American Express Partners With Paypal/Venmo To Split Charges From Within Amex App

Via Travelwithgrant, American Express has added a feature to their app which lets you split a charge in the Amex login. No, you can’t push part of the cost to someone else’s Amex card, it’s just a Paypal/Venmo payment request. The neat thing is that you can make the request from within the Amex app once your Amex account is linked to your Venmo or Paypal.

The feature was initially announced over a year ago, as part of a broader Amex-Paypal partnership; I haven’t heard of this feature going live until now. I don’t see the option on the Amex website, presumably it’s an app-only feature.

Nothing really groundbreaking, but certainly an interesting feature. You can read a full walk-through on how to link accounts in this Travelwithgrant post.

FAQs: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/services/amex-peer-to-peer/send-and-split/frequently-asked-questions/

** I wonder if adding money to the spend account would count towards min spend requirements? If not, it still appears to be an easy way of getting free “cash advances”? **

1. Add money from your linked American Express card to your AmEx Send account. It will come in as a regular purchase on your card. There is no fee and no rewards but maybe satisfy min spend requirements?

“No, there is no fee to add money to your Amex Send Account. When you add money to your Send Account, it will appear as a charge on your American Express Card billing statement. The charge is subject to the APR for purchases, just like other purchases on your Card Account based on the terms of your Card Member Agreement. This is not a cash advance. The charge to your Card does not earn any rewards.”

2. Send money from your Send account to a friend who has PayPal or Venmo. There is no fee.
“American Express and Venmo do not charge a fee to send money using your Send Account. PayPal will only charge a fee if you send money to a non-US recipient.”

Can you still gain points with Venmo payments?

This has been there for about 3 months now. I remember signing up for this in October

Same. 3 months in, still haven’t used it. I just don’t split that many transactions. Seems like a good use for college roommates trying to be frugal by splitting shareables but how many college students have an Amex CC?

Lets not pretend Amex is exclusive anymore. Amex has become the loose slut on campus over the past few years.

I split transactions when I go out to eat with some friends (because they pay with debit cards or pay cash). I usually just tell them to Cash App me though. I don’t have that many friends that use Venmo or PayPal so unless AMEX partners with CashApp, I’ll probably never use this feature.

Saw this option when I logged into my Amex app yesterday.
