Our Verdict

Standard offer is 50,000 points with the annual fee waived, I believe, so this offer gives you 10,000 points for paying the annual fee. Not a big deal, but some people will prefer this offer. This isn’t the best offer we’ve seen as there has been 60,000 with annual fee waived in the past as part of a referral deal (that one did require an extra $1k spend). This offer is being promoted today by affiliates; I stripped down an affiliate link to get the link above. Support your favorite blogger by using their affiliate link; we don’t use them on DoC.

A reader notes that a better plan could be to do the regular 50,000 points offer which has the annual fee waived, and then ask Citi for a match to this public 60,000 points bonus. Hopefully, that will work.

Keep in mind, the bonus is not available if you’ve opened or closed a Citi Rewards+, Preferred, Premier, or Prestige card within the past 24 months. As always make sure you read these things everybody should know about Citi credit cards before applying. We’ll add this to our list of the best credit card sign up bonuses.

You can just do the 50k offer and then match to this. Unlike AA, this match is alive and well.

When you match do you pay the annual fee?

The Premier card has a really broad definition of ‘travel’ btw. It’s much more useful as a daily spender for people who really are shuffling around planes, trains, parking garages, tollbooths, hotels etc.

Chuck I received an email this morning saying the Citi ThankYou Preferred was being switched from Visa to Mastercard. Not sure if noteworthy for a post. I first got this card way back in 1996, it’s been product changed by Citi a couple times over the years, but had always been a Visa.

“Your Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card is changing from Visa® to Mastercard®”

This is double sucky, when Citi changes a card number it can reset your TY bonus clock and there is nothing they are willing to do about it 🙁

50k to 60k matching is alive. So don’t use this offer…

What is the procedure to request for the match ? What is the match period after applying for the card ?

Chong786

1) You can do it thru chat .

2) usually within 90 days

Thanks. Will calling the number on the back of the card also work for matching?

Well I did a dumb thing– I saw the 60k offer on OMAAT and applied/approved immediately.

Then I came on here and read about the 50k + no annual fee, plus asking Citi to add another 10k points– f’n brilliant! So I was feeling really stupid and reached out to Citi via their website chat explaining the situation and seeing if they’d waive the annual fee on the Premier, but they said they couldn’t do it and instead would add 10k points to my existing Prestige account.

So today I’m out $95 annual fee but have basically locked in 70,000 TYP, so I’m good with it.

You explained to them that you should have applied for a different offer with the intent of having them match it to get out of the AF…? Did you point them to blogs and websites that describe how to game their rewards system too?

Michael
Michael

Hey JF– no, I just said a friend of mine applied for the 50k offer and got the extra 10k points by asking for it. Citi knows these blogs and websites exist, their marketing teams are the ones that notify the bloggers about these deals; for every one of us churners there are dozens of real people who get a card, keep it for years and put all their spend on it. This isn’t some private Facebook group or points conference, it’s a site that anybody can find on Google.

So you’re a proud supporter of predatory credit card blogs, yes?

Michael
Michael

Hey Lantean,

Absolutely. I’m all in favor of supporting entrepreneurs who give quality reviews of J cabins on airlines I want to fly and generally keep their reviews unbiased (i.e. the ones who aren’t Bonvoy advocates). Most of these guys started blogging without ever intending to profit from it, and now that they are actually making money– good for them! I realize it’s a delicate issue, but my view is that it doesn’t cost you any extra to use their affiliate links. So might as well support content that you enjoy if it doesn’t cost you anything to do so. Would you rather just sign up directly through the bank so that nobody gets the referral cash? I’m sure Citi corporation and its shareholders really appreciate you lol.

I tried to do something similar today, and got shut down. was told there are no offers for waiver.

Since they award 10 points for a 50 cent purchase on this card can you continuously reload amazon gift card and rack up points?

Approved and applied via mobile, and it specifically said annual fee waived first year (and it was for 60k). Brought up same link on laptop and the waive language wasn’t there! Hopefully it’s really waived.

It seems like they may have updated the “standard offer” to 60k with $95AF on their site.

Have 4 Citi cards already, one DC, simplicity, AAdvantage, Costco. Just got costco a few months ago, is 4 too many to try for another one?

Does anyone have an active link for the 50,000 offer (waived fee)? The one posted here is the 60,000 offer

I lost my preferred card last year and got a replacement with different number. Does this reset 24-month? Thanks.

What’s the deal – the 50k offer dead everywhere now? No match possible without the 50k offer? anyone?

How does redemption for travel work with this card? Is it any travel purchase with this card or does it have to be booked through their travel portal?
