Can’t you just buy a $200 amtrak ticket and then cancel it?

Isn’t it best to always take a UR offer over this one, since URs transfer 1:1 to Amtrak? Even with the 5% redemption bonus, 18k is way less than other UR offers.

Thanks for linking to my Amtrak posts, I also have Part 4: Bedrooms at Night, Showers, Parlour Car, and Movie Theater (http://travelwithgrant.com/2014/10/15/amtrak-coast-starlight-trip-part-4-bedrooms-showers-parlour-car-and-movie-theater/) and Part 5: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner in the Dining Car and Parlour Car (http://travelwithgrant.com/2014/10/15/amtrak-coast-starlight-trip-part-5-breakfast-lunch-and-dinner-in-the-dining-car-and-parlour-car/).

The 18,000 point sign up bonus doesn’t sound that tempting to me, especially when all of the other Chase credit cards have 50,000+ point sign up offers.

What are your plans to complete the $200 Amtrak travel? I wonder if buying a $200 Amtrak Gift Card would qualify: http://www.amtrakvacations.com/rail_vacations/gift-cards/

Does it say that you can’t resell the gift cards? I would think Ebay would be an option.
