The Offer
- American Express is offering some existing Business Platinum cardholders a spending bonus. Bonus is broken down as follows (spend needs to be completed by 10/15/18):
- Spend $5,000 and receive 25,000 Membership Rewards points
- Spend an additional $5,000 and receive an additional 10,000 Membership rewards points
The Fine Print
- The offer consists of two tiers (the two tiers, collectively, the “Offer”), each of which are subject to the terms and conditions described herein.
First Tier: Earn 25,000 Membership Rewards points after you use your enrolled Card to spend at least $5,000 (the “First Tier Spend Requirement”) on qualifying purchases* between the date you enrolled through 10/15/18 (the “Offer Period”); - Second Tier: Earn an additional 10,000 Membership Rewards points after you use your enrolled Card to spend at least an additional $5,000 (the “Second Tier Spend Requirement”) on qualifying purchases* during the Offer Period.
Our Verdict
First bonus is an extra 5x points on spend and the second bonus is an extra 2x points on spend assuming you spend $5,000/$10,000 exactly. Great deal for those who can hit those spend requirements by 10/15/18. American Express has been trying to crack down on manufactured spending, so I’d be careful purchasing things like gift cards and cash equivalents for this offer. In my 3rd year of card membership, I downgraded this card a few weeks ago (early Jan 2019) down to the Biz Green card… previously had AMEX Plat. I earned 25,000 bonus points from this promo that posted in late September 2018. So AMEX clawed back the 25,000 points, saying this is abuse of their system and when enrolling one of the fine print conditions was that I agree not to product change this card within 1 year of enrollment in this promo. I know this is often the fine print for upgrade bonus offers, but for a targeted promo such as this almost into the 3rd year of card membership? I called back and they said the most they can refund as a courtesy is 3,000 points. Anyone have any info on this? Sounds like a total scam bu AMEX!

When I click through to the link and login I unfortunately just get a blank page that has 2 buttons. 1 for my account, the other for card benefits. I assume this means I’m not targeted?
I got a physical mailer for this offer. My annual fee on this card is due in ~3mo. The fine print says “points will appear on your statement 8-12 weeks after you have met the Spend Requirements for that tier”.
Does it really take this long for points to post?
This is either random or related to renewal coming up. I’m a terrible amex customer. I have every card, only meet MSR and then sock drawer.

Unfortunately not targeted. Then again, I had just signed up for the card 2 weeks ago.

Made a $5k tax payment (to also get the 1.5x points) and just 2 days later, the 25k MR points already posted to my account! I made another $5k tax payment yesterday, so I expect the other 10k points to post in a day or 2.
