade offer

Amex hates me, not getting any upgrade offers across 4 players. I really need an Aspire upgrade so that I can finally apply for the card and double dip.

bungalo
bungalo

FWIW, I received an upgrade off on my no AF card which went away after applying (to double dip) and being approved for the card. So waiting may not help.

I really hate that both cards start with A. I read articles about them almost everyday and still get headaches from the names.

Nowhere near as bad as Bonvoy Brilliant & Boundless 🙂

This is also why Amex is possibly backtracking to the Surpass name (ie. Ascend being renamed back to Surpass).

now that i see that im targeted thanks to will and chuck , i was wandering even if only an estimate based on recent dp how long i would have to upgrade as i would most likely want to wait a few months till i can afford the annual fee. wondering and would love an answer thank you for your time

I just happened to call in about my 2 Ascend cards and possibly to drop one. I was offered this upgrade on one of my cards over the phone. The moral…don’t just wait for an email, call in and ask if you are pre-selected.

Be careful with upgrading and downgrading and upgrading again within a year. The RATs will arbitrarily withhold your bonus even though the terms say nothing.

JR
JR

I can see it if you call in & request it, but how can they really do that if they solicit you for an upgrade?

VL
VL

Sure they can. It is in T&C you are agreeing to. Need to keep the upgraded card for full 12 months to avoid your bonus to be clawed back.

VL
VL

+1. Important! Rules applied to an upgradr are similar for the new acct. You need to keep this acct open for 12 months. If you downgrade before you may loose your uograde bonus. Just mark the date of an upgrade and make sure you downgrade or close only after 12 mons and 1 day (or later). Your next full AF will post on your anniversary date (not on your upgrade date)… so you may not be able to close acct and get the fee refunded. But you should be able ro downgrade and get it prorated, which with combination of current year prorated fee should end up being close to one full AF.

Good luck.

My wife got this exact offer in late 2018. She upgraded, but when she activated the card, she was told she wasn’t eligible for the bonus because she had previously received a bonus when upgrading to the Surpass card (which later became the Ascend card.) She appealed to a Supervisor who confirmed she would NOT receive the bonus, and he was a real jerk about it. So she downgraded back to the no-fee card. I’m just sharing this as a reminder that Amex will sometimes deny an upgrade bonus, even if you receive a targeted email offer. It’s definitely a YMMV situation.

DaveC

That sucks. I upgraded to Surpass a few years ago and downgraded back to free card before Surpass became Ascend. I recently got the Ascend offer and got the points.

Jim

I upgraded almost a month ago and have only been able to spend $400 of the $4K spend req. high spend req sucks and bad timing when all the MS tricks are gone. Also Amex is hard on big abnormal purchases too.

OffByOne
OffByOne

Amex should be easy to spend on (outside of Simon/GCM etc.).
This is also the Ascend with the 6x on grocery spend. That’s just an icing on the cake. You should not have any trouble buying ‘grocery’ with this card..
