FYI, I was charged a $5 fee, even though I moved the $2k within about 10 days of opening the account. Most places will give you some leeway for that first month, since its pretty impossible to meet a min daily balance from day 1. I sent a secure message to try and get the fee waived.

Which account did you open? I opened Rhythm Tunes and you have to meet these lengthy requirements to avoid the $7/month fee (I have met them, no fee yet):
• Make 10 or more 3Rivers debit card purchases that clear during the monthly qualification cycle*
• Receive 3Rivers eStatements
• Sign into Online Access or 3Rivers Mobile Banking at least once per qualification cycle**
• And at least one of the following:
1. Have a direct deposit into your Rhythm Checking account
2.Have at least one automatic payment not using your debit card but simply using your Rhythm Checking account and routing number (monthly phone bill, weekly daycare or monthly insurance payment, etc.)
3. Pay at least one bill from your Rhythm Checking account through Online Bill Pay each month

The fine print on an obscure document that specifically mentions the fee:
“A $7 monthly maintenance fee applies to Rhythm Checking if monthly qualifications are not met.”

I opened the Rewards checking and was able to get them to waive the fee since it was the first month I opened the account, nearly impossible meet a “minimum daily balance” the firs month opening the account.

The additional questions asked over the phone were nothing new in this game. My favorite was when they asked about all of my bank inquiries. “I prefer to use a local bank where ever I am. I have never found a bank that didnt want to hold my money.”

A fellow out of state user advised he worked with same CSR but outcome was not as favorable.

Also, There is 1 branch in St. Mary’s OH, so anyone in Ohio could try this as well.

I opened the Rewards Checking account last Friday. It was a soft pull, and had $500 in credit card funding available with a Visa or Mastercard. A CSR did call me to question my all my recent accounts. She wanted to make sure no one was opening accounts in my name. Just told her I was trying many new banks in the area. I’ve opened about 20 in the last year.

Please use check out the referral page if you want to use my referral.

One note, the Livin Free Checking account is only available for ages 15-25. If you outside that age bracket, probably the next best account is the “Reward Checking” which requires a $2000 balance to avoid the monthly fee.
