[Expired] Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 3x Fuel Points on Visa Gift Cards (3/13-3/19)

Deal has expired, view more Giant deals by clicking here

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s (not yet showing)

Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular for March 13 – March 19:

  • Get 3x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 3/13/20 – 3/19/20 (starts Friday)
  • Must use store card to get and use the points
  • Be sure to double check that your local store is running this offer before buying
  • “We now accept credit cards for the purchase of Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards”

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon.

  • Max discount in some areas is $1.50. In other areas, there might not be any max.
  • You have 30 days to use the points. The day of purchase is Day #1. (Giant PA and Martins might expire at the end of the following month.)
  • Points can only be used at partner Shell stations. You can redeem the points in a different area from where you got the points, but only if that Shell station is a partner. Check out the gas locator for Stop & Shop and for Giant for exact listings of which Shell stations are included. (Giant PA and Martins might only be valid at their own gas stations.)
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.
  • Pro tip: Use a Shell gift card and you’ll usually get the cash price; it’s especially worthwhile to get the lower cash price when using fuel points.

Our Verdict

Nice to see this back again, I expect we’ll see it with increasing regularity as we approach the summer season. We’ll repost when this goes live. Use a card that earns bonus rewards at the grocery or use Discover or Citi Dividend for 5% back this quarter.

Hi, does anyone know if giant points can be redeemed towards gift card purchases? Or only towards “real” grocery?

I live in MD. Thanks.

From experimenting, only non-perishable food grocery (most items in the middle aisles). It does not work on anything else. It must be in that category and that category only. See your receipt for items that fall into Grocery category. It really puts the points to limited use as I buy mostly bakery and meat which don’t fall into that category. Chips, canned foods, cookies, and cereal are grocery but I don’t buy them much.

Also, I’m not sure if your order subtotal must be greater than the points redeemed. A CSR told me it does in order to trigger the redeemed points discount. I have not confirmed this yet.

Okay, thanks for the information!

I can now confirm what I said and what the CSR said was wrong. Grocery Savings points will work on almost everything. If your points are below your order total, it will only deduct the appropriate amount and save the rest. Sorry for the confusion.

I used to be able to rollover 500 VGC into 490 VGC into 480 VGC (not as of recent) but I’m going to try it again. YMMV on cashier/manager. Similar to rolling over Target GC to GC during Black Friday.

Cool, I can still do it. It’s gonna be a busy week now. However another location literally a mile away looks at your drivers license and CC, keys in your drivers license (I think?), makes you enter your phone number, and takes your first born child. I think that location has fraud problems….

What happens if gas drops below $1.50 per gallon?

Yeah, watching Russia and Saudia Arabia go at it, was thinking gas might be close to free by next week

You will have to pay .099 cents per gallon, so a 20 gallon fill up will cost 19 cents total. This is the bare minimum you have to pay, it will not be free for Giant Food of Lanover Fuel Rewards folks. You will just bank any points not used and will still expire on the original date. The rules are different for other fuel rewards programs.

Whoops let me correct something, I looked back at my transactions. The BARE MINIMUM you must pay is $0.099 and therefore 20 gallons would cost $1.98.

Is there a fee to buy the gift cards?

$5.95 for the variable ones. If you get a $500 one, you’re getting $30 worth of gas for $5.95, assuming you buy the maximum 20 gallons.

Also of note is that Giant in PA (at least) earns Choice Rewards so you can use towards Grocery Dollars or gas savings. Gas savings is definitely the better option but the grocery dollars are good when you don’t need a lot of gas (as is our case where I work from home and my wife drives 3 miles round trip to work every day 😄).

If people were stacking Fuel Rewards and GetUpside, be aware GetUpside has been removing (at least for me) many gas stations around me so this is not as profitable for me as before. But now that they have Flexible Rewards (100 puts = $1 off) it’s not so bad. Profit margins are just decreased by ~$10-$15.

Decreased by $10-$15 per 1500 pts.

GetUpside gave me $10-$15per 20 gal (gas cans) and creating my own referral tree (I’m a terrible person).

Even without GetUpside, I’m saving $20 per 20 gal at Shell with Fuel Rewards vs Costco.
