[Expired] [Targeted] Citi Cards: 5-10x Points On Select Categories

The Offer

Many Citi ThankYou, American Airlines, and Expedia cardholders are getting email or mail offers for 10x points on select categories. The offers vary, here’s what we’ve seen thus far:

  • Earn 10x ThankYou points/AAdvantage miles per $1 spent, up to 2,500 points, on grocery, drugstore, and mass/commuter transit purchases. (Includes online purchases.) Some people’s offer includes gas stations and/or restaurants as well.
  • Earn 10x AAdvantage miles per $1 spent, up to 2,500 miles, on eligible online purchases. Here are a few examples of some online purchases: online retailers, online grocery orders, online drugstore orders. (Offer excludes restaurants, gas stations and eligible American Airlines purchases earning double miles.)
    • Similar offer on Expedia card for 10% cashback.
  • Earn 5x ThankYou points, up to 2,500 points, on eligible purchases at: home improvement stores, home furnishing stores, computer & electronic stores, department store. Online purchases count too.
  • Earn 5x AAdvantage miles per $1 spent, up to 2,500 miles, on computer and electronics stores.

The Fine Print

  • Requires activation; must register by 8/15/20
  • Valid through 9/30/20

Our Verdict

These offers are targeted and vary by customer. Seems like the American Airlines cards are the most widely targeted, but other cards like the ThankYou lineup is getting them as well. Business cards are getting them too.

Separately, Prestige cardholders all have an offer ongoing to get 5x for online purchases through August 31.

I received a similar offer on my Citi Simplicity card yesterday. It’s for 10% back (max $25 in total) on these categories:
• Restaurants (including takeout meals and curbside pickup orders)
• Grocery stores (including curbside pickup and online delivery)
• Gas stations
• Drugstores (including prescription orders made online)
• Mass Transit & Commuter Transportation vendors

Like the other offers, activate by 8/15/20, and use by 9/30/20.

So far, haven’t as yet seen any promos like this on my other Citi AA cards, but did see this (of all places) on my Citi Diamond Preferred card:

Use your card to earn 5% back as a statement credit, up to $25, through 09/30/2020 on purchases¹ like:

Restaurants: including takeout meals and curbside pickup orders
Shopping: including online purchases made at your favorite retailer’s website
Groceries: including curbside pickup and online orders
Travel and more!

Surprised though as the penurious cap on these citi offers. Only $25? (as in capped at $500 in purchases)

Compared to what Chase and Amex has been offering these citi deals are real yawners….

(hey, speaking of ex-yawners, even my sock drawer got a hit… better than Cit…. on my Barclays Frontier legacy card (no a/f version), I’ll get a $20 statement credit for each month I spend $300 (on anything). Haven’t actually used this card for anything other than 0% b/t offers…. but hey, 6.67% cash back…. might have its uses.

Haven’t the really good deals on the Chase and AMEX cards been on their cards that have annual fees? Certainly the Chase Sapphire Reserve is a pay card. Nice deal on the Barclays card.

My Expedia Voyager card offer:

Use your card to earn 10% back as a statement credit, up to $25, through 09/30/2020 on purchases¹ like:

Restaurants: including takeout meals and curbside pickup orders
Shopping: including online purchases made at your favorite retailer’s website
Groceries: including curbside pickup and online orders
Travel and more!

I am very intrigued by the “and more” part.

I got this as well on the Voyager card. I have a feeling that it’s on any purchase.Easy enough to try by making a small purchase of something “and more”. On the other hand, I still have a $10 off MC gift card e-coupon to use at Acme, so I could just buy the whole $250 in one transaction.

My Expedia Voyager card offer seems pretty broad, but limited to $25 in bonus earnings.

Use your card to earn 10% back as a statement credit, up to $25, through 09/30/2020 on purchases¹ like:

Restaurants: including takeout meals and curbside pickup orders
Shopping: including online purchases made at your favorite retailer’s website

Nothing for the Expedia+ card for me. They have been terrible about doing other types of rewards for all their customers now that it is hard to make points on travel due to the pandemic.

I got it on the Voyager card with annual fee. Maybe they’re doing it for the pay cards.

That’s the one I have, the gold colored card. I think it is randomly targeted.

That’s pretty great. Low caps, but it’s a nice way to attract some spend to those cards and reward their consumers.
Of course, I got the official notification of the Prestige’s 5x online yesterday, 28 days after it started. I’m perplexed how Citi (and AmEx) are taking so long to put out these notices, and why they’re sending to some consumers a month before they tell others. It’s not like their email servers are swamped…

I got the 5 TYP on online purchases through 8/31/20. My email doesn’t say anything about activation. I assume the offer is automatically loaded.
