Should You Apply For The Two SPG Cards On The Same Day?

As you know, the American Express SPG cards have the highest bonus ever at 35,000 points ($3,000 spend for personal & $5,000 for business). I’ve seen this question asked multiple times in different places, so I thought I’d answer it. Should you apply for both of these cards on the same day?

The simple answer is: no, no you should not. Now, let me give you the longer answer to explain why. The main reason why people want to apply for multiple cards from the same issuer in the same day, is that sometimes the hard inquiries will be combined into a single hard inquiry.

Unfortunately the rules for American Express limit you to one credit card application per day, you can apply for multiple charge cards in a single day or a combination of one credit card and one charge card (or even multiple charge cards). The SPG cards are both credit cards, so you won’t be approved for both in a single day.

The other thing to keep in mind is that you can have a maximum of four American Express issued credit cards at one time. Again, this limit doesn’t apply to charge cards (or American Express credit cards that are issued by a third party like Wells Fargo). So if you already have three American Express credit cards, then you’ll only get approved for one of the SPG cards anyway.
