Our Verdict

Standard bonus is 20,000 points but we’ve seen 30,000 points and 20,000 + $100 before as well. In terms of the value of Amtrak points they are as follows:

  • Non-Acela tickets points are worth 2.9¢ each
  • Acela tickets points are worth 2.56¢ cent

Personally I think the recent 30,000 point offer is much better due to the Amtrak point values above but others might disagree. For more information on best uses and valuation read this post. This can be a valuable bonus for those that take advantage of/enjoy train travel. If you have any questions about Bank of America credit cards I’d recommend reading this post first. I will not be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses due to the fact that 30,000 points was so recently offered.

With the current waves of plane crashes may be we should ask for our government to invest more in rail travel.

You mean how we’ve had no fatal domestic airline crashes in a decade? There’s only been 5 fatal domestic crashes since 9/11.

a annual fee on this card is laughable…

The companion pass can more than offset the annual fee each year – useful if you live on the NE Corridor.

Does the companion pass work for point trips, or just for ones paid with money?

Just money. But is valid for a round trip. Pretty easy to get a RT for more than the $79 AF.

Um, for those that use the points enough and value them at that 2.5 cents each… This card blows the water out of all other cards, other than very specific categories. And I’d probably drop 3% cards if I valued their points like that. That would make this a 7.5 Amtrak, 5% travel, and 2.5% everything else card.

Only problem, I don’t use Amtrak.

only if you do enough travel and amtrak to override the annual fee. I agree the 2.5% on everything is good value… but the no annual fee version offers that too. the annual fee version gets an extra 2.5% on travel, so you would need to spend $79/.025= $3160 on travel just to break even (this is of course ignoring the value of the companion pass)
