[Expired] [Targeted] U.S. Bank Spending Bonuses: 20%-50% Bonus Points

Deal has ended, view more U.S. Bank deals by clicking here.

Update 7/29/21: Deal is back and valid August 1 – September 30 , 2021

The Offer

No direct link to offer, sent out via snail mail

  • U.S. Bank has sent out spending bonuses to some cardholders. The offers are for 20% or 50% bonus points but you need to spend a certain amount before the bonus points kick in (e.g spend $2,500 more)

The Fine Print

  • Valid through September 30 , 2021
  • Limit of 2,000 bonus points

Our Verdict

None of these offers are that great, although they are on the Fidelity card that earns 2% anyway so those offers could be OK. Annoying you need to spend before the bonus kicks in and low amount of bonus points as well.

I got an email today with one of these offers, so it must not be snail mail only.

Here’s what I got:

Start Earning

Earn up to 20% more points (up to 2,000 points) for every dollar you spend after you make $1,050 in purchases.*

Promotion Period

August 1 – September 30 , 2021

Get Enrolled

Enroll by August 31, 2021, and eligible purchases made between August 1 and September 30, 2021, will count toward this offer.

*** Calculation: X * 20% = 2,000. Solve for X, that comes to $10,000

So if I spend $11,050, I get an extra 2,000 points? Which, if spent on travel (1.5 CPP) gets me an extra $30???

WHOOPIE!!!

I don’t think this is what the offer is saying. I think you get an extra 20% on your actual *cashback*, not on what you spend initially. On my US Bank Cash+ card (where I got the offer) I get 5% back on utilities. I think this is saying that above $1,050, you get 6% (5% * 1.2) on your spend until you hit $20 or on $2,000 in spend (1% extra or 6%-5%). But since the 5% cap on this card is $2k for the quarter, I’d only spend $950 ($2,000 minus $1,050) which is an extra $9.50 ($950 * .01%)

At least that’s how I see it….US Bank offers are legendary for being written purposely confusing.

a good way to think of US Bank type of promos – what’s the max $ value here. would you drive across town to save $3 on chicken or something. that’s what they usually are – that kind of crazy high effort, low dollar incentive. maybe in a blue moon you can hit a bullet with a bullet and get value out of an offer. i don’t even track their offers on my spreadsheets anymore.

i find the US bank promos in general to be kind of bizarre, intended to be almost snarky
i had one for RV rental or something, an extra 2% on $500 of spend
that’s not a MCC code i think i have ever used, and the one time a family member rented an RV it was pretty $$$ i’m thinking 4k or so, so even that dollar value seems silly. that’s a spend that would go on a SUB card, which had some kind of insurance.

I received the offer on two of my cards. What is hilarious is that in order to receive the bonuses, I have to spend over $51K on a card that has a $27K credit limit, so I will only earn the 50% bonus on $3K if I max out the credit limit. The other card only has a $5K credit limit, and I will only receive a 20% bonus on spend over $9,900, so the bonus is on $100.

there will be some people who don’t understand those subtleties, attempt the spend, get nothing and if unlucky…will get a fee charged for being over the credit limit

i got it on my Altitude but min spend of 2500. my yearly run rate has been about 12k, so they’re only willing to reward for above and beyond spend.
