Earlier this year Expedia devalued points by removing the double value you got on VIP properties. Expedia have now made another unannounced change and you can no longer used points on flights. Hopefully readers have already used their points up before the previous devaluation.

I have been using Expedia for as long as there has been an Expedia. I have been saving my points for years so that, one day, I could get a free vacation. Now I see that is not possible. What a scam they are running. I will NEVER use them again. There are just too many honest sites available,
This is ridiculous. I finally save enough points to pay for a full flight and I have a gold membership and now I can’t use them? I had it out their live chat operator. I pointed out to him that their website directions clearly still say that you can use the points for flights. I quote; “sign in and search for pay now stays, car rentals, activities, OR FLIGHTS, where your points will cover the full cost (including taxes and fees)”. Wonder if they can be sued for false advertising.
As far as I can see, all the information on the Expedia website still shows points being valid toward flights (*as long as you can cover the cost in full*). Am I missing something or was this “devaluation” a temporary glitch?
Well…. that was a waste of a Credit Card Bonus for me!!
I knew there was a reason that I have not used Expedia in the past 10 years.
This really stinks. I earned more than 70k points from the card bonus, booked at the double VIP hotel rate for a nice stay in NYC with my wife, and had to cancel it all due to COVID. Then, they ended the VIP hotels bonus and now I can’t even use the points for flights. I’m sure they are under financial pressures right now, but I sure hope they restore full value when business returns to normal.
Use it or lose it! Thanks for the heads-up Doc. I cashed out all my expedia points on VIP hotel redemptions before that devaluation earlier this year. With hotel points I try to use them within 1 year or sooner because of devaluation issues. I give airline points a little more breathing room depending on the airline and partner redemption options.
