Applied For The SPG Cards Before The 30k Bonus? Ask To Be “Matched”

In case you didn’t know, American Express has increased the sign up bonus on both the Personal & Business versions of the Starwoods Preferred Guest credit card to 30,000 points. This is great because the bonus is usually only 25,000 points (30,000 usually being offered once a year around August), they’ve also added some new benefits and increased the annual fee. It’s not so great if you recently applied under the 25,000 point bonus. I had a number of people ask if American Express would match the 30,000 offer and give them the extra 5,000 points, I said that American Express usually don’t match but it’s always worth a try anyway.

Reader, David let me know that he was able to successfully get an additional 5,000 points as a courtesy:

FYI, there are multiple reports of AMEX “matching” recent SPG apps to the new 30K offer. I use “” because AMEX doesn’t call it a match, they just call it a courtesy 5K SPG points. I called in last night for my business SPG application 2 weeks ago, and they gave me the 5K. I then had my wife call in; she applied for personal SPG in late April/early May, and they gave her 5K as well. I think AMEX must have changed their policy. I got the personal SPG in 2012, about 2 weeks before the 30K offer, and they wouldn’t do anything about it.

I don’t really care what American Express calls it, I’m just happy to hear that readers were able to get the extra 5,000 points. There is no guarantee that this will work for you and I’d recommend you doing it sooner rather than later (agents are much more likely to approve a request when they haven’t approved 300 similar requests earlier in the day).

Thank you for the post!!!! Opened personal card in March. Got 25K. Just called in after seeing this post. Was offered 3K.

Called to say that I received the 25K bonus in May, and that I would like my bonus offer to reflect the difference between that at the current bonus (5K). They gave me 10K.

Called up & they wouldn’t do 5000 but credited 3000. Better than nothing.

Chat rep said they can’t match. Called back of card, was put on a longggg hold 20 min+ eventually I hung up lol. Called again and rep could only open a case about it. Oh well. Got the business card 4 weeks back still spending $3K for the 25Kpoints

Signed up in 06/2015, called and got 5000 points with ease! Thanks DoC!

Called 3 times for my card with no luck. Made my wife call in and she mentioned that she received an email to refer for 30,000 but had only received 25,000 and requested a match. They offered 3000. So I gave it another shot and mentioned the email as she had and after a hold she gave me 5,000. Well worth our 20 minutes of time for 8,000 points. Mentioning an email offer seems to be the key, at least for us. Make sure to HUCA as it took 4 calls for me but got the 5k. Good luck.

I made the call, and was surprised to receive a 6000 point match up! Exceeds expectations, best way to spend 5 mins IMHO 🙂

Another data point: I signed in to my account online and used the “Live Chat” feature. I was able to get 3,000 points as a courtesy. Took about 5 minutes. At first the rep said they can’t match, but I simply asked for 5,000 courtesy points. She was able to do 3,000 points. I wasn’t going to argue!

If you are already maxing out your number of amex cards, is it preferable to apply for a new card and, assuming approval, then let them offer to cancel one of your existing cards, or should you cancel first, wait a while (how long?) then apply for new?

Same date, no issue. Did this twice.
PS, if you maxed out the limit of 4, your new CC app wouldn’t go thru AMEX system – they won’t pull your credit.

Oh, i mean, cancel first. And apply afterwards. And remember to move the line of credit on the old card to another card account.

If you apply first, you’d have to call two departments to get the new card, firstly the old card’s CS to close it; then the app dept to process. Just a bit extra hassle.

Doc – can a husband and wife both get new business SPG cards for the same business with the same EIN at the same time?

Wonderful, I’d try to call in and see what I’m offered. My past experience with AMEX and SPG is that they are quite generous in extending courtesy points. Examples includes:
1) an AMEX GC order was declined due to BS, called in to check on my card status yet didn’t see any fraud alerts incurred. I told the rep that I meant to put that $3K on the card for bla bla bla (i forgot). Then 3K starpoints were offered.
2) random call to discuss benefits of SPG and Chase Ink as an airline transfer card, told the rep I doubt I’d keep the card for a third year. Was given 7K points to compensate the annual fee
3) another 3K points for something I forgot…

I guess this time, with the annual fee increase along with the sign-up bonus, I should get an extra 5K points no problem.
Just remember to call your CC rep once a while and ask for promo, there are always some surprise.
