I stay in a lot of IHG properties, but I rarely pay room rates for them (I use points from sign up bonuses or buy them when they’re sold at a half penny or less). But $25 off $100 might be useful this summer, especially at a Candlewood where rates tend to be pretty reasonable (Candlewoods now have surprisingly nice rooms, especially if you get upgraded as a credit card elite — one of America’s best “secret” travel tips). But this would only be a deal if I could earn a bunch of IHG bonus points by buying a room. Are there any good point promos at IHG now?

Candlewood in Richmond VA was awesome. I can’t believe I wasted so much money staying at the Westin across from it until the last week.

90% bonus ends tonight, 100% bonus just finished on June 30. The 90% bonus is not that good, purchasing points for .6 cpp. Much better at .5 cpp with 100% bonus, should be back in a few months.

Right. It was a good deal to buy points earlier this week. I bought 100,000 for $500 on an AMEX card which triggered the (now also expired) $25 for $500 transactions AMEX offer statement credit. But they seem to sell them for this price every few months. The risk is that they’ll devalue the currency of course, so don’t buy more than you can use in the next few months. It is generally better than EVER paying normal room rates. In this case, however, $25 off $100 on a REGULAR ROOM RATE might be competitive in some limited circumstances, and could be a good deal if IHG had a good bonus promo for buying rooms. I do not believe they currently do, however. So I’ve just loaded the AMEX offer and will wait to see if a deal pops up.

And of course, paying with points, there is no tax! That can be a 15-20 savings right there.

You asked:

> Are there any good point promos at IHG now?

Only starting with your third stay after you register. You earn nothing extra on your first stay, 2x points on your second stay, and 3x points on stays after that:

https://www.ihg.com/content/us/en/deals/member-offers/3x/tc

So you obviously have to find cheap one-night stays for your first stay and perhaps even your second stay, before it starts paying off better than average. And they have be paid stays, points or points+cash stay don’t count toward the first or second stays in this promotion.
