[Expired] 4x Fuel Points on Mastercard Gift Cards at Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s [9/1-9/7]

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s (page 10)

  • Get 4x fuel points on the purchase of Mastercard gift cards at Giant, Stop&shop, and Martin’s

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 9/1 through 9/7 (starts Friday, 9/1)
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying
  • “We now accept credit cards for the purchase of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards”

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1. (Giant PA and Martins might expire at the end of the following month.)
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included. (Giant PA and Martins might only be valid at their own gas stations.)
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

4x is great, just be aware that many have had fraud issues with these Mastercard gift cards, and you’ll want to liquidate fast to minimize the risk.

For each tank of gas you’ll need over the next month, buy a $375 in Mastercard gift cards to get $1.50 off the tank. If you’ll need 4 tanks, buy $1,500 worth. Max of $5,000 can be purchased in a day. They’ll copy your driver license number for purchases of $2,000 or more. Time to pull out those grocery credit cards.

Can anyone that has done this particular instance of this promotion confirm that the system are correctly giving the 4x gas points on the variable load MC’s? I’ve never had issues with the VGC’s, but the MC’s always seem to code improperly at my S&S (at least the first couple days until they fix it)… apparently they claim that it works for the fixed dollar amount MC’s, but the variable ones don’t always trigger.. of course they admit that it’s their mistake and fix it for me, but my store is already sick of me and I’d prefer not to have to go through the hassle with them… so can anyone confirm it is coding correctly for $500 MC’s? Thanks!

I’ve bought three so far, they seem to be working as advertised.

I’m having problems lately with these MCGC going to MO at Walmart even using the cancel button trick. I will try them at USPS, but you can also cycle them at the grocery store to just gain cheap gas. I would advise not cycling same day at same store though.

Is there any downside to recycling to gain fuel points using the purchased card?. I have been doing this every other day for all these gas deals so far.

Just missing out on reward points or cash back through credit card spend. If that doesn’t interest you for whatever reason, then nothing.

These can be liquidated at stop and shop FYI just like visa. Seems to be confusion about this. Both MetaBank and USBank GC are coded for their POS. Obviously don’t buy it at CS and try to liquidate right then and there.

Remember not to throw away the packaging. It has the pin printed inside, unlike OVGC.

Do the US Bank MCs have a default pin like the last four digits of metabank cards?

Yes the PIN is on a piece of paper stuck to the card.

I just called two Giant stores in the Delaware area, and according to the CSR the mastercards will not count towards Fuel Point. Are any other location getting the same feedback.

that is general term because no gift cards earn fule points. But whenever they have promo like this, it works. Just go to store and check the ad or go online for that store a nd see the ad. If it says 4x in the ad for mastercard, it will work. No question/talk. Just go , buy and see the points on your receipt.

What makes the MCGCs more susceptible to fraud than VGC? I have seen this mentioned several times but fortunately never experienced it the few times I purchased them.

I think U.S. Bank uses pretty much consecutive numbers, while Metabank’s numbers are more random.

Just in time, thank you! I was at Giant (PA) yesterday and there was a sign for 5x gas when buying Lowes gift cards (and one other store, but I can’t remember). Glad I waited for this.

Are any of the MCs sold at Stop & Shop/Giant unloadable with bluebird?
