Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Aspiration checking works on a pay what you want model, so you can choose anywhere between $0 and $20 per month.

Early Account Termination Fee

I wasn’t able to find a fee schedule, so I’m unsure if there is any early account termination fee or not.

Our Verdict

The bonus isn’t mentioned on the Aspiration checking site, but the Penny Hoarder is a large website so I doubt they would be running a fake offer. We’ve talked about the Aspiration account before, it does a lot of things well but doesn’t really excel in any particular category. Probably worth doing for most people, because of that we will be adding this to our best bank bonus page.

good deal, cb site have promo but dont think it will stack. fyi dont put more money in then you like to lose as per online post it seems they are not very good at running a bank, unauthorized fund pull from the bank account, shut down the account, very bad customer service, and it goes on.

Good reminder, best to read the grayed out fine print(s) and keep an eye on this account.

No hard pull. Signed up P1 & P2 a couple weeks ago. No CC funding. Funding was done through Plaid. I did $10 from Capital One 360. Not sure what happens if you don’t link through Plaid… Probably traditional trial deposits thru ACH. I will look later for ETF.

Gadget

Couldn’t find an ETF. Since they work on a “pay what you want” motto/manta, I will choose $0 and see what they say.

Mimi
Mimi

I chose $1, will that be pulled out monthly from the external bank account we linked? It’s too early to tell if they’ll pull this as my “monthly fee”.

Did you hear back from them about the $0, meaning you don’t want to pay a fee?

Gadget

I’m sorry, I sort of meant that as a joke that I was going to see what they say. I will find out when I close the account. Since their monthly fee is optional, maybe ETF is too. I am pretty fee averse, so I set my monthly fee at zero.

Real DD hits Friday. I did $100.

Do NOT recommend. Awful account approval process, even worse than Citi Bank’s. I applied on Apr. 23 and it’s still not opened. They can keep their $100, because they surely look like they need it to wipe their own behinds with.

I signed up for this via Swagbucks a few weeks ago when they were offering 2000 SB and $50 cash from Aspiration. Met the requirements in a few days. The terms state that the $50 bonus will be paid to the Aspiration account on the 1st of the month following the DD, but no bonus appeared on 5/1, and now I’m getting the runaround from customer service.

The 2000 SB is pending, so at least that’s something. But it also confirms that the offer tracked successfully, yet Aspiration isn’t paying their portion.

I also cannot activate the debit card because their phone system is all automated, and you get trapped in an endless loop. Very unimpressed with Aspiration so far; just seems like there are way too many kinks to work out at this point.

Can you share what you did for a DD?

real employer DD of $50. I’m paid weekly and it’s very easy to change my DD.

No amount for the DD requirement is listed… Will $1 suffice?

And I haven’t found any DPs yet on how picky they are about ‘DD’s.

It says $10 minimum for DD.

Set up and receive a direct deposit (minimum $10) from your paycheck or government benefits by July 31, 2019.

Note this is not itself a bank, but they do say they store your deposits in banks with pass-through FDIC insurance. Presumably one more hoop to jump through in the event that this company goes belly-up.

Soft pull for sure…I opened an account 3 weeks back

Platform for this bank is awful and still no joint accounts (been asking for years). Decent bonus though.

Not judging the deal but the dates in “fine print” are different than the blog post.

Fine print says DD by 6/28, blog body says 7/31
Fine print says bonus deposited by 7/15, blog body says 8/15

Any idea of anything that counts as DD? I don’t see any datapoints at all. 🙁

No datapoints yet. I am trying Alliant, Chase, Discover, & Paypal (thank you Miss Jenn for the instructions re how to do paypal!) missjenniferd1

Alliant doesn’t work. I already tried adding

What do you mean when you say Alliant doesn’t work? Does it get rejected or denied or do you mean that it doesn’t code properly on the Aspiration side?

There is no hard pull. Soft pull from Equifax only.

Also, looks like no ETF based on the disclosures I read through.

Easy sign-up process…just speculation here, but I think my first try on the DD is going to be Chase. It seems like Chase checking account has triggered bonuses for other online banks in the past such as Chime and Varo. It might be best to do a six shooter approach to this account as the bonus won’t post until August so might want to try a few banks before the July deadline.

These guy have gone down hill since they switched the back end bank. I used them as my primary checking account for a couple years and then they moved from Radius to some small credit union in Florida. Many major institutions wouldn’t recognize the new routing and account number so it messed up a lot of my auto payments (credit cards, utility payments, car payments). Also, deposits would take about a week to show up. Customer service was awful when I was trying to get everything fixed.

Just be aware this bonus is most likely a one time thing as there is something in the faq that states once you close accounts you can’t reopen the same product again. I have an account and was told that I would be unable to reopen the Spend and Save again if I closed it. I’m a bit mad at myself for signing up too early before the bonuses were a thing….

Ann
Ann

“once you close accounts you can’t reopen the same product again”

That seems like a poor business decision. You want to make the *bonuses* once per account type, okay, but why force the *person* to be a one-time customer? (Not that readers of this site would be likely to come back without another bonus anyway, but talking about the general public.)

doc
doc

Makes sense to me. It’s a great way to prevent bonus gaming. Plus, anyone who is serious about opening a bank account isn’t already planning to close said account.

Midnight

Quote from FAQ that was also in email sent to me on April 23rd:

“banking account closures are permanent, and once closed, the account cannot be reopened (this includes reapplying).”

I can’t find it again. FAQ is changed possibly as the page about account closures was updated on May 11th. Not sure if they changed their minds on this or if the rule still applies.

I’ve used this bank for 3 years as my primary checking and I love it. No ATM fees (and no fees, in general, to have it open) and high-interest rate with no minimum in the account.

Matt
Matt

which account does the DD have to post to, spend or savings?

Gadget

Matt tt Doesn’t specify, so either would probably work. Spend is similar to a checking, and that account would make the most sense. It’s what I am doing…

Hey Will, I got a paypal credit card offer that i think may be new and was wondering if you would be able to do an article on it? I could send u more information over email

My wife and I each just opened an account. Direct Deposit has been set-up as well. Just waiting for the $10 DD to hit and hopefully the $100 will follow soon.

Which bank are you using for “DD”?

John Doe
John Doe

Discover Bank for the initial $10 funding deposit but I literally set up my paycheck DD so $10 would go into this account. So I’m waiting till next Friday for the $10 to hit the account.

Fortunately my employer uses a paycheck system that allows us to flexibly change around the DD allocation and the change gets reflected instantly. That’s how I’ve been able to meet most of the bank bonus DD requirements.

I got an email for the $100 offer instead of doing it from the penny hoarder link.

*Offer Terms and Conditions: Offer is only valid for new Aspiration customers. Offer only applies to the original recipient of this email and is non-transferable. Account must be created with this recipient email address. I’m confused, does the “DD” need to be to the “Spend” or “Save” account?

Gadget

It is not specified. I am sending mine to the Spend… reason being it’s the most logical, as most people do not Save the bulk of their paycheck. Their Direct Deposit form, the one to give to your employer, has the ability to check-block either Spend or Save. If you don’t like that answer, I’d suggest contacting Aspiration.

Is this still in effect? I see some wrote an end date to apply of 5/15?

Nick

Just to resolve the ambiguity above: There’s no credit card funding at opening. You have to pull the funds from a different bank account.
