Your Complete Guide To The American Express Platinum Changes For Both Personal & Business Cards

It’s now March 30th, meaning that the planned changes for the American Express Platinum Personal & Business cards has now gone into effect. I know that readers will have many questions about these changes, so this post will be your reference post. I’ll be splitting this post into two sections: one section will be relating to the personal cards and it’s different variations and the other will be relating to the business card.

Personal Platinum

Before we get started it’s important to remember that there is more than one Personal Platinum variation, these changes apply to all variations of this card.

Quick Overview of Changes

Annual Fee Increase

For existing cardholders the change will be implemented as follows:

  • Existing cardholders that have their annual fee due before August 31st, 2017 will get billed $450 for this year
  • Existing cardholders that have their annual fee due on or after September 1st, 2017 will be billed $550

For some reason the Mercedes-Benz card is still showing a $475 annual fee. I was previously told this would also be increased to $550 as well. Wait & see… Showing the correct annual fee now

Uber Credits

These credits are now live and you have only two days (March 30th and March 31st) to use this months $15 credit. We’ve created a dedicated page that answers F.A.Q. about these credits (one piece of good news is that it’s currently working for UberEats).

If you live in an area that Uber doesn’t service, you’re out of luck. I directly asked American Express about this and received a less than satisfactory response (our cardholders travel).

Metal Card

You can now request a metal card online (Account services > Card management > Replace Cards (Damaged, Lost, Stolen, or Name Change)). At the moment cards are showing as deliverable in one days time (March 31st).

5x Membership Rewards Points On AmexTravel.com Hotel Bookings

As mentioned previously, this benefit is entirely worthless. You can read my thoughts on why here.

Gold Cards For No Annual Fee

My understanding is that these cards also get a PreCheck/Global Entry credit as well as earning 2x points on dining (a category the Platinum doesn’t earn a bonus in).

Lounge Access Changes

This is actually in two parts:

Change In Sign Up Bonus

Here’s a detailed post on these changes.

Lounge Access Changes

This is actually in two parts:

5x Membership Rewards Points On AmexTravel.com Hotel & Airfare Bookings

As mentioned previously, the hotel benefit is entirely worthless. You can read my thoughts on why here. Airfare is useful though.

Final Thoughts

I will add to this page if readers have specific questions that they would like answered. My overall thoughts are that these changes are lackluster and for the majority of people they don’t change the value proposition of keeping the card long term. I say that with two major exceptions:

  • Families of 4 or more that travel together with only one Platinum card basically no longer have access to the Centurion lounges for their full family. I don’t have kids, but the idea of some of a family going into a lounge and others being stuck outside isn’t going to fly. For a lot of families (especially with a Centurion lounge at their home airport that travel frequently) this could be a reason to cancel the card.
  • Cardholders that will use the Uber $200 credit. If you value Uber credit at 90% of face value then you’re basically reducing the annual fee on the card by $80 per year. Obviously the more/less you value Uber credit the more/less it’ll adjust the annual fee.
  • Cardholders that live in an area Uber doesn’t service. Sorry, your annual fee just went up by $100 and you get no tangible benefits from it.

In my opinion American Express have completely missed the mark (and market) with these changes. I understand the inclination to increase the annual fee and bring in benefits with high ‘breakage’ (e.g Uber credits not being redeemed) but you’re left with a lot of confused cardholders/potential cardholders that can’t easily grasp why the card is actually great. I’ll write further thoughts/ramblings on this later.

“Families of 3 or more that travel together with only one Platinum card basically no longer have access to the Centurion lounges for their full family.”

Maybe I didn’t understand the benefit correctly, but shouldn’t it be family of 4 or more? Family of 3 would be considered as card holder + 2 guests and everyone should be able to get the entry.

I thought the business card was also getting 5x on flights booked w/Amex Travel?

