The Fine Print

  • To qualify for the $150 bonus you must open your first new personal checking account between 5/6/17 and 6/9/17 and have at least 1 single direct deposit of $500 or more post to your new checking account within 60 days of account opening.

  • $150 Bonus will be deposited into your qualifying checking account within 90 days after the first qualified direct deposit has posted and will be labeled as “Balance Builder Bonus.”
  • One bonus per customer.
  • Bonus will be reported to the IRS.

Avoiding Fees

  • One Deposit Checking Account: $9.95 fee is waived with any deposit (according to this comment they really do many any deposit, even a transfer from another Citizens Bank account will trigger this)
  • Citizens Bank Platinum Checking: $25 fee is waived with $25,000 in combined deposits
  • Citizens Bank Platinum Plus Checking: $25 fee is waived with $25,000 in combined deposits & either $5,000 total deposits posted to the primary checking account before the end of your statement period OR $10,000 average daily checking balance

As far as I know there is no early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

It’s annoying that this bonus is in branch and requires a direct deposit for the bonus, at least any deposit will keep the account fee free. That being said it’s probably still a good option for those that live near a branch as we do have some datapoints on what counts as a direct deposit. They have offered a similar $150 bonus online in the past as well. I’ll be adding this to our best checking promos page, but it won’t be one of the top bonuses listed.

Big thanks to reader, Don who let us know. Please consider sharing bank bonuses with this site so we can make it even better.

  1. Daniel says:

    No supermarket branches in DC

  2. sa says:

How do you fund with CC if you have to open in branch? Thanks.

  3. red says:

You can get this from USPS moving package and open online. (At least in NJ)

  4. Peter says:

Any incoming transfer counts as deposit to waive the fee for the One Deposit account, including a recurring $0.01 transfer from a secondary Citizens Bank account.

They are my primary bank. Really no hassle and extremely convenient with branches and ATM’s everywhere. Mobile Deposit and ATM deposit cut-off is 10PM to count as same day with most funds available next day. Mobile Deposit limits of up to $25k per month after account ages and depending on what level you have.

A HUGE plus is their mobile deposit only requires you hold onto the check for 15 days before marking void and shredding. Most others require 60-90 days. No MO mobile deposits, but they are accepted at the ATM (their official bank ATM’s all have check/MO scan and cash deposit capability).

  5. Dave says:

This lying, thieving, bank will never get my business again.
    Careful guys..

  6. Daniel says:

Just a heads up: The header summary state $250+ DD requirement and the terms of this offer are $500. It is accurate in the body of the article.

  7. BankerS says:

Although this is the list of states where you can obtain this-CT, DC, DE, FL, MA, MD, ME, MI, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, VA, VT-Citizens has no branches in DC, FL, MD, ME, NC, SC or VA,

    I work for Citizens Bank

    • Sorry, not entirely sure what this means? You mean they have no supermarket branches or no branches at all? I thought the states I listed are the ones in their drop down menu.

      • parkdanil says:

No branches at all it looks like. I did a google search on locations and there don’t seem to be any for some of the listed states.

The Location Finder does include ATM’s as an option in its search. So those states listed in the drop down menu may not have actual branches, they may just have an ATM machine.

  8. Don says:

I signed up yesterday for the promotion. It looks to be that same amount of effort to receive the bonus and to keep the account fee-free as a Key Bank checking account (although a slightly smaller bonus).

  9. BankerS says:

    Hi William,

Citizens has no Branches at all in these states- DC, FL, MD, ME, NC, or SC. The VA is an Employee Only use branch for employees of our Mortgage Group Operations Center in Glen Allen, VA. Regardless of what our online account opening app may show, if you don’t reside in our footprint of 11 states where we actually have physical branches, you cannot open a deposit account with is online or over the phone.

  10. Adam says:

Signed up in MA supermarket branch yesterday. Took about 20 minutes. I just funded it with cash. Planning to fulfill with a real employer DD, even though some DPs indicate ACH from other banks might also work.

    • Adam says:

Bonus posted 4/19. I ended up doing both Alliant ACH and a real employer DD, so not sure which one triggered it.

  11. Mrs. Gee says:

Any data on whether you really do need to be a first time account holder to get this bonus? Their offer states, “your first new personal checking account “. Is this new language? I’ve gotten bonuses from them at least twice in the past and I’m hoping to get this one as well.
Btw, they have been very easy in the past about DDs. Just about any ACH deposit has qualified.

    • Mrs. Gee says:

I can provide my own DP. Just opened my account. The offer is valid as long as you do not have a current account of any kind and any prior accounts have been closed for at least 6 months. The rep and manager both insisted that the offer is limited to one per household, although I didn’t see that in writing on the offer. They also offered the information that ANY online transfer in to your account will trigger the bonus as a DD.

