[Expired] [CA, CO, AZ, NM] BBVA $400 Checking Bonus + $50 Savings Bonus – Available Via Phone & In Branch (Last Day)

Deal has expired, view more bank account bonuses by clicking here

Offer at a glance

  • Maximum bonus amount: $450
  • Availability: Fine print does say only available in ‘California, Colorado, Arizona & New Mexico’
  • Direct deposit required: Yes, $2,500+
  • Additional requirements: Use promo code
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft
  • ChexSystems: Unknown
  • Credit card funding: Normally $500 per account, but not sure how it works in branch or via phone
  • Monthly fees: None
  • Early account termination fee: One year, bonus forfeit
  • Household limit: None
  • Expiration date: February 10th, 2020

The Offer

  • BBVA Compass is offering a checking bonus of $400 when you complete the following requirements:
    • Either call in (1844-BBVA-USA) or visit a branch and use the promo code WESTWB2020
    • Receive a direct deposit of at least $2,500 by April 30th, 2020 (if you receive a direct deposit of $500 – $2,499.99 you’ll receive a bonus of $50)
  • You can also get a $50 savings bonus when you open a new qualifiyng savings account and have a balance of at least $500 on April 30th, 2020

The Fine Print

  • You must be a new BBVA consumer checking customer who has not had a BBVA consumer checking account open within the last 12 months or closed due to negative balance to be eligible for the bonus.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

If you live in AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL NM or TX then the best account to open is the BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking as this has no monthly fees to worry about. Otherwise open the Clearconnect checking account which also has no monthly fees to worry about. There is a $3 fee on ClearConnect for paper statements, so make sure you opt for paperless statements.

ClearChoice Saving: has a $15 quarterly fee if the balance falls below $500. ClearConnect Saving has no monthly fees.

Early Account Termination Fee

Account needs to be kept open for one year or bonus is forfeit

Our Verdict

This is much better than the $200 + $50 bonus that is also available. Not sure how difficult it is to open via phone, but definitely think this is a bonus worth doing if you’re eligible (not eligible if you’ve had a BBVA account opened in the last 12 months). Not much time left, but I’ll be adding this to our best checking account bonus page.

Just opened the $250 one a couple days ago. Not in the listed states for this though.

That happened to me with WF, time to get some pay back.

Exactly. I’m guessing you’re like me and just opened the $200+$50 a week or two ago?

Same. I just never know the best time to open an account with a bank. There’s always that change there’ll be a better offer. Granted, I live in Texas, so I probably wouldn’t have been able to get this promo anyway.

Does this require at least one direct deposit of $2500+, or do multiple direct deposits summing to 2500+ in the same month work?

Would like to know this as well.

Have the same question. Hope someone has an answer for the poor 🙁

Wondering too

they says need to be in one direct deposit.

I asked the rep, it’s accumulated deposits.

I just called them. It has to be one DD of $2500+. They only want wealthy clientele 🙂

Jo

Rep told me 1 deposit. If you get paid monthly, $2500 direct deposits means you’re making $30k/year. Pretty sure that doesn’t qualify as wealthy. I wouldn’t even categorize you as wealthy if you made $2,500/week. Now $2,500/day… that’s a different story.

what counts as dd for this bank?

Well, that’s nice. The customer service line is closed right now and only available M-F during business hours (CST).

Looks like they’ll be fielding a lot of calls on Monday. Not me unfortunately since I just closed my account in April of 19.

Was told this promo is for CA, CO, AZ, and NM.

Who told you that? A customer service agent from the bank?

Yes.

HoKo

Thanks. Were you able to convince them to proceed with the account opening or they refused to do so?

I am in one of those states so am eligible. Family member in another state called and was told no, not eligible for the 400 but was eligible for a 200 promo for that region instead. So does not seem available nationwide. But YMMV

Credit card funding didn’t work for me. I opened it today in branch and was trying with CSR , it was being coded as cash advance so the funding got declined. According to the banker they updated some systems and credit card funding is being coded as cash advance. Banker also told this offer expires on feb 10 but Customer Service agent on phone mentioned that this is available till Feb 28. No clue

It’s almost universal that credit card funding only works with online applications, in-branch will code as cash advance. Not a surprise and not specific to BBVA.

Anyone know if having an account with Simple means it wouldn’t qualify you? Simple is affiliated with partner bank of theirs. My tax form showing my interest i got said “BBVA”

If you had a Denizen or Simple account within the last 12 months (backend with BBVA), would you qualify for this bonus?

So effectively this is a once in two years bonus.

One year to keep account open.
One year to let the history roll off

Answer then to questions above in the fine print…. to get the $400, appears “at least one” of the qualifying deposits must be $2,500 or greater. (not cumulative then)

So I guess they are closed in the weekends, this leaving Monday the only available date.
