BBVA NBA: Apply Now for 5x Promo, Feb. 12th – Feb. 14th

The BBVA NBA card offers 5% cashback on all purchases during All-Star weekend and the two weeks on the NBA finals.

Last Chance

If you want to get the card for the upcoming 5x promo, now is the time. It does take time for the card to come in the mail

Aside from getting in on the All-Star 5x promo which can be worth a good few hundred dollars if maximized (see below), there is also a recently increased signup bonus of $200 which may not last forever.

Exact Dates

I called into BBVA Compass and they confirmed for me that the 5x promo will run for three days: Friday February 12th, Saturday the 13th, and Sunday the 14th. We also got a Twitter confirmation.

We’ll have up another post closer to the beginning of the promo with more details on how the 5x will work in practice and recommendations for using the card during the promotional period.

trying to prep for the All-Star weekend and had a few Qs:

1a) Can you have multiple products with or w/o multiple bonuses (more than 1 of the BBVA card, say you got lots of fav NBA teams?) 😉 I didnt see any limitations in the T&Cs, unless I missed it somehow.
1b) has anyone churned this card, is it possible to cancel & reapply for this card again to get a new bonus if you cant have more than 1?

2) does pre-paying your acct even when you have a $0 balance increase your CL more? For ex: say my CL is $10k, I make a pre-payment of $10k, then can you spend more than your CL i.e. $20k in this case?
I’m aware of the daily spend limitations of BBVA. just asking hypothetically cause there are ways around the daily limits.

3) does a CLI require another HP? how often or how long after acct opening can you jump for one? not sure if it follows the same rules as AMEXs own cards, since this portfolio backend is managed by AMEX on behalf of BBVA.

Square account 2.9% processing fee, card is 5% cash back equals 2.1% profit.
Do not use your own card where name matches your square acct name.
If you refer people you get a credit per person.
Lets say I have a couple of $1000 in credits as do my friends and we are waiting for these couple of days in February.

First applied and received message to call customer service. When I called they said they have no record of app going throught so try again. Based on that I reapplied. I have a FICO of 755 with no late or bad marks and got the dreaded “wait 7-10 days”. Will give it a little while and call customer service again. I was using chrome when this happened.

Well, 10 days later received a letter saying I was denied because “Unable to verify identifying information” so I called the number they gave me so I could give them the information they needed and all they would tell me is I was denied because of what the letter said and I could apply again in 30 days. They wouldn’t tell me what info they were missing, but yet at the bottom of the letter they were able to tell me my credit score was 734. Curious, if they are missing identifying information how is it they can tell me my credit score? Does anybody know the recon number for BBVA so I can try to get this cleared up? By the way the pulled Experian and according to my records there is no pull listed.

Anyone have any experience how I can get a waiver if I’m not a citizen? This is the most frustrating requirement. I have a green card but not citizenship.

Easier to get a Citizenship than getting a Credit card.

I too am a Green-Card holder and not a citizen, and I got this card no problem in May, in time for the NBA Finals. I don’t remember there being an issue-maybe this has changed since May? I have never seen any credit card application ask this question (unlike bank accounts, where the citizen issue frequently comes up). Usually, the question it asks is about residency. I wonder if it’s possible to just say “yes” and not have it be an issue, even legally? Maybe when they say “citizen” they really mean “resident”?

Not legally.

The box that you need to check in order to submit the application for this card reads “I am a citizen of the United States.” and the very first question on the naturalization form (https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/n-400.pdf) is “Have you ever claimed to be a U.S. citizen (in writing or any other way)?” (page 13).

I couldn’t care less whether or not BBVA actually checks, but there is no way in hell I’m even remotely jeopardizing my naturalization process because of a credit card that would net me a few hundred dollars.

My wife is a permanent resident and also got shut down on this card for not being a citizen, if you don’t check the citizen box you can’t proceed. Called in and the rep didn’t know what he was talking about but seemed to think that only that full citizens can apply. She was really set on getting her hometown team, even funnier that its the same place the all star game is being played this year.

could i theoretically just post send a few hundred on venmo a few times during all star weekend and the finals to get an easy and free 1.5% return? I really don’t feel like spending my time driving around and getting a bunch of gift cards and finding ways to liquidate them…

Looking forward to the next post! I’ve got mine a few weeks ago and have been warming it up a little at grocery stores lol. Lots of conflicting info out there about how hard to push during the 5% days. Hopefully Chuck has it all figured out.