  12. bmanamex says:

New DP: Vanguard Brokerage works as Direct Deposit
Bonus took 2 months to post

  13. PMartinez says:

Cap360 didnt work as Direct Deposit. Bonus denied.

  14. Ben says:

@Will – Doesn’t help many folks, but FYI Citizen’s sent me a presumably targeted mailer with an alphanumeric code to open a checking account for $400 bonus shortly after moving into a town where they have a branch.

    • How’d they know you moved into a town with a branch?

      • Ben says:

Public record? Getting tons of mailings in general as ‘welcome’ or other ads/offers clearly targeted at our recent move.
        Citizen’s offer includes language like:
“A welcome gift from us to you.”
“Something to help you feel right at home.”

Opened the account online today, approved instantly. $400 is for Platinum Checking, which has a $25/mo fee unless you have combined 25K balance, which I will not. I’ll prob eat fee for a couple months and downgrade to a different checking once bonus posts, still net say 300 at worst. Requires single $500 DD in 60 days. DPs here seem pretty scarce, going to throw a bunch of ACH at it.

      • Kerry says:

also received the $400 offer to open a platinum acct. Lived in the same place for 25 years. Targeted with code number

        • Kevin says:

I received a targeted offer with code number for $250 to open a platinum plus checking account. Lived at the same address for 4 years.

  15. Bob says:

2/14 opened (my self Valentine’s gift lol)
2/26 ACH from Alliant, posted as “Direct Deposit Alliant Cu. Online Wd”
Monthly $1 ACH to avoid fee
    4/19 Bonus posted

Will wait a couple more months before closing! Thanks DoC as always

  16. Frito Pendejo says:

I just got a mailer for one of these for $250 for opening a Platinum Plus account. Going to try Discover and Ally ACH…

    • Frito Pendejo says:

Nevermind. Just noticed this account has $25 fee unless 10k on deposit, and I’m not parking 10k that could be getting 3% apy for months on an uncertain outcome. I hate this bank with a passion anyway.

      • Frito Pendejo says:

Either I commented on the wrong thread or somehow the Premier Checking bonus page got replaced with this in-grocery store one. Disregard…

  17. Don says:

    Deal is back until 6/9/17

It took me 71 day from opening my account to having the bonus post.

If you need to refinance your student loans, they offer the best rates that I have been able to find (2.60% as of 5/8/17). I don’t work for the bank, I am just trying to help my fellow readers.

    • Bob says:

I also saw that rate on the student loans. Do you know what kind of credit you need to get that rate? Did you apply?

      • Don says:

My wife applied before the rates rose recently. Her offer was around 2.35% earlier this year. Her credit score score is right around 800. If your score is lower, you would likely have a slightly higher rate. This was a time consuming process, but it should save us a lot of money in the long run. Make sure to schedule an appointment, as the loan officer was not available everyday at my branch.

The rate is variable and you must have at least $10,000 outstanding to refinance. Also, to get the best rate, you must use the auto-pay feature from a Citizens Bank checking account. She opened a checking account and refinanced her student loans at the same time.

The best rates are for 5 year terms (they also have 10, 15, and 20 year terms, but these all have higher interest rates) and variable interest rates. Fixed rate loans were about double at 4.60% for 5 year terms. There is no pre-payment penalty. She took the 2.35% for 5 years, which is almost 3 time less than her 6.8% rate from Great Lakes.

  18. Frito Pendejo says:

Nice, I have these everywhere near me. I’ll give it a try soon.

  19. Max says:

    Hey Will,

Back on February 23rd, I called them at the number listed on the direct link (888-411-7442) and it seemed like I could open it over the phone. The only reason they didn’t proceed over the phone is coz I’m a non-resident alien. I presume if you do it over the phone the credit card funding will work.

Being personally unable to do so, I did it in branch.

DP: Alliant ACH codes as “direct deposit.” I also sent in a real DD to be safe. Bonus posted quite soon afterward.

  20. james says:

so if someone had an account and closed it recently they would not be eligible or what is the terms on that?

  21. ROCIII says:

Received a targeted mailer today. $400 for one $500 DD with the platinum checking. Online signup and $1000 cc funding allowed.

  22. Brian says:

Has anyone experienced issues with chexplus sensitivity?

  23. NBG says:

Success DP for me and my Wife:
    Opened 4/4
4/25 $500 Paypal Transfer coded as Direct Deposit
5/10 $500 Santander Bank Payment coded as Direct Deposit
    6/28 $150 Balbldr bonus posted

I used the promo code from the Post Office movers packet.
