The Offer

Direct Link to offer

Some SPG business cardholders are getting the following offer:

  • Get 20,000 bonus SPG points per $10,000 in spend through December 6th. Max 40,000 bonus points when you spend $20,000.

The Fine Print

  • Enroll and earn 20,000 points after each $10,000 you spend in eligible purchases, up to 40,000 total points, starting from the time you complete enrollment through 12/06/2018 (“Purchase Period”).
  • Purchases must be made on your Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express (“Purchase Requirement”) starting from the date you complete your enrollment and ending on 12/06/2018.
  • If you reach the Purchase Requirement, the points will be credited to your loyalty member account 8-12 weeks after 12/06/2018.
  • Purchases may fall outside of the Purchase Period (and therefore not be eligible for points) in some cases, such as a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction. (For example, if you buy goods online, the purchase date may be the date the goods are shipped.)
  • This offer is only available to the Basic Card Member; however, eligible purchases made by Additional Card Members will contribute to the Purchase Requirement.
  • Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of traveler’s checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or purchases of any cash equivalents.
  • Eligible purchases to meet the purchase requirement are for goods and services minus returns and other credits.
  • To receive the points, your Card Account must not be cancelled or past due at the time of fulfillment.
  • American Express reserves the right to modify or revoke offer at any time.
  • The points you may earn during the Purchase Period as part of this offer are in addition to any other points you may earn from using your Card.
  • For questions regarding your Card Account, please call the number on the back of your Card.

Our Verdict

Nice offer if you were targeted, makes the SPG card relevant again for everyday spend given that you’ll be earning 4x points on all purchases if you spend exactly $10k or $20k. There’s a similar offer out there as well for the SPG personal card with a spend bonus of between 15,000 – 30,000. Both of these offers are targeted/YMMV, sign in and see if Amex accepts you for the offer.

I spent $10k (2x) at Simon Mall. Statement closed. No bonus points. Boo hoo.

Awful.
Think of putting $20,000 spend on four – six or seven different cards that need bonuses.
These promos keep going up and up and up. Five years from now it’ll be, “Spend $100,000 to get a free night’s stay at a Marriott.”
nope.

An offer like this shouldn’t replace a new card bonus, but rather supplement it. So it isn’t for everyone, but in this day and age not everybody has the ability or desire to get 6 or 7 new accounts in the next 3 months.

Targeted for 20k after $10k spend (up to 40k points max). So thats one free night at a solid upper tier hotel, but with a $40k spend requirement? I’ll probably pass

Is it SPG points or Marriott Rewards? Pretty awful spend bonus right away but it goes from being bad to truly worthless.

I think this offer is very weak, considering the current AMEX SPG card earning structure. Better than nothing of course.

if you can ms the spending without getting clawback thatd be a good deal

Well that’s a very giant “IF” there. Amex definitely is actively watching for MS and in almost all cases, they will see it and they will deny you any bonus points, such as are attached to this offer. This may be a decent deal for someone who can do that much organic spending quickly, but for anyone who is thinking about a trip to the mall or other well known MS avenues, fuggedaboudit – Amex knows your game, they’re watching, and they will RAT you out easily.

how is this weak, you are essentially earning 1.33 spg/$. That is better than the old SPG earning

Except that those are Mariott points, and you could convert 1 SPG points to 3 Mariott points before

40k pts. almost enough for 1 night somewhere decent. Marriott sucks and they ruined SPG and theres really no other way to say it

The fact is that it’s massively easier to earn Marriott points than it was Star points.

A platinum elite + 75 member at Starwood who spent $10k at hotels with the SPG Amex earned 60,000 points–40k from stays and 20k from the CC.

A Platinum Elite +75 at Marriott who spends $10k at hotels with the AMEX or Chase earns 235,000 Marriott points–175,000 from stays and 60,000 from CC spend. Nearly 4x as many.

In addition you get United transfers with a 10% bonus vs a 50% nerf, 1:1 transfers from AMEX and Chase, keep your 5th night free benefit, and basically guaranteed to have the hotel brand available wherever you travel.

Unless you had very specific travel habits with tons of corporate spend, SPG was way too much work to get any sort of meaningful reward.

My 2 cents.
