The Offer

Direct link to offer is: pnc.com/growthoffer might need to open this in incognito mode to get it to show the proper offer. In addition there is targeted language

  • PNC is offering a bonus of $500 when you open Virtual Wallet with Performance Select and complete the following requirements:
    • Establish a direct deposit of $5,000+
    • Make at least 10 qualifying purchases with your PNC debit card

The Fine Print

  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Virtual Wallet With Performance Select $25 Monthly Fee

You can get this fee waived if you meet any of the following:

  • Average monthly balance of $5,000 or more
  • Qualifying direct deposits of $5,000 or more
  • $25,000 in linked eligible accounts

Early Account Termination Fee

There is an early account termination fee of $25. This is charged if you close your account within 180 days. There is some evidence to suggest that they don’t actually charge this fee, but YMMV.

Our Verdict

There are a few URLs floating around for this offer, but they all seem to display a bonus for $300 instead of $500, so not sure what’s going on there. Normally the public bonus is $300 with the same requirements, so if you did get this $500 offer this is basically just an extra $200 and well worth doing. We won’t add this to the best bank account bonuses as it’s targeted.

Wow, yeah same requirements with the public offer but $200 more so this is definitely worth it.
For anyone targeted, check the PNC public bonus page for what counts as DD.
Couple info that I know of PNC: From what I know they can be a little EWS sensitive. The bonus batch posts at towards the end of the month. And downgrading the to lowest tier is very easy to do on the website and is instant. Only $500 instead of $5000 is needed to keep the lowest tier account free. But I believe you can only downgrade after 45 days of opening.

It is 45 days to downgrade your account online but you can always call if you want to downgrade earlier.

Ohh I see, thanks for the info!

Hmm… wondering how they select the targets, apparently they will not send the mails to the current customers. Then who?

I got one. I closed my account last year without receiving any bonus. I assume that it’s past customers and others who are potential customers in future!!!

Maybe credit card holders or family members of current account holders?

My spouse was targeted via mailer. I have no idea how/why. No prior link to PNC and is a non-citizen. So no online app possible. I tried to open once in the past, but was unable. So perhaps it was EWS as mentioned in the first comment above?

5000 DD is too high

Yeah, lots of DPs on what works as DD though.

Burton

True – but there are also some recent failures using ones that used to work. Check out the comments in the other PNC post.

Any info on how soon does PNC post the bonus?

Historically PNC has been known to post quickly – so you can get the bonus within the first month if you are able to complete requirements and then downgrade.

Got targeted the day before my $300 bonus from opening an account in early July hit…. Strange, no way I can get this matched right?

Its pnc.com/growthoffer

Peek

I see $500 in incognito in MA. Chrome browser. I also see “intended for address only.”

Anyone know how much time is needed between bonuses for PNC? How long one needs to wait before applying for a other bonus.

SeanK
SeanK

Has to be 12 months after your last bonus date and with the account closed for more than 90 days.

Thank you. Need to sit this one out.

Since it’s targeted…. most everyone has to sit it out. Unless they aren’t QA’ing it. Oh yeah, just like they don’t QA the state you live in, or the DD origin. I am sure some people will test the waters.

JuicyJosh

Im out. PNC currently open (yep im not a < 6 mo closer). SO closed in May.

Gadget 🕵️

Same-ish here. S.O. Closed Aug 16th on a 5 month fail (so pissed about it I/she is ignoring the ETF & so is PNC AFAIK), and I’m currently account open and awaiting my crappy $300.

But, I’d bet some will try this for a 67% increase over $300.

I was one debit card transaction short and closed the account on 08/28/19. Any chance PNC enforces the 90 cool down period?

Gadget 🕵️

Sorry, I have no clue. I would just wait it out. SO closed her’s on 8/16… so I know your pain.

Ash

So u are sure that there only needs to be 90 days from the time u received the bonus to be eligible for the next bonus ?

There is no way they don’t check this, They will just run your contact info up against the targeted list. 20 minutes of programming and save tens of thousands in bonus payout,

Gadget 🕵️

I know it seems like common sense, but, as someone who has seen a fair amount of shenanigans, I am not 100% certain you are correct…. I know banks don’t catch everything. I was involved in the 2016-2017 M&T slaughter. How many minutes of programmer time would it take for a script to be developed that would see a person already has an account, and collected a bonus? My own personal code of ethics (and the fear of reprisal) restricted me to one use of the promo code. But I know for a fact they didn’t check up on their terms, even though CSR’s would tell you it wouldn’t work. What the promotions department writes up on paper and the IT department implements can be 2 different things.

I wonder if it’s worth waiting for a public $500 PNC bonus..

Does anyone know how to get this offer on the regular Performance Select checking account (without Virtual Wallet)? It’s mentioned as qualifying in the fine print…

Adam
Adam

I am skeptical that this will work if you’re not targeted. My reasoning is that if you look at the URL to apply for the regular PNC bonus, it is:

https://www.pnc.com/en/apps/welcome-pages/virtual-wallet-performance-select.html?promoCode=DM119+

But the URL to apply for the targeted PNC bonus is:

https://www.pnc.com/en/apps/welcome-pages/virtual-wallet-performance-select.html

In other words, it’s the same URL except with no promo code language at the end. This suggests that on the targeted offer, you are simply using a generic URL to apply for the Virtual Wallet with no promo code. And from what I understand about PNC, there is nowhere in the PNC application to enter a promo code. So I would guess that for this targeted offer, the bonus is not even attached to your account when you apply for it. I assume that they will just run a program later that compares their targeted list to everyone that opened up accounts at the bank. There doesn’t seem to be anything on the targeted offer page that specifically links you to the bonus when you apply.

Enrico
Enrico

Maybe. Or maybe not. I got a letter and applied.

But the url on the paper I received is http://www.pnc.com/myoffer which then redirects to something different and if you then click on apply you go to the url you mentioned.

The website analytics can track from which url you came from or straight entered the url. Although it mentioned on the top page (my url listed above) “Only available in eligible markets and to intended addressee. ” It doesn’t mention anything in the fine print of the paper.

You can supposedly also apply in branch from where they only have the paper.

Question is if they keep track to whom they send the paper and if they enforce their “targeting”. Does anyone have a data point on this for past targeted offers?
Keeping track by name and address and maybe SSN seem to be more of a hassle and error prone then keeping track with special/unique codes.

Adam
Adam

All good points. Should be pointed out that the URL you got was http://www.pnc.com/myoffer which is different than pnc.com/growthoffer on this DOC page. /growthoffer (DOC link) has an expiration date of 09/30/19 with language of “offer available to intended addressee only”, while /myoffer (your link) has an expiration date of 10/31/19 with language of “Only available in eligible markets and to intended addressee”.