Also, a chat rep confirmed to me that the MB Plat will stay at $475, although that may not be worth all that much. I wrote some more about it here: https://windbagmiles.com/2017/03/03/did-the-mercedes-benz-platinum-card-just-become-amexs-best-value-probably-not-but-you-know-maybe/

Your “American Express have completely missed the mark (and market)” says it all —
seems a perfect case study for anyone to learn from and should be included in all the Biz Schools as how NOT to self-destruct — reminds me of Proverbs 16:18 King James Version (KJV) 18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Personally, i loved AMEX and am sad to see nail in the coffin after watching it fade over the years — thanks to Chase for the CSR – my family (including my 19 year old) dont even miss the our AXP — closing out our last Platinum (our Biz Plat) when it comes up for renewal (before Sep)

PLEASE CONTINUE THE AWESOME CRUX (Final Thoughts & Our Verdict) — TAHNK YOU DOC!

Where can I find more info on the complimentary gold cards?

“Gold Cards For No Annual Fee–My understanding is that these cards also get a PreCheck/Global Entry credit…”

I’m guess you meant those AU gold cards are sharing the credit with the primary account holder, not their own credit, am I right?

sirtheta

No, they get their own credit. This has always been the case.

I was looking for confirmation that this was still true now that they lowered the fee to $0. I called Amex and just could not seem to make my question understood. I think this is one of those deeply buried features that just does not show up on any of the customer service scripts. I guess I will just try it out and see 🙂

I think this language is just funny on the site: “For up to 5 Additional Gold Cards, the annual fee is $0. Each Additional Gold Card after the first 5 Cards, is $0.”

For reference, I did look this up, but it is very generic.

“The benefit is also available to Additional Card Members on eligible Consumer and Business Card accounts. To receive the statement credit Additional Card Members must charge the application fee to the eligible Additional Card account.”

Contact Amex via chat in Personal Platinum account and received the following answer in regards to additional gold card receiving TSA pre check/global entry:

You can add an additional user at no additional cost, however, if that will be an additional gold card, card will not be eligible to receive TSA pre/global entry as that benefit is only available with an additional platinum card. Additional Gold Card users can only receive UBER VIP status, but not the credits. I was also pointed to this terms webpage with the exact wording regarding the TSA Pre:

https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/personal-card-application/terms/platinum-charge-card/25330-10-0/?print#CardBenefitsTerms

Fee Credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓®
The benefit is available to (i) Corporate Gold Card Members, (ii) Consumer Platinum Card® Members, Corporate Platinum Card® Members and Business Platinum Card® Members, and (iii) Centurion® Card Members. The benefit is also available to Additional Platinum and Centurion Card Members on eligible Consumer and Business Card accounts. To receive the statement credit, Additional Platinum and Centurion Card Members must charge the application fee to the eligible Additional Card account.

Really not sure if those gold cards get their own Global Entry credits. If I added 99 gold cards, amex will pay $9900 on GE credit, that doesn’t make any sense.

From my chat with Amex this afternoon:

Gold Members will get the following benefits:

1) 5x Membership Rewards on Air
2) 5x MR on Air and Prepaid Hotels (Amextravel.com)
3) There [sic[ charges towards the airline selected by you for up to $200.00 airline fee credit will be eligible
4) Boingo American Express Preferred Plan
5) Global Entry / TSA Precheck (fee credit)
6) The Hotel Collection

This benefit is a lot richer than I thought!

My replacement cards were sent US mail :/

So much for next day!

Is the Business card available in metal?

sirtheta

Note that on mobile you want to replace a damaged card — the “request a new metal card or replace a damaged card option” does not show.

Also this is the option to use because your card number will stay the same. (Unless you want your card number to change ofc.) Your CVV/CSC and other stuff may change though.

Doc- just to clarify the comment above because I am confused as well. I have 2 Amex plat cards, diff versions. For each one I can request a gold card for free with no af and those gold cards will each have a free 100 ge/precheck credit?

Rubayeth
Rubayeth

Did they remove the Schwab bonus of $100 when you have a certain amount in deposit ? Don’t see that in my benefit pages on my Amex Plat anymore. Will call in and confirm.

Is the Uber credit only good for the US?

Can I add a gold card for myself? If so, I guess that would count as a new account (for 5/24 purpose)?

Will sign up for the Biz version later this year and cancel the Pers before the annual fee next year.

Fiby

I added myself as an AU, but then I got a message saying they received my application but can’t make a decision at this time.

The hell? Since when is adding an AU an “application”? Anybody else encounter this?

I think you should be fine. I added a second PRG card for the same authorized user and got that same message.

The card came within a couple of days

Fiby

You were right – I just got the card in the mail.
