Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

This account has no monthly fees to worry about

Early Account Termination Fee

A $20 fee is charged if the account is closed within 180 days according to this fee schedule.

Our Verdict

Previous best bonus was $100, so this is considerably better than that. I definitely think this bonus is worth doing, there are a few requirements but none of them are particularly hard to meet. I’d recommend applying for this account ASAP, as I can see it being extremely popular and being pulled quickly. I’ll be adding it to our best bank account bonus page.

Darn, I’m illegible due to having an inspirus account.

Chao Xu

If you close inspirus checking account, and then apply, wouldn’t that be fine?

Thanks DOC, great find! Called Gesa – $5,000 CC funding limit and codes as a purchase. Representative seemed knowledgeable.

J

I haven’t ever been able to apply online. It always has me go in person, and it’s always a cash advance.

Can you fund the account online or do you have to visit a branch for it?

I was told 5K CC funding posting as purchase, but only with Discover or Mastercard.

My application went into pending approval status

Any credit card? And 5000 per account?

Rob

Any idea which CC is allowed to fund this: Visa/MC only or is AMEX allowed? I might want to knock out an amex application if it is allowed to fund.

James
James

AMEX not allowed. I wanted to do the same^.

Anyone with experience of funding with a usaa visa? Would be my first time and I’d like to avoid a cash advance. Thanks!

I did see that the bonus is for WA residents. Do they allow out of state people to open a checkin acct? The $5000 credit card funding is very attractive !!!

My in laws live in Washington, wondering if the close relative requirement will work.

Can I use Chase Hyatt Visa to fund? Does anyone know if chase visa code it as purchase or cash advance?

Chao Xu

“Member must not be a current Inspirus Credit Union checking account holder.”
Oh well, it was a mistake to open Inspirus just for the 8% interest on $1000.
Wonder if closing it now count as “have had a Gesa checking account within the last 90 days.”

A few notes:

-by default it creates a savings account that I was not able to remove

-did not see anything to denote the $300 bonus in the URL nor any promo code field; hope they have a good way or tracking the click through

-due to the two accounts I was unclear if I could put $5k towards each account or in total; I ended up splitting it between the two for a total of $5k

-account was not approved immediately and went to review

ThaigerNation
ThaigerNation

Called Support:
-no one per household limit
-no promo code needed it will trigger after completing requirements
-savings account is required
-still unclear if both accounts can be funded at $5k each

IME it’s pretty common with a credit union for the Savings Account to be the default / required account.

Credit unions are member-owned, you have to have an account representing your ownership share of the credit union. Most places this account can have a balance as low as $5 or $10 but it can’t be avoided.

Thaiger, must you fund the accounts during the application process or can you fund them later? Waiting for my MasterCard in the mail but don’t want to miss out on opening the account. Also did you use Master or Discover?

ThaigerNation

Need to fund during application, I used MC

And it processed it as a purchase and not a cash advance? Thanks for info.

ThaigerNation, I am new Gesa member too! and new to this bonus game. I initially funded each account with about $1000 (from my another bank account). But today I finally set up online banking and moved almost all money to Colossal, left only $5 in saving. Because Colossal earns 3%.
May be I am wrong, I don’t know, may be I should left there some “share”.
Did you receive your debit card?

Just signed up for me and my wife. Applications are in review. Thanks for the post!

J

Just a note since I and friends have done this multiple times, it IS just an ACH. So you can transfer from any account. Also, if you ask, they can give you a practice check in person for $1 that will trigger the “remote deposit” aspect as well.

Anyone have experience with using a USAA card to fund bank account? I spoke with USAA support and they wouldn’t reduce any cash advance limit. What is the risk?

Alex

Applied, got “pending approval in 1 business day”. BTW, hardest ID verification questions out of any place I applied, not sure which service they are using. I had to use Google Maps and my credit reports and to answer some of those. I guess probably a good thing considering all identity theft happening. But be ready to provide lots of non-obvious info.

Yahooooo

Same here, had to use google maps to answer the question “which is the nearest street to your address”

honey dew
honey dew

Same to me. Even worst – asked about the address I was living 10 years ago!

Also they asked to send copy of the utility bill via email. Did they ask you?

Angie
Angie

Applied online. “We regret we cannot open your account and/or add your name as an owner/signer on an account due to one or more applicants failure to meet requirements.

We also obtained your Chexsystems score and used it in making our credit decision. Your Chexsystems score is a number that reflects the information available in your Chexsystems report related to past debit performance.” Oh well.

Dick Bupkiss
Dick Bupkiss

Bummer. This suggests that you have opened some number of new accounts over the past few years, and that number is greater than what they like to see. It also suggests that they got that info from your Chexsystem report. You can get a copy of this sneaky little report by contacting Chexsystem. If you do (and if it were me, I would), please report back on what your number of new accounts/time period was – it would help others know just how skittish this CU is.

Note to @William Charles – it appears this place is indeed sensitive to Chex inquiries (don’t know exactly how many, but Angie seems to be above their limit). May be worth updating that DP.

I’m lol/12 but my credit score is 753 according to experian and no late payments.

How many banks accounts opened recently, not credit accounts. Chexsystems does not track credit.

New at signing up for bank bonuses. What is meant by an ACH transfer and what may count as one? And does anyone know what a Remote Deposit Capture is?

Anna
Anna

“Automated Clearing House transfer is an electronic money transfer between banks that allows money to be pulled from an account or to be ‘pushed’ online to accounts at other banks” – you link a separate bank account to this account, and transfer to/from. Bill pay done thru the biller’s website (vs bank’s Bill Pay option) should count too.

I’m going to assume Remote Deposit Capture is a mobile deposit thru their app (tho why they don’t phrase it as that commonly known term leaves this only an assumption)
You be you, bank *rolls eyes* 🙂

I saw residents of selected ID counties are eligible too (list on the site, you have to go into application pg 1 to see list).

Also, it pays 3% up to $10k, with no minimum, no monthly fees, and unlimited domestic ATM fee refund up to $4.99. Sweet deal for those of us who don’t have the $15-$25k sitting around for some of the other high interest/minimal hassle checkings options out there.

Based on a post just above, it appears they are indeed Chex sensitive.
