Chase Ultimate Rewards: 50% Transfer Bonus To Marriott (1:1.5)

The Offer

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards program is offering a 50% transfer bonus when you transfer to Marriott. Normally you can transfer at a rate of 1:1 and under this promotion that increases to 1:1.5

The Fine Print

  • Valid until 8/31/21

Our Verdict

This is the first Chase transfer bonus we’ve seen for Marriott. You can view a full list of current and past transfer bonuses by clicking here. Personally I think this transfer bonus is a huge waste of time as Chase points are so much more valuable than Marriott points. There are some probably fringe use cases, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend transferring unless you have a set plan for what to do with the points.

Don’t have any Ultimate Rewards points but this may not be a bad deal. Recently booked a 3 night stay at a category 3 hotel for 60,000 Marriott pts. They wanted $303 a night! which would equate to 60,000 pts = ~$900 or 1.5c per pt.

Like many here, I tend to mostly ignore Marriott and their loyalty program (and, frankly, they may be the better for it — I’m trying to get outsized value, and Marriott is good at making sure people don’t). That said, it’s possible at this special conversion rate you could be in a situation where 1.5 points could be a reasonable transfer. This would be a situation where a specific Marriott property might be underpriced, and there aren’t good chain alternatives (where you could redeem for higher value in another program). Generally speaking, it’s best to have points available in as many hotel programs as you can, because you never know which chain will have the best property (from a cost, location and quality standpoint). I actually don’t understand why anyone would want to be particularly loyal to one hotel brand (and I say that as a Hyatt Globalist, Honors Diamond and IHG Spire).

This is a loaded question that would require multiple pages of “if this, then this” statements. Maybe look for some YouTube videos or visit Frequent Miler’s blog?

What is the best value to redeem your chase rewards points?

It obviously depends on the person, but if you stay at hotels, the greatest and most unique value is usually redeeming them with Hyatt.

So this is like 1 Membership Rewards -> 0.5 SPG. Were we very excited about such a transfer rate at the time? Not really.

What redemption are you considering? And how many miles did you need?

Had to finish off a trip for 3, nabbed some SFO-HND on JAL in J, didn’t need too many more.

Is that 40,000 UR -> 60,000 bonvoy -> 25,000 AA? Sounds like a bad value unless you only needed a few miles to redeem for a good value.

There could be some situations where you find a web special award that fits your exact needs where that is worth it.
